| 2026 | Robust Noise Modeling for Spike Camera via Time-Interval Quantification and Spike-DSLR Multimodal Dataset in Low-Light ImagingabstractThe inherent differences between spike cameras and traditional frame-based cameras lead to more complex and diverse noise characteristics, particularly under extremely low-light conditions. Existing noise modeling approaches for spike camera predominantly rely on inter-spike intervals (ISI) for noise quantification, which often results in inaccurate noise characterization. Moreover, current datasets for spike camera image reconstruction tasks are either synthetic or lack corresponding high-quality reference images, severely limiting rigorous evaluation of noise modeling methods. To address this limitation, we propose a multimodal noise modeling framework for spike camera that integrates insights from traditional frame-based imaging into spike imaging. Specifically, we introduce a time-interval-based quantification method inspired by the exposure-time concept used in traditional frame-based cameras, enabling accurate noise characterization for spike camera. Furthermore, we present the Spike-DSLR Multimodal Dataset (SDMD), the first real-world dataset capturing aligned multimodal data pairs from spike cameras and Digital Single-Lens Reflex (DSLR) cameras, explicitly designed for evaluating spike camera noise models. Experimental results on SDMD demonstrate that our noise modeling approach significantly enhances spike camera image reconstruction quality under low-light conditions, achieving more than 1.6 dB improvement in PSNR compared to existing state-of-the-art methods. This validates both the necessity and effectiveness of adopting a multimodal perspective in spike camera noise modeling. Yue Cao 0009, Sizhao Li, Liguo Zhang 0002 |

| 2023 | Physics-Guided ISO-Dependent Sensor Noise Modeling for Extreme Low-Light PhotographyabstractAlthough deep neural networks have achieved astonishing performance in many vision tasks, existing learningbased methods are far inferior to the physical model-based solutions in extreme low-light sensor noise modeling. To tap the potential of learning-based sensor noise modeling, we investigate the noise formation in a typical imaging process and propose a novel physics-guided ISO-dependent sensor noise modeling approach. Specifically, we build a normalizing flow-based framework to represent the complex noise characteristics of CMOS camera sensors. Each component of the noise model is dedicated to a particular kind of noise under the guidance of physical models. Moreover, we take into consideration of the ISO dependence in the noise model, which is not completely considered by the existing learning-based methods. For training the proposed noise model, a new dataset is further collected with paired noisy-clean images, as well as flat-field and bias frames covering a wide range of ISO settings. Compared to existing methods, the proposed noise model is equipped with a flexible structure and accurate modeling capabilities, which is beneficial for better denoising performance in extreme low-light scenes. | 2022 | Incorporating Semi-Supervised and Positive-Unlabeled Learning for Boosting Full Reference Image Quality AssessmentabstractFull-reference (FR) image quality assessment (IQA) evaluates the visual quality of a distorted image by measuring its perceptual difference with pristine-quality reference, and has been widely used in low-level vision tasks. Pairwise labeled data with mean opinion score (MOS) are required in training FR-IQA model, but is time-consuming and cumbersome to collect. In contrast, unlabeled data can be easily collected from an image degradation or restoration process, making it encouraging to exploit unlabeled training data to boost FR-IQA performance. Moreover, due to the distribution inconsistency between labeled and unlabeled data, outliers may occur in unlabeled data, further increasing the training difficulty. In this paper, we suggest to incorporate semi-supervised and positive-unlabeled (PU) learning for exploiting unlabeled data while mitigating the adverse effect of outliers. Particularly, by treating all labeled data as positive samples, PU learning is leveraged to identify negative samples (i.e., outliers) from unlabeled data. Semi-supervised learning (SSL) is further deployed to exploit positive unlabeled data by dynamically generating pseudo-MOS. We adopt a dual-branch network including reference and distortion branches. Furthermore, spatial attention is introduced in the reference branch to concentrate more on the informative regions, and sliced Wasserstein distance is used for robust difference map computation to address the misalignment issues caused by images recovered by GAN models. Extensive experiments show that our method performs favorably against state-of-the-arts on the benchmark datasets PIPAL, KADID-10k, TID2013, LIVE and CSIQ. | 2020 | DenseUNet: densely connected UNet for electron microscopy image segmentationabstractElectron microscopy (EM) image segmentation plays an important role in computer‐aided diagnosis of specific pathogens or disease. However, EM image segmentation is a laborious task and needs to impose experts knowledge, which can take up valuable time from research. Convolutional neural network (CNN)‐based methods have been proposed for EM image segmentation and achieved considerable progress. Among those CNN‐based methods, UNet is regarded as the state‐of‐the‐art method. However, the UNet usually has millions of parameters to increase training difficulty and is limited by the issue of vanishing gradients. To address those problems, the authors present a novel highly parameter efficient method called DenseUNet, which is inspired by the approach that takes particular advantage of recent advances in both UNet and DenseNet. In addition, they successfully apply the weighted loss, which enables us to boost the performance of segmentation. They conduct several comparative experiments on the ISBI 2012 EM dataset. The experimental results show that their method can achieve state‐of‐the‐art results on EM image segmentation without any further post‐processing module or pre‐training. Moreover, due to smart design of the model, their approach has much less parameters than currently published encoder–decoder architecture variants for this dataset.
