abstract
This article is a perspective on some important developments in semantics and in computational linguistics over the past forty years. It reviews two lines of research that lie at opposite ends of the field: semantics and morphology. The semantic part deals with issues from the 1970s such as discourse referents, implicative verbs, presuppositions, and questions. The second part presents a brief history of the application of finite-state transducers to linguistic analysis starting with the advent of two-level morphology in the early 1980s and culminating in successful commercial applications in the 1990s. It offers some commentary on the relationship, or the lack thereof, between computational and paper-and-pencil linguistics. The final section returns to the semantic issues and their application to currently popular tasks such as textual inference and question answering.

2003 Finite state methods in natural language processing
abstract
Finite state methods have been in common use in various areas of natural language processing (NLP) for many years. A series of specialized workshops in this area illustrates this. In 1996, András Kornai organized a very successful workshop entitled Extended Finite State Models of Language. One of the results of that workshop was a special issue of Natural Language Engineering (Volume 2, Number 4). In 1998, Kemal Oflazer organized a workshop called Finite State Methods in Natural Language Processing. A selection of submissions for this workshop were later included in a special issue of Computational Linguistics (Volume 26, Number 1). Inspired by these events, Lauri Karttunen, Kimmo Koskenniemi and Gertjan van Noord took the initiative for a workshop on finite state methods in NLP in Helsinki, as part of the European Summer School in Language, Logic and Information. As a related special event, the 20th anniversary of two-level morphology was celebrated. The appreciation of these events led us to believe that once again it should be possible, with some additional submissions, to compose an interesting special issue of this journal.

2000 Finite-State Non-Concatenative Morphotactics
abstract
We describe a new technique for constructing finite-state transducers that involves reapplying the regular-expression compiler to its own output. Implemented in an algorithm called compile-replace, this technique has proved useful for handling non-concatenative phenomena; and we demonstrate it on Malay full-stem reduplication and Arabic stem interdigitation.

1996 Directed Replacement
abstract
This paper introduces to the finite-state calculus a family of directed replace operators. In contrast to the simple replace expression, UPPER ← LOWER, defined in Karttunen (1995), the new directed version, UPPER @← LOWER, yields an unambiguous transducer if the lower language consists of a single string. It transduces the input string from left to right, making only the longest possible replacement at each point.A new type of replacement expression, UPPER @← PREFIX ... SUFFIX, yields a transducer that inserts text around strings that are instances of UPPER. The symbol ... denotes the matching part of the input which itself remains unchanged. PREFIX and SUFFIX are regular expressions describing the insertions.Expressions of the type UPPER @← PREFIX ... SUFFIX may be used to compose a deterministic parser for a "local grammar" in the sense of Gross (1989). Other useful applications of directed replacement include tokenization and filtering of text streams.

1995 The Replace Operator
abstract
This paper introduces to the calculus of regular expressions a replace operator and defines a set of replacement expressions that concisely encode alternate variations of the operation. Replace expressions denote regular relations, defined in terms of other regular expression operators. The basic case is unconditional obligatory replacement. We develop several versions of conditional replacement that allow the operation to be constrained by context.

1984 Features and Values
abstract
The paper discusses the linguistic aspects of a new general purpose facility for computing with features. The program was developed in connection with the course I taught at the University of Texas in the fall of 1983. It is a generalized and expanded version of a system that Stuart Shieber originally designed for the PATR-II project at SRI in the spring of 1983 with later modifications by Fernando Pereira and me. Like its predecessors, the new Texas version of the "DG (directed graph)" package is primarily intended for representing morphological and syntactic information but it may turn out to be very useful for semantic representations too.
