2025 KVQ: Boosting Video Quality Assessment via Saliency-guided Local Perception
abstract
Video Quality Assessment (VQA), which intends to predict the perceptual quality of videos, has attracted increasing attention. Due to factors like motion blur or specific distortions, the quality of different regions in a video varies. Recognizing the region-wise local quality within a video is beneficial for assessing global quality and can guide us in adopting fine-grained enhancement or transcoding strategies. Due to the heavy cost of annotating region-wise quality, the lack of ground truth constraints from relevant datasets further complicates the utilization of local perception. Inspired by the Human Visual System (HVS) that links global quality to the local texture of different regions and their visual saliency, we propose a Kaleidoscope Video Quality Assessment (KVQ) framework, which aims to effectively assess both saliency and local texture, thereby facilitating the assessment of global quality. Our framework extracts visual saliency and allocates attention using Fusion-Window Attention (FWA) while incorporating a Local Perception Constraint (LPC) to mitigate the reliance of regional texture perception on neighboring areas. KVQ obtains significant improvements across multiple scenarios on five VQA benchmarks compared to SOTA methods. Furthermore, to assess local perception, we establish a new Local Perception Visual Quality (LPVQ) dataset with region-wise annotations. Experimental results demonstrate the capability of KVQ in perceiving local distortions. KVQ models and the LPVQ dataset will be available at https://github.com/qyp2000/KVQ.

2025 Visual Autoregressive Modeling for Image Super-Resolution
abstract
Image Super-Resolution (ISR) has seen significant progress with the introduction of remarkable generative models. However, challenges such as the trade-off issues between fidelity and realism, as well as computational complexity, have also posed limitations on their application. Building upon the tremendous success of autoregressive models in the language domain, we propose VARSR, a novel visual autoregressive modeling for ISR framework with the form of next-scale prediction. To effectively integrate and preserve semantic information in low-resolution images, we propose using prefix tokens to incorporate the condition. Scale-aligned Rotary Positional Encodings are introduced to capture spatial structures and the diffusion refiner is utilized for modeling quantization residual loss to achieve pixel-level fidelity. Image-based Classifier-free Guidance is proposed to guide the generation of more realistic images. Furthermore, we collect large-scale data and design a training process to obtain robust generative priors. Quantitative and qualitative results show that VARSR is capable of generating high-fidelity and high-realism images with more efficiency than diffusion-based methods. Our codes are released at https://github.com/quyp2000/VARSR.

2024 KVQ: Kwai Video Quality Assessment for Short-form Videos
abstract
Short-form UGC video platforms, like Kwai and TikTok, have been an emerging and irreplaceable mainstream media form, thriving on user-friendly engagement, and kaleidoscope creation, etc. However, the advancing content-generation modes, e.g., special effects, and sophisticated processing workflows, e.g., de-artifacts, have introduced significant challenges to recent UGC video quality assessment: (i) the ambiguous contents hinder the identification of quality-determined regions. (ii) the diverse and complicated hybrid distortions are hard to distinguish. To tackle the above challenges and assist in the development of short-form videos, we establish the first large-scale Kwai short Video database for Quality assessment, termed KVQ, which comprises 600 user-uploaded short videos and 3600 processed videos through the diverse practical processing workflows, including preprocessing, transcoding, and enhancement. Among them, the absolute quality score of each video and partial ranking score among indistinguish samples are provided by a team of professional researchers specializing in image processing. Based on this database, we propose the first short-form video quality evaluator, i.e., KSVQE, which enables the quality evaluator to identify the quality-determined semantics with the content understanding of large vision language models (i.e., CLIP) and distinguish the distortions with the distortion understanding module. Experimental results have shown the effectiveness of KSVQE on our KVQ database and popular VQA databases. The project can be found at https://lixinustc.github.io/projects/KVQ/.

2024 PTM-VQA: Efficient Video Quality Assessment Leveraging Diverse PreTrained Models from the Wild
abstract
Video quality assessment (VQA) is a challenging problem due to the numerous factors that can affect the perceptual quality of a video, e.g., content attractiveness, distortion type, motion pattern, and level. However, annotating the Mean opinion score (MOS) for videos is expensive and time-consuming, which limits the scale of VQA datasets, and poses a significant obstacle for deep learning-based methods. In this paper, we propose a VQA method named PTM-VQA, which leverages PreTrained Models to transfer knowledge from models pretrained on various pre-tasks, enabling benefits for VQA from different aspects. Specifically, we extract features of videos from different pretrained models with frozen weights and integrate them to generate representation. Since these models possess var-ious fields of knowledge and are often trained with labels irrelevant to quality, we propose an Intra-Consistency and Inter-Divisibility (ICID) loss to impose constraints on features extracted by multiple pretrained models. The intra-consistency constraint ensures that features extracted by different pretrained models are in the same unified quality-aware latent space, while the inter-divisibility introduces pseudo clusters based on the annotation of samples and tries to separate features of samples from different clusters. Furthermore, with a constantly growing number of pretrained models, it is crucial to determine which models to use and how to use them. To address this problem, we propose an efficient scheme to select suitable candidates. Models with better clustering performance on VQA datasets are chosen to be our candidates. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

2024 QPT-V2: Masked Image Modeling Advances Visual Scoring
abstract
Quality assessment and aesthetics assessment aim to evaluate the perceived quality and aesthetics of visual content. Current learning-based methods suffer greatly from the scarcity of labeled data and usually perform sub-optimally in terms of generalization. Although masked image modeling (MIM) has achieved noteworthy advancements across various high-level tasks (e.g., classification, detection etc.). In this work, we take on a novel perspective to investigate its capabilities in terms of quality- and aesthetics-awareness. To this end, we propose Quality- and aesthetics-aware pretraining (QPT V2), the first pretraining framework based on MIM that offers a unified solution to quality and aesthetics assessment. To perceive the high-level semantics and fine-grained details, pretraining data is curated. To comprehensively encompass quality- and aesthetics-related factors, degradation is introduced. To capture multi-scale quality and aesthetic information, model structure is modified. Extensive experimental results on 11 downstream benchmarks clearly show the superior performance of QPT V2 in comparison with current state-of-the-art approaches and other pretraining paradigms. Code and models will be released at https://github.com/KeiChiTse/QPT-V2.

2023 Quality-aware Pretrained Models for Blind Image Quality Assessment
abstract
Blind image quality assessment (BIQA) aims to auto-matically evaluate the perceived quality of a single image, whose performance has been improved by deep learning-based methods in recent years. However, the paucity of labeled data somewhat restrains deep learning-based BIQA methods from unleashing their full potential. In this paper, we propose to solve the problem by a pretext task customized for BIQA in a self-supervised learning manner, which enables learning representations from orders of mag-nitude more data. To constrain the learning process, we propose a quality-aware contrastive loss based on a simple assumption: the quality of patches from a distorted image should be similar, but vary from patches from the same image with different degradations and patches from different images. Further, we improve the existing degradation process and form a degradation space with the size of roughly 2 × 107. After pretrained on ImageNet using our method, models are more sensitive to image quality and perform significantly better on downstream BIQA tasks. Experimental results show that our method obtains remarkable improvements on popular BIQA datasets.

2023 Ada-DQA: Adaptive Diverse Quality-aware Feature Acquisition for Video Quality Assessment
abstract
Video quality assessment (VQA) has attracted growing attention in recent years. While the great expense of annotating large-scale VQA datasets has become the main obstacle for current deep-learning methods. To surmount the constraint of insufficient training data, in this paper, we first consider the complete range of video distribution diversity (i.e. content, distortion, motion) and employ diverse pretrained models (e.g. architecture, pretext task, pre-training dataset) to benefit quality representation. An Adaptive Diverse Quality-aware feature Acquisition (Ada-DQA) framework is proposed to capture desired quality-related features generated by these frozen pretrained models. By leveraging the Quality-aware Acquisition Module (QAM), the framework is able to extract more essential and relevant features to represent quality. Finally, the learned quality representation is utilized as supplementary supervisory information, along with the supervision of the labeled quality score, to guide the training of a relatively lightweight VQA model in a knowledge distillation manner, which largely reduces the computational cost during inference. Experimental results on three mainstream no-reference VQA benchmarks clearly show the superior performance of Ada-DQA in comparison with current state-of-the-art approaches without using extra training data of VQA.

2023 Capturing Co-existing Distortions in User-Generated Content for No-reference Video Quality Assessment
abstract
Video Quality Assessment (VQA), which aims to predict the perceptual quality of a video, has attracted raising attention with the rapid development of streaming media technology, such as Facebook, TikTok, Kwai, and so on. Compared with other sequence-based visual tasks (e.g., action recognition), VQA faces two under-estimated challenges unresolved in User Generated Content (UGC) videos. First, it is not rare that several frames containing serious distortions (e.g., blocking, blurriness), can determine the perceptual quality of the whole video, while other sequence-based tasks require more frames of equal importance for representations.Second, the perceptual quality of a video exhibits a multi-distortion distribution, due to the differences in the duration and probability of occurrence for various distortions. In order to solve the above challenges, we propose Visual Quality Transformer (VQT) to extract quality-related sparse features more efficiently. Methodologically, a Sparse Temporal Attention (STA) is proposed to sample keyframes by analyzing the temporal correlation between frames, which reduces the computational complexity from O(T2) to O(T log T). Structurally, a Multi-Pathway Temporal Network (MPTN) utilizes multiple STA modules with different degrees of sparsity in parallel, capturing co-existing distortions in a video. Experimentally, VQT demonstrates superior performance than many state-of-the-art methods in three public no-reference VQA datasets. Furthermore, VQT shows better performance in four full-reference VQA datasets against widely-adopted industrial algorithms (e.g., VMAF and AVQT).

2022 Self-supervised Correlation Mining Network for Person Image Generation
abstract
Person image generation aims to perform non-rigid deformation on source images, which generally requires unaligned data pairs for training. Recently, self-supervised methods express great prospects in this task by merging the disentangled representations for self-reconstruction. However, such methods fail to exploit the spatial correlation between the disentangled features. In this paper, we propose a Self-supervised Correlation Mining Network (SCM-Net) to rearrange the source images in the feature space, in which two collaborative modules are integrated, Decomposed Style Encoder (DSE) and Correlation Mining Module (CMM). Specifically, the DSE first creates unaligned pairs at the feature level. Then, the CMM establishes the spatial correlation field for feature rearrangement. Eventually, a translation module transforms the rearranged features to realistic results. Meanwhile, for improving the fidelity of cross-scale pose transformation, we propose a graph based Body Structure Retaining Loss (BSR Loss) to preserve reasonable body structures on half body to full body generation. Extensive experiments conducted on DeepFashion dataset demonstrate the superiority of our method compared with other supervised and unsupervised approaches. Furthermore, satisfactory results on face generation show the versatility of our method in other deformation tasks.

2018 SafeNet: Scale-normalization and Anchor-based Feature Extraction Network for Person Re-identification
abstract
Person Re-identification (ReID) is a challenging retrieval task that requires matching a person's image across non-overlapping camera views. The quality of fulfilling this task is largely determined on the robustness of the features that are used to describe the person. In this paper, we show the advantage of jointly utilizing multi-scale abstract information to learn powerful features over full body and parts. A scale normalization module is proposed to balance different scales through residual-based integration. To exploit the information hidden in non-rigid body parts, we propose an anchor-based method to capture the local contents by stacking convolutions of kernels with various aspect ratios, which focus on different spatial distributions. Finally, a well-defined framework is constructed for simultaneously learning the representations of both full body and parts. Extensive experiments conducted on current challenging large-scale person ReID datasets, including Market1501, CUHK03 and DukeMTMC, demonstrate that our proposed method achieves the state-of-the-art results.

2017 Deep Networks for Degraded Document Image Binarization through Pyramid Reconstruction
abstract
Binarization of document images is an important processing step for document images analysis and recognition. However, this problem is quite challenging in some cases because of the quality degradation of document images, such as varying illumination, complicated backgrounds, image noises due to ink spots, water stains or document creases. In this paper, we propose a framework based on deep convolutional neural-network (DCNN) for adaptive binarization of degraded document images. The basic idea of our method is to decompose a degraded document image into a spatial pyramid structure by using DCNN, with each layer at different scale. Then the foreground image is sequentially reconstructed from these layers in a coarse-to-fine manner by using deconvolutional network. Such kind of decomposition is quite beneficial, since multi-resolution supervision information can be directly introduced into network learning. We also define several loss functions about label consistency and foregrounds smoothing to further regularize the training of the network. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

2017 Efficient cloud detection in remote sensing images using edge-aware segmentation network and easy-to-hard training strategy
abstract
Detecting cloud regions in remote sensing image (RSI) is very challenging yet of great importance to meteorological forecasting and other RSI-related applications. Technically, this task is typically implemented as a pixel-level segmentation. However, traditional methods based on handcrafted or low-level cloud features often fail to achieve satisfactory performances from images with bright non-cloud and/or semitransparent cloud regions. What is more, the performances could be further degraded due to the ambiguous boundaries caused by complicated textures and non-uniform distribution of intensities. In this paper, we propose a multi-task based deep neural network for cloud detection in RSIs. Architecturally, our network is designed to combine the two tasks of cloud segmentation and cloud edge detection together to encourage a better detection near cloud boundaries, resulting in an end-to-end approach for accurate cloud detection. Accordingly, an efficient sample selection strategy is proposed to train our network in an easy-to-hard manner, in which the number of the selected samples is governed by a weight that is annealed until the entire training samples have been considered. Both visual and quantitative comparisons are conducted on RSIs collected from Google Earth. The experimental results indicate that our method can yield superior performance over the state-of-the-art methods.
