| 2024 | Dynamic Dense Graph Convolutional Network for Skeleton-Based Human Motion PredictionabstractGraph Convolutional Networks (GCN) which typically follows a neural message passing framework to model dependencies among skeletal joints has achieved high success in skeleton-based human motion prediction task. Nevertheless, how to construct a graph from a skeleton sequence and how to perform message passing on the graph are still open problems, which severely affect the performance of GCN. To solve both problems, this paper presents a Dynamic Dense Graph Convolutional Network (DD-GCN), which constructs a dense graph and implements an integrated dynamic message passing. More specifically, we construct a dense graph with 4D adjacency modeling as a comprehensive representation of motion sequence at different levels of abstraction. Based on the dense graph, we propose a dynamic message passing framework that learns dynamically from data to generate distinctive messages reflecting sample-specific relevance among nodes in the graph. Extensive experiments on benchmark Human 3.6M and CMU Mocap datasets verify the effectiveness of our DD-GCN which obviously outperforms state-of-the-art GCN-based methods, especially when using long-term and our proposed extremely long-term protocol. | 2024 | Temporal Decoupling Graph Convolutional Network for Skeleton-Based Gesture RecognitionabstractSkeleton-based gesture recognition methods have achieved high success using Graph Convolutional Network (GCN), which commonly uses an adjacency matrix to model the spatial topology of skeletons. However, previous methods use the same adjacency matrix for skeletons from different frames, which limits the flexibility of GCN to model temporal information. To solve this problem, we propose a Temporal Decoupling Graph Convolutional Network (TD-GCN), which applies different adjacency matrices for skeletons from different frames. The main steps of each convolution layer in our proposed TD-GCN are as follows. To extract deep spatiotemporal information from skeleton joints, we first extract high-level spatiotemporal features from skeleton data. Then, channel-dependent and temporal-dependent adjacency matrices corresponding to different channels and frames are calculated to capture the spatiotemporal dependencies between skeleton joints. Finally, to fuse topology information from neighbor skeleton joints, spatiotemporal features of skeleton joints are fused based on channel-dependent and temporal-dependent adjacency matrices. To the best of our knowledge, we are the first to use temporal-dependent adjacency matrices for temporal-sensitive topology learning from skeleton joints. The proposed TD-GCN effectively improves the modeling ability of GCN and achieves state-of-the-art results on gesture datasets including SHREC'17 Track and DHG-14/28. | 2020 | Self-Supervised Light Field Reconstruction Using Shearlet Transform and Cycle ConsistencyabstractShearlet Transform (ST) has been instrumental for the Densely-Sampled Light Field (DSLF) reconstruction, as it sparsifies the underlying Epipolar-Plane Images (EPIs). The sought sparsification is implemented through an iterative regularization, which tends to be slow because of the time spent on domain transformations for dozens of iterations. To overcome this limitation, this letter proposes a novel self-supervised DSLF reconstruction method, CycleST, which employs ST and cycle consistency. Specifically, CycleST is composed of an encoder-decoder network and a residual learning strategy that restore the shearlet coefficients of densely-sampled EPIs using EPI-reconstruction and cycle-consistency losses. CycleST is a self-supervised approach that can be trained solely on Sparsely-Sampled Light Fields (SSLFs) with small disparity ranges (≤8 pixels). Experimental results of DSLF reconstruction on SSLFs with large disparity ranges (16 - 32 pixels) demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed CycleST method. Furthermore, CycleST achieves ~ 9x speedup over ST, at least. Yuan Gao 0008, Robert Bregovic, Atanas P. Gotchev |

| 2019 | Fast: Flow-Assisted Shearlet Transform for Densely-Sampled Light Field ReconstructionabstractShearlet Transform (ST) is one of the most effective methods for Densely-Sampled Light Field (DSLF) reconstruction from a Sparsely-Sampled Light Field (SSLF). However, ST requires a precise disparity estimation of the SSLF. To this end, in this paper a state-of-the-art optical flow method, i.e. PWC-Net, is employed to estimate bidirectional disparity maps between neighboring views in the SSLF. Moreover, to take full advantage of optical flow and ST for DSLF reconstruction, a novel learning-based method, referred to as Flow-Assisted Shearlet Transform (FAST), is proposed in this paper. Specifically, FAST consists of two deep convolutional neural networks, i.e. disparity refinement network and view synthesis network, which fully leverage the disparity information to synthesize novel views via warping and blending and to improve the novel view synthesis performance of ST. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed FAST method over the other state-of-the-art DSLF reconstruction methods on nine challenging real-world SSLF sub-datasets with large disparity ranges (up to 26 pixels). | 2019 | MAST: Mask-Accelerated Shearlet Transform for Densely-Sampled Light Field ReconstructionabstractShearlet Transform (ST) is one of the most effective algorithms for the Densely-Sampled Light Field (DSLF) reconstruction from a Sparsely-Sampled Light Field (SSLF) with a large disparity range. However, ST requires a precise estimation of the disparity range of the SSLF in order to design a shearlet system with decent scales and to pre-shear the sparsely-sampled Epipolar-Plane Images (EPIs) of the SSLF. To overcome this limitation, a novel coarse-to-fine DSLF reconstruction method, referred to as Mask-Accelerated Shearlet Transform (MAST), is proposed in this paper. Specifically, a state-of-the-art learning-based optical flow method, FlowNet2, is employed to estimate the disparities of a SSLF. The estimated disparities are then utilized to roughly estimate the densely-sampled EPIs for the sparsely-sampled EPIs of the SSLF. Finally, an elaborately-designed soft mask for a coarsely-inpainted EPI is exploited to perform an iterative refinement on this EPI. Experimental results on nine challenging horizontal-parallax real-world SSLF datasets with large disparity ranges (up to 35 pixels) demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed method over the other state-of-the-art approaches. | 2017 | A Novel Self-Calibration Method for a Stereo-ToF System Using a Kinect V2 and Two 4K GoPro CamerasabstractA new light-field movie capture device using a Kinect V2 sensor and two 4K GoPro cameras is presented in this paper. Due to the uncontrollable tilt of the Kinect V2 camera, it is hard to obtain a constant rigid transformation between the stereo- and ToF-camera systems. To this end, a novel self-calibration method is proposed, which takes advantage of the geometric constraints from the scene and the cameras. Specifically, a camera orientation approximation approach is utilized to estimate the rigid transformation of the stereo-ToF system based on reliable point pairs filtered by the geometric constraints. Besides, a depth correction step is exploited to improve the depth accuracy of the Kinect V2 sensor. Moreover, a depth fusion strategy for the stereo- and ToF-depth data is proposed to provide more accurate depth images in 4K resolution. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed depth correction step, stereo-ToF calibration method and depth fusion strategy. | 2017 | A novel kinect V2 registration method for large-displacement environments using camera and scene constraintsabstractIn a lot of multi-Kinect V2-based systems, the registration of these Kinect V2 sensors is an important step which directly affects the system precision. The coarse-to-fine method using calibration objects is an effective way to solve the Kinect V2 registration problem. However, for the registration of Kinect V2 cameras with large displacements, this kind of method may fail. To this end, a novel Kinect V2 registration method, which is also based on the coarse-to-fine framework, is proposed by using camera and scene constraints. Specifically, in the coarse estimation stage, scene constraints are explored using off-the-shelf feature point detectors and camera constraints are explored using homography and fundamental matrices. In the estimation refinement stage, an Iterative Closest Point (ICP)-based point cloud registration method is utilized. Experimental results show that the proposed Kinect V2 registration method using camera and scene constraints performs much better in precision than using calibration objects in the large-displacement environment. | 2017 | Spontaneous versus posed smile recognition via region-specific texture descriptor and geometric facial dynamicsabstractAs a typical biometric cue with great diversities, smile is a fairly influential signal in social interaction, which reveals the emotional feeling and inner state of a person. Spontaneous and posed smiles initiated by different brain systems have differences in both morphology and dynamics. Distinguishing the two types of smiles remains challenging as discriminative subtle changes need to be captured, which are also uneasily observed by human eyes. Most previous related works about spontaneous versus posed smile recognition concentrate on extracting geometric features while appearance features are not fully used, leading to the loss of texture information. In this paper, we propose a region-specific texture descriptor to represent local pattern changes of different facial regions and compensate for limitations of geometric features. The temporal phase of each facial region is divided by calculating the intensity of the corresponding facial region rather than the intensity of only the mouth region. A mid-level fusion strategy of support vector machine is employed to combine the two feature types. Experimental results show that both our proposed appearance representation and its combination with geometry-based facial dynamics achieve favorable performances on four baseline databases: BBC, SPOS, MMI, and UvA-NEMO. | 2015 | Database Saliency for Fast Image RetrievalabstractThe bag-of-visual-words (BoW) model is effective for representing images and videos in many computer vision problems, and achieves promising performance in image retrieval. Nevertheless, the level of retrieval efficiency in a large-scale database is not acceptable for practical usage. Considering that the relevant images in the database of a given query are more likely to be distinctive than ambiguous, this paper defines “database saliency” as the distinctiveness score calculated for every image to measure its overall “saliency” in the database. By taking advantage of database saliency, we propose a saliency- inspired fast image retrieval scheme, S-sim, which significantly improves efficiency while retains state-of-the-art accuracy in image retrieval . There are two stages in S-sim: the bottom-up saliency mechanism computes the database saliency value of each image by hierarchically decomposing a posterior probability into local patches and visual words, the concurrent information of visual words is then bottom-up propagated to estimate the distinctiveness, and the top-down saliency mechanism discriminatively expands the query via a very low-dimensional linear SVM trained on the top-ranked images after initial search, ranking images are then sorted on their distances to the decision boundary as well as the database saliency values. We comprehensively evaluate S-sim on common retrieval benchmarks, e.g., Oxford and Paris datasets. Thorough experiments suggest that, because of the offline database saliency computation and online low-dimensional SVM, our approach significantly speeds up online retrieval and outperforms the state-of-the-art BoW-based image retrieval schemes. | 2014 | Smile detection in unconstrained scenarios using self-similarity of gradients featuresabstractSmile detection in unconstrained scenarios is a hot research topic with many real-world applications. This paper presents a new approach to practical smile detection and the primary contributions are three-fold. (1) In the image registration procedure, an eyes-mouth alignment strategy is found to be more efficient than popular eyes alignment. (2) In the feature extraction procedure, a novel feature descriptor, Self-Similarity of Gradients (GSS), is proposed and achieved good performance in comparison with baseline approaches. (3) Feature combination and multi-classifier combination strategies are adopted in experiments and excellent results are obtained. Experimental results show that the combined features (HOG+GSS) using AdaBoost+SVM achieve improved performance over state-of-the-art in the GENKI4K benchmark. Hong Liu 0008, Yuan Gao 0008 |

| 2014 | Gender identification in unconstrained scenarios using Self-Similarity of Gradients featuresabstractGender identification has been a hot research topic with wide application requirements from social life. In general, effective feature representation is the key to solving this problem. In this paper, a new feature named Self-Similarity of Gradients (GSS) is proposed, which captures pairwise statistics of localized gradient distributions. There are three contributions made by us to practical gender identification. First, GSS features are proposed for gender identification in the wild, which achieve good performance compared with baseline approaches. Second, we originally utilize 31-dimensional HOG for practical gender identification and its excellent results demonstrates that HOG with both contrast sensitive and insensitive information is a better fit for this topic than that with only contrast insensitive information. Last, feature combination and multi-classifier combination strategies are adopted and the best gender identification performance is achieved. Experimental results show that the combination of GSS, HOG and LBP using a linear SVM outperforms state-of-the-art on the LFW database, which meets the “wild” condition. | 2014 | Scene-Adaptive Hierarchical Data Association for Multiple Objects TrackingabstractObtaining reliable and discriminative target representation are two vital tasks for data association in multi-tracking. Pervious works always directly combine bunch of features for more discriminative target representation, but this is prone to error accumulation and unnecessary computational cost, which on the contrary may increase identity switches in data association. Moreover, reliability of a same feature in different scenes may vary a lot, especially for currently widespread network cameras, which have been settled in complex and various scenes, previous fixed feature selection scheme cannot meet general requirements. To address this problem, we propose a scene-adaptive hierarchical data association scheme, which adaptively selects features which have higher reliability on target representation in applied scene, and gradually combines features to the minimum requirements of discriminating ambiguous targets. Hierarchical feature space is constructed according to reliability of features in the multi-tracking system, and data association is conducted in different layers of the feature space adaptively. Our algorithm is validated on various challenging RGB-D and RGB datasets recorded in various indoor and outdoor scenes, for diversities of both features and scenes. Experimental results validate its effectiveness and efficiency. Can Wang 0006, Hong Liu 0008, Yuan Gao 0008 |
