Improving Our Reviewing ProcessesabstractOur reviewing practices today are failing. With the number of ACL submissions steadily growing over the last several years (for example, ACL 2009 had a 24% increase in submissions over ACL 2008), the need for more reviewers has become more pronounced. However, qualified reviewers are becoming hard to find, and when they are found, they are often hard-pressed for time. As a result, slipshod reviews are becoming commonplace. Allowing this situation to continue as before will result in the deterioration of our ability to recognize excellence in our research. An ‘intervention’ is therefore needed. As I see it, there are two distinct problems to tackle: first, a lack of qualified reviewers, and second, a lack of quality control in reviews. After discussing these, I will suggest some solutions that I believe are worth implementing. Inderjeet Mani

Machine Learning of Temporal RelationsabstractThis paper investigates a machine learning approach for temporally ordering and anchoring events in natural language texts. To address data sparseness, we used temporal reasoning as an over-sampling method to dramatically expand the amount of training data, resulting in predictive accuracy on link labeling as high as 93% using a Maximum Entropy classifier on human annotated data. This method compared favorably against a series of increasingly sophisticated baselines involving expansion of rules derived from human intuitions. | 2004 | Automatic TIMEX2 tagging of Korean newsabstractThis article reports on a temporal tagger for Korean based on a Korean extension of the TIDES TIMEX2 guidelines. The extension, which primarily addresses the idiosyncrasies of Korean morphology, shows high inter-annotator reliability (0.893 F-measure for tag extent) when applied to a corpus of Korean newspaper articles. A machine-learning approach based on rote learning from a human-edited, automatically-derived dictionary of temporal expressions is compared with a second approach that adds manual patterns, and a third onethat tries to learn the patterns. Results for the first two are promising (0.87 F-measure for tag extent). Overall, the article shows that rote learning approaches can be very useful when language-specific features such as morphology are taken into account. | 2004 | Introduction to the special issue on temporal information processingabstractTime is a key dimension of our information space, with many applications standing to benefit from exploiting it. This special issue is devoted to temporal information processing for natural language as well as temporal reasoning. We begin by describing some of the ways time is expressed in natural language, and the particular requirements this imposes on information processing systems. We then provide an overview of current annotation-based approaches to temporal information extraction, followed by an introduction to the relevant literature on temporal reasoning. We also provide brief synopses of the articles in this issue, situating them in a broader context. We end with administrative remarks about the creation of this special issue. | 2002 | SUMMAC: a text summarization evaluationabstractThe TIPSTER Text Summarization Evaluation (SUMMAC) has developed several new extrinsic and intrinsic methods for evaluating summaries. It has established definitively that automatic text summarization is very effective in relevance assessment tasks on news articles. Summaries as short as 17% of full text length sped up decision-making by almost a factor of 2 with no statistically significant degradation in accuracy. Analysis of feedback forms filled in after each decision indicated that the intelligibility of present-day machine-generated summaries is high. Systems that performed most accurately in the production of indicative and informative topic-related summaries used term frequency and co-occurrence statistics, and vocabulary overlap comparisons between text passages. However, in the absence of a topic, these statistical methods do not appear to provide any additional leverage: in the case of generic summaries, the systems were indistinguishable in accuracy. The paper discusses some of the tradeoffs and challenges faced by the evaluation, and also lists some of the lessons learned, impacts, and possible future directions. The evaluation methods used in the SUMMAC evaluation are of interest to both summarization evaluation as well as evaluation of other ‘output-related’ NLP technologies, where there may be many potentially acceptable outputs, with no automatic way to compare them. | 2001 | Producing Biographical Summaries: Combining Linguistic Knowledge with Corpus StatisticsabstractWe describe a biographical multi-document summarizer that summarizes information about people described in the news. The summarizer uses corpus statistics along with linguistic knowledge to select and merge descriptions of people from a document collection, removing redundant descriptions. The summarization components have been extensively evaluated for coherence, accuracy, and non-redundancy of the descriptions produced. Barry Schiffman, Inderjeet Mani, Kristian J. Concepcion

Recent Developments in Text SummarizationabstractWith the explosion in the quantity of on-line text and multimedia information in recent years, demand for text summarization technology is growing. Increased pressure for technology advances is coming from users of the web, on-line information sources, and new mobile devices, as well as from the need for corporate knowledge management. Commercial companies are increasingly starting to offer text summarization capabilities, often bundled with information retrieval tools. In this paper, I will discuss the significance of some recent developments in summarization technology. Inderjeet Mani

Robust Temporal Processing of NewsabstractWe introduce an annotation scheme for temporal expressions, and describe a method for resolving temporal expressions in print and broadcast news. The system, which is based on both hand-crafted and machine-learnt rules, achieves an 83.2% accuracy (Fmeasure) against hand-annotated data. Some initial steps towards tagging event chronologies are also described. | 2000 | Discussion Panel on Evaluation in Generation ResearchabstractEvaluation is critical in offering feedback on progress to both developers and potential consumers of NLG technology. However, evaluation has thus far not been as well-established in NLG as it has become in NLU. This panel will discuss evaluation methods and resources. It is aimed at building a better understanding of NLG evaluation methods, and hopefully arriving at steps to facilitate future evaluations. Inderjeet Mani

| 1999 | Improving Summaries by Revising ThemabstractThis paper describes a program which revises a draft text by aggregating together descriptions of discourse entities, in addition to deleting extraneous information. In contrast to knowledge-rich sentence aggregation approaches explored in the past, this approach exploits statistical parsing and robust coreference detection. In an evaluation involving revision of topic-related summaries using informativeness measures from the TIPSTER SUMMAC evaluation, the results show gains in informativeness without compromising readability. | 1998 | Using NLP for Machine Learning of User ProfilesabstractAs more information becomes available electronically, tools for finding information of interest to users becomes increasingly important. The goal of the research described here is to build a system for generating comprehensible user profiles that accurately capture user interest with minimum user interaction. The research focuses on the importance of a suitable generalization hierarchy and representation for learning profiles which are predictively accurate and comprehensible. In our experiments we evaluated both traditional features based on weighted term vectors as well as subject features corresponding to categories which could be drawn from a thesaurus. Our experiments, conducted in the context of a content-based profiling system for on-line newspapers on the World Wide Web (the IDD News Browser), demonstrate the importance of a generalization hierarchy and the promise of combining natural language processing techniques with machine learning (ML) to address an information retrieval (IR) problem.
