2019 Alleviating Scalability Limitation of Accelerator-Based Platforms
abstract
Accelerator-based chip multiprocessors (ACMPs), which combine application-specific HW accelerators (ACCs) with host processor core(s), are promising architectures for high-performance and power-efficient computing. However, ACMPs with many ACCs have scalability limitations. The ACCs' performance benefits can be overshadowed by bottlenecks on shared resources of processor core(s), communication fabric/DMA, and on-chip memory. Primarily, this is rooted in the ACCs' data access and the orchestration dependency. Due to very loosely defined ACC communication semantics, and relying on general architectures, the resources bottlenecks hamper performance. This paper explores and alleviates the scalability limitations of ACMPs. To this end, this paper first proposes ACMPerf, an analytical model to capture the impact of the resources bottlenecks on the achievable ACCs' benefits. Then, this paper identifies and formalizes ACC communication semantics which paves the path toward a more scalable integration of ACCs. The semantics describe four primary aspects: 1) data access; 2) data granularity; 3) data marshalling; and 4) synchronization. Finally, this paper proposes a novel architecture of transparent self-synchronizing accelerators (TSS). TSS efficiently realizes our identified communication semantics of direct ACC-to-ACC connections often occurring in streaming applications. TSS delivers more of the ACCs' benefits than conventional ACMP architectures. Given the same set of ACCs, TSS has up to 130× higher throughput and 78× lower energy consumption, mainly due to reducing the load on shared architectural resources by 78.3×.

2015 Revisiting accelerator-rich CMPs: challenges and solutions
abstract
Heterogeneous Chip Multiprocessors (CMP)s, which combine processor cores with specialized HW accelerators, are one main approach to high-performance low-power computing. While it is promising for few accelerators, the scalability is a major challenge with increasing number of accelerators. Resources including memory, communication fabric and processor turn into bottlenecks and result in accelerator under-utilization and cripple the performance.

2014 Simultaneous hardware and time redundancy with online task scheduling for low energy highly reliable standby-sparing system
abstract
Standby-sparing is one of the common techniques in order to design fault-tolerant safety-critical systems where the high level of reliability is needed. Recently, the minimization of energy consumption in embedded systems has attracted a lot of concerns. Simultaneous considering of high reliability and low energy consumption by DVS is a challenging problem in designing such a system, since using DVS has been shown to reduce the reliability profoundly. In this article, we have studied different schemes of standby-sparing systems from the energy consumption and reliability point of view. Moreover, we propose a new standby-sparing scheme which addresses both reliability and energy consumption jointly together. This scheme uses a simple energy management coupled with an online task scheduler which tries to dispatch those ready tasks which are expected to lead to high reliability and low energy consumption in the system. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme has been shown on TGFF under stochastic workloads. The results show 52% improvement on energy saving compared to the conventional hot standby-sparing system. Moreover, two orders of magnitude higher reliability is obtained on average, while preserving the same level of energy saving as compared to the state-of-the-art low-energy standby-sparing system (LESS).

2013 Power and Performance Efficient Partial Circuits in Packet-Switched Networks-on-Chip
abstract
In this paper, we propose a hybrid packet-circuit switching for networks-on-chip to benefit from the advantages of both switching mechanisms. Integrating circuit and packet switching into a single NoC is achieved by partitioning the link bandwidth and router data-path and control-path elements into two parts and allocating each part to one of the switching methods. In this NoC, during injection in the source node, packets are initially forwarded on the packet-switched sub-network, but keep requesting a circuit towards the destination node. The circuit-switched part, at each cycle, collects the circuit construction requests, performs arbitration among the conflicting requests, and constructs circuits over the unallocated circuit-switched sub-network links. Unlike traditional circuit-switching, the circuit end point in this NoC is not necessarily the packet destination, rather the circuits can be terminated in any intermediate node between the packet source and destination nodes. At that node, the packet may either travel over another circuit (in case of successful circuit request) or continue its path over the packet-switched part. Therefore, packets may switch between the two sub-networks several times during their life-time in the network. Circuit construction is handled by a low-latency and low-cost setup network. To keep the complexity of the circuit construction low, the circuits are restricted to span within a neighborhood of d hops of the requesting node. The experimental results show considerable improvement in energy and latency over a traditional packet-switched NoC.
