| 2008 | Fixed-threshold SMO for Joint Constraint Learning Algorithm of Structural SVMabstractIn this paper, we describe a fixed-threshold sequential minimal optimization (FSMO) for a joint constraint learning algorithm of structural classification SVM problems. Because FSMO uses the fact that the joint constraint formulation of structural SVM has b=0, FSMO breaks down the quadratic programming (QP) problems of structural SVM into a series of smallest QP problems, each involving only one variable. By using only one variable, FSMO is advantageous in that each QP sub-problem does not need subset selection. Changki Lee, Hyunki Kim, Myung-Gil Jang |

| 2007 | A Case study of Edutainment Robot: Applying Voice Question Answering to Intelligent RobotabstractThis paper presents a case study of edutainment robot, which is an intelligent robot for educational use with a voice-QA model applied. The emphatic functions of our robot are: analyzing spoken question from a student, finding an appropriate answer in Korean encyclopedia, and then serving the answer with speech synthesis. We develop the ESTk, which is an Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) system based on Finite State Network (FSN) for processing Korean spoken questions. For answer extraction, we utilize machine learning techniques and pattern extraction method. With our live-update interaction method, our robot can be extended with new knowledge in real-time. By conducting a quiz game, we show a possibility of our robot as an edutainment robot. Hyo-Jung Oh, Chung-Hee Lee, Yi-Gyu Hwang, Myung-Gil Jang, Jeon Gue Park, Yun Kun Lee |

| 2007 | Semantic passage segmentation based on sentence topics for question answeringabstractWe propose a semantic passage segmentation method for a Question Answering (QA) system. We define a semantic passage as sentences grouped by semantic coherence, determined by the topic assigned to individual sentences. Topic assignments are done by a sentence classifier based on a statistical classification technique, Maximum Entropy (ME), combined with multiple linguistic features. We ran experiments to evaluate the proposed method and its impact on application tasks, passage retrieval and template-filling for question answering. The experimental result shows that our semantic passage retrieval method using topic matching is more useful than fixed length passage retrieval. With the template-filling task used for information extraction in the QA system, the value of the sentence topic assignment method was reinforced. Hyo-Jung Oh, Sung-Hyon Myaeng, Myung-Gil Jang |

| 1999 | Using Mutual Information to Resolve Query Translation Ambiguities and Query Term WeightingabstractAn easy way of translating queries in one language to the other for cross-language information retrieval (IR) is to use a simple bilingual dictionary. Because of the general-purpose nature of such dictionaries, however, this simple method yields a severe translation ambiguity problem. This paper describes the degree to which this problem arises in Korean-English cross-language IR and suggests a relatively simple yet effective method for disambiguation using mutual information statistics obtained only from the target document collection. In this method, mutual information is used not only to select the best candidate but also to assign a weight to query terms in the target language. Our experimental results based on the TREC-6 collection shows that this method can achieve up to 85% of the monolingual retrieval case and 96% of the manual disambiguation case.
