2024 Communication Bounds for the Distributed Experts Problem
abstract
In this work, we study the experts problem in the distributed setting where an expert's cost needs to be aggregated across multiple servers. Our study considers various communication models such as the message-passing model and the broadcast model, along with multiple aggregation functions, such as summing and taking the $\ell_p$ norm of an expert's cost across servers. We propose the first communication-efficient protocols that achieve near-optimal regret in these settings, even against a strong adversary who can choose the inputs adaptively. Additionally, we give a conditional lower bound showing that the communication of our protocols is nearly optimal. Finally, we implement our protocols and demonstrate empirical savings on the HPO-B benchmarks.

2022 ioTree: a battery-free wearable system with biocompatible sensors for continuous tree health monitoring
abstract
We present a low-maintenance, wind-powered, battery-free, biocompatible, tree wearable, and intelligent sensing system, namely IoTree, to monitor water and nutrient levels inside a living tree. IoTree system includes tiny-size, biocompatible, and implantable sensors that continuously measure the impedance variations inside the living tree's xylem, where water and nutrients are transported from the root to the upper parts. The collected data are then compressed and transmitted to a base station located at up to 1.8 kilometers (approximately 1.1 miles) away. The entire IoTree system is powered by wind energy and controlled by an adaptive computing technique called block-based intermittent computing, ensuring the forward progress and data consistency under intermittent power and allowing the firmware to execute with the most optimal memory and energy usage. We prototype IoTree that opportunistically performs sensing, data compression, and long-range communication tasks without batteries. During in-lab experiments, IoTree also obtains the accuracy of 91.08% and 90.51% in measuring 10 levels of nutrients, NH3 and K2O, respectively. While tested with Burkwood Viburnum and White Bird trees in the indoor environment, IoTree data strongly correlated with multiple watering and fertilizing events. We also deployed IoTree on a grapevine farm for 30 days, and the system is able to provide sufficient measurements every day.

2014 Enhancement of Sentence-Generation Based Summarization Method By Modelling Inter-Sentential Consequent-Relationships
abstract
In the text summarization field, based on how to create the summary, there are two main theoretic approaches (E. Lloret [22], K. Jezek and J. Steinberger [13]): the trend based on "extraction" in which the most important sentences in the source text will be chosen; the trend based on "abstraction" in which a new reduced grammatical and meaningful text will be created based on understanding the original text. In this paper, we focus on "abstraction" approach to summarize Vietnamese texts having only two sentences. We also restrict this research to consider verbs representing "actions" and "states", which appear in both two sentences of source text. Our method is based on modeling and processing Consequent-Relations between the verbs in the first sentence and the second sentence. The aim of this research is to generate new Vietnamese meaning-summarizing sentences which satisfy two requirements: (i) summarize the true meaning of the source pair of sentences; (ii) have natural expression for summarization. We also experiment and assess our approach by proposing a new quantitative evaluation method that suitable for the research approach.

2014 Improving Techniques for Summarizing the Meaning of Two Vietnamese Sentences by Adding a Meaningful Relationship between Two Actions
abstract
The main objective of this paper is to present improvements for our previous research in generating new reducing Vietnamese sentence for summarizing source pair of Vietnamese sentences, with the purpose that helps the new reducing sentence becoming more natural for the cognition of Vietnamese native persons. The improvements based on the main idea that besides considering the inter-sentential anaphoric pronoun relationship between two source Vietnamese sentences, we also consider the relationship between two actions: intransitive action, transitive action. With our sentence-generation based approach of text summarization, we also present a new evaluation method to evaluate the experiment.

2008 Perfluorocarbon Nanoparticles for Molecular Imaging and Targeted Therapeutics
abstract
Molecular imaging is a novel tool that has allowed noninvasive diagnostic imaging to transition from gross anatomical description to identification of specific tissue epitopes and observation of biological processes at the cellular level. Until recently, this technique was confined to the field of nuclear imaging; however, advances in nanotechnology have extended this research to include magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, positron emission tomography (PET), single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), and ultrasound (US), among others. The application of nanotechnology to MR, SPECT, and US molecular imaging has generated several candidate contrast agents. We discuss the application of one multimodality platform, a targeted perfluorocarbon nanoparticle. Our results show that it is useful for noninvasive detection with all three imaging modalities and may additionally be used for local drug delivery.
