2021 Resource Allocation in C-RAN with Hybrid RF/FSO and Full-duplex Self-Backhauling Radio Units
abstract
This paper considers the downlink of a cloud radio access network (C-RAN) consisting of a central processor (CP) and a network of connected radio units (RUs). We propose a novel resource allocation solution for the scenario with full-duplex (FD) self-backhauling RUs connected through hybrid radio-frequency (RF)/free-space optical (FSO) links to the CP for improved network throughput. This enables us to study the feasibility of the FD mode in terms of required self-interference cancellation to outperform the benchmark half-duplex hybrid RF/FSO transmission. Since the derived optimization problem for the design of the linear precoders and quantizers subject to the fronthaul capacity, zero-forcing, and power constraints, is non-convex and intractable, we develop an algorithm to solve it via an alternating optimization approach. In the simulation results, the proposed hybrid RF/FSO policy is assessed in terms of achievable rate, and we highlight the parameter range for which FD transmission is more rewarding than the time-division approach, under different weather conditions and selected RF bandwidth.

2021 Efficient Spectrum Utilization via Pulse Shape Design for Fixed Transmission Networks
abstract
Microwave backhaul links are characterized by high signal-to-noise ratios permitting spectrally-efficient transmission. The used signal constellation sizes and achievable data rates are typically limited by transceiver impairments, predominantly by phase noise from non-ideal carrier generation. In this article, we propose a new method to improve the data rate over such microwave links. We make use of the fact that adjacent frequency channels are inactive in many deployment scenarios. We argue that additional data can be transmitted in the skirts of the spectral mask imposed on the transmission signal by regulation. To accomplish this task, we present a shaped wideband single-carrier transmission using non-Nyquist pulse shapes. In particular, we design spectrum-skirt filling (SSF) pulse shaping filters that follow the spectral mask response, and perform detection using an accordingly increased sampling frequency at the receiver. We evaluate the achievable information rates of the SSF-based transmission considering practical dispersive channels and non-ideal transmitter and receiver processing. To compensate for phase noise impairments, we derive carrier phase tracking and estimation techniques, and utilize them in tandem with nonlinear precoding which mitigates the intersymbol interference introduced by the non-Nyquist SSF shaping filter. Quantitative performance evaluations show that the proposed system design achieves higher data rates in a dispersive microwave propagation environment with respect to the conventional transmission with Nyquist pulse shaping.

2018 Coordinated Beamforming for Downlink Visible Light Communication Networks
abstract
Visible light communication (VLC) is an emerging short-range optical wireless communication technology that is driven by the widespread deployment of light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Indoor VLC users may experience noticeable interference when independent transmitters utilizing wide-beam luminaires are closely located. In this paper, a coordinated beamforming (CB) scheme is proposed for downlink interference mitigation among the coexisting VLC attocells utilizing multi-luminaire transmitters. Compared to joint transmission (JT) schemes, wherein the data and channel state information are shared among transmitters of different attocells, the proposed CB scheme places lower requirements on the network in terms of backbone traffic, and is easier to implement in a practical deployment, though at the cost of compromised performance. In this paper, we investigate the downlink transmission of coordinated VLC attocells and focus on its transmitter design. The weighted sum mean square error (WSMSE) is adopted as the performance metric to take into consideration interference, noise, and fairness among users in system optimization. The WSMSE minimization problem is considered with linear beamforming restricted by amplitude constraints. Such constraints arise from the dynamic range limitations in typical LEDs. Moreover, we extend our design method to take into account possible mismatches in channel information available to the transmitters. Numerical examples are provided to illustrate the performance of the proposed CB scheme in typical VLC scenarios. We also quantify the performance gap among several coordination schemes including JT and CB.

2015 Physical-Layer Security for MISO Visible Light Communication Channels
abstract
This paper considers improving the confidentiality of visible light communication (VLC) links within the framework of physical-layer security. We study a VLC scenario with one transmitter, one legitimate receiver, and one eavesdropper. The transmitter has multiple light sources, while the legitimate and unauthorized receivers have a single photodetector, each. We characterize secrecy rates achievable via transmit beamforming over the multiple-input, single-output (MISO) VLC wiretap channel. For VLC systems, intensity modulation (IM) via light-emitting diodes (LEDs) is the most practical transmission scheme. Because of the limited dynamic range of typical LEDs, the modulating signal must satisfy certain amplitude constraints. Hence, we begin with deriving lower and upper bounds on the secrecy capacity of the scalar Gaussian wiretap channel subject to amplitude constraints. Then, we utilize beamforming to obtain a closed-form secrecy rate expression for the MISO wiretap channel. Finally, we propose a robust beamforming scheme to consider the scenario wherein information about the eavesdropper's channel is imperfect due to location uncertainty. A typical application of the proposed scheme is to secure the communication link when the eavesdropper is expected to exist within a specified area. The performance is measured in terms of the worst-case secrecy rate guaranteed under all admissible realizations of the eavesdropper's channel.

2014 Physical-layer security for indoor visible light communications
abstract
This paper considers secure transmission over the visible light communication (VLC) channel by the means of physical-layer security techniques. In particular, we consider achievable secrecy rates of the multiple-input, single-output (MISO) wiretap VLC channel. The VLC channel is modeled as a deterministic and real-valued Gaussian channel subject to amplitude constraints. We utilize null-steering and artificial noise strategies to achieve positive secrecy rates when the eavesdropper's channel state information (CSI) is perfectly known and entirely unknown to the transmitter, respectively. In both scenarios, the legitimate receiver's CSI is available to the transmitter. We numerically evaluate achievable secrecy rates under typical VLC scenarios and show that simple precoding techniques can significantly improve the confidentiality of VLC links.

2006 AMR Call Quality Measurement Based on ITU-T P.862.1 PESQ-LQO
abstract
Adaptive multi-rate (AMR) codecs are used popularly in most GSM and W-CDMA networks. This document describes the AMR call quality measurement results of PESQ-LQO (ITU-T P.862-1) based mean opinion score (MOS) vs. several key RF parameters under a controlled lab test environment. Frequency hopping and Rayleigh fading were included. The codecs that were evaluated include full rate 12.2, 7.4, 5.9, 4.75 and half rate 7.4, 5.9, 4.75. The RF parameters studied here were C/I, RXQUAL and FER MOS scores were collected via the tool based on the ITU P.862.1 PESQ-LQO algorithm. The radio link timer (RLT) was set 64 and the transmit power control (TPC) and discontinuous transmission (DTX) mechanisms were turned off for all fixed codec cases.
