2006 Minimap: a web page visualization method for mobile phones
abstract
The Web has become available even on mobile phones, but the current methods to view large pages on small screens have not been highly usable. Current mobile phone browsers reformat Web pages to a single column that fits the screen width. Because not all content is comprehensible in this format, browsers provide a second mode for viewing pages in the same layout as on a PC. We have developed a modeless Web page visualization method called Minimap that shows pages in a modified Original layout. We conducted a long-term usability study with 20 participants to compare the state-of-the-art mobile phone browser with this new method. 18 participants preferred the new method, and it also scored better in more detailed usability ratings.

2002 A hierarchical framework model of mobile security
abstract
As wireless communications and mobile multimedia services are booming nowadays, systematic research of the overall aspects of mobile security is crucial. This paper presents a framework model for guiding the systematic investigation of mobile security. Based on the introduction of some background viewpoints of security targets from a novel perspective, the framework is described as a hierarchical model in which mobile security research is partitioned into three different layers, including property theory, limited targets, and classified applications. Key research topics in each layer are discussed respectively in detail. In the property theory layer, some basic topics related to security are provided. Then, security issues in networks, computing, and multimedia processing are fused together in the limited targets layer upon the limitation operator of mobile technology. Finally, the classified applications layer proposes a brief categorization of mobile applications, and the security topics in one representative field, i.e. mobile E-commerce, are presented as an illustration.

1999 Content model for mobile adaptation of multimedia information
abstract
The penetration of Internet services has introduced a set of transmission and presentation standards. At the same time, the limited bandwidth resources of cellular networks and terminals set strict requirements on the transmission and presentation of multimedia. This paper proposes a new, abstract model to represent and adapt multimedia to hybrid environments. The model includes a layered mapping of semantic and physical entities and is combined under the taxonomy of multimedia adaptation to optimize end-to-end service. We conclude with an example case that utilizes the proposed techniques.

1998 Multimedia adaptation for dynamic environments
abstract
This paper presents a new approach for adapting a multimedia presentation into heterogeneous and dynamically changing environments. A novel media adaptation taxonomy is proposed that includes synchronized media optimization and scaling. The taxonomy incorporates multi-dimensional interaction between media, service requirements and presentation. Network properties, terminal types and integration capabilities differ in presentation requirement profile(s). Understanding the relationship between media information and these service characteristics benefits the presentation process. Using our taxonomy, a concrete service presentation is shown, with adaptation properties in different situations and for different types of terminals. The advantages of the content-based adaptation taxonomy are demonstrated with an example of an entire (end-to-end) multimedia service system in a dynamic environment.
