2026 CodeEvo: Interaction-Driven Synthesis of Code-centric Data through Hybrid and Iterative Feedback
abstract
Acquiring high-quality instruction-code pairs is essential for training Large Language Models for code generation. While automated synthesis has emerged as an alternative to expensive manual curation, current approaches often rely on rigid heuristics, yielding data that is ungrounded or lacks logical complexity. We propose CodeEvo, a dual-agent architecture comprising a Coder for iterative solution synthesis and a Reviewer to orchestrate the generation trajectory. To transcend the limitations of existing heuristics, the Reviewer formulates a Schema to systematically architect logic and complexity through an interleaved synthesis of instructions and code. This process is further reinforced by a hybrid verification protocol synergizing deterministic compiler feedback with semantic evaluation.Under this framework, we construct CodeEvo-100K, a large-scale dataset of instruction-code pairs with stepped difficulty levels.Extensive experiments demonstrate that models fine-tuned on CodeEvo data significantly outperform established baselines across code generation benchmarks.In-depth analyses further provide insights into effective code-centric data synthesis.Code and data are available at https://github.com/QiushiSun/CodeEvo.

2025 A Controllable Examination for Long-Context Language Models
abstract
Existing frameworks for evaluating long-context language models (LCLM) can be broadly categorized into real-world applications (e.g, document summarization) and synthetic tasks (e.g, needle-in-a-haystack). Despite their utility, both approaches are accompanied by certain intrinsic limitations. Real-world tasks often involve complexity that makes interpretation challenging and suffer from data contamination, whereas synthetic tasks frequently lack meaningful coherence between the target information ("needle") and its surrounding context ("haystack"), undermining their validity as proxies for realistic applications. In response to these challenges, we posit that an ideal long-context evaluation framework should be characterized by three essential features: 1) seamless context: coherent contextual integration between target information and its surrounding context; 2) controllable setting: an extensible task setup that enables controlled studies—for example, incorporating additional required abilities such as numerical reasoning; and 3) sound evaluation: avoiding LLM-as-Judge and conduct exact-match to ensure deterministic and reproducible evaluation results. This study introduces $\textbf{LongBioBench}$, a benchmark that utilizes artificially generated biographies as a controlled environment for assessing LCLMs across dimensions of $\textit{understanding}$, $\textit{reasoning}$, and $\textit{trustworthiness}$. Our experimental evaluation, which includes $\textbf{18}$ LCLMs in total, demonstrates that most models still exhibit deficiencies in semantic understanding and elementary reasoning over retrieved results and are less trustworthy as context length increases. Our further analysis indicates some design choices employed by existing synthetic benchmarks, such as contextual non-coherence, numerical needles, and the absence of distractors, rendering them vulnerable to test the model's long-context capabilities. Moreover, we also reveal that long-context continual pretraining primarily adjusts RoPE embedding to accommodate extended context lengths, which in turn yields only marginal improvements in the model’s true capabilities. To sum up, compared to previous synthetic benchmarks, LongBioBench achieves a better trade-off between mirroring authentic language tasks and maintaining controllability, and is highly interpretable and configurable.

2024 MindMerger: Efficiently Boosting LLM Reasoning in non-English Languages
abstract
Reasoning capabilities are crucial for Large Language Models~(LLMs), yet a notable gap exists between English and non-English languages. To bridge this disparity, some works fine-tune LLMs to relearn reasoning capabilities in non-English languages, while others replace non-English inputs with an external model's outputs such as English translation text to circumvent the challenge of LLM understanding non-English. Unfortunately, these methods often underutilize the built-in skilled reasoning and useful language understanding capabilities of LLMs. In order to better utilize the minds of reasoning and language understanding in LLMs, we propose a new method, namely MergeMinds, which merges LLMs with the external language understanding capabilities from multilingual models to boost the multilingual reasoning performance. Furthermore, a two-step training scheme is introduced to first train to embeded the external capabilities into LLMs and then train the collaborative utilization of the external capabilities and the built-in capabilities in LLMs. Experiments on three multilingual reasoning datasets and a language understanding dataset demonstrate that MergeMinds consistently outperforms all baselines, especially in low-resource languages. Without updating the parameters of LLMs, the average accuracy improved by 6.7 and 8.0 across all languages and low-resource languages on the MGSM dataset, respectively.
