2015 Design of an NGS MicroRNA predictor using multilayer hierarchical MapReduce framework
abstract
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a group of small noncoding RNA (ncRNA) molecules that play an important role in biological functions. This paper proposes a microRNA prediction application, which is based on the multi-layer hierarchical MapReduce framework and provides four prediction workflows for four different datasets: miRNA-like sequences, miRNA cluster sequences, unknown miRNA sequences and the next generation sequencing (NGS) sequences. These workflows include four core procedures for finding the genome location, applying the biological filtering criteria and a genetic algorithm based pre-miRNA classifier. Each procedure works as a MapReduce task and uses JSON format to translate the MapReduce output to the next MapReduce procedure. Experimental results show that the proposed miRNA predictor not only achieves high sensitivity and accuracy, but also has ability to process more than million sequences in acceptable time by relying on the multi-layer hierarchical MapReduce framework.

2013 A cloud service for the evaluation of company's financial health using XBRL-based financial statements
abstract
Financial statements of all listed and over the counter (OTC) companies collected by stock exchange represent valuable big open data. Therefore, automatic processing and analyzing such big data would create tremendous added value economically. In this paper, we design and implement a cloud service for evaluating company's financial health using XBRL-based financial statements collected by Taiwan Stock Exchange Corporation (TWSE). The XBRL-based financial statements are parsed and stored as key-value pairs into MongoDB, which is a kind of NoSQL database. The proposed system is designed using three-tier architecture for flexibility and maintainability. It also provides user-friendly interface with various charts. The proposed system indeed demonstrates powerful benefits of implementing interactive data using XBRL for financial disclosure documents in big data era.

2011 Efficient Identity-Based Key Management for Configurable Hierarchical Cloud Computing Environment
abstract
The security of cloud computing data centers is an important issue. In recent years, some schemes of encryption and authentication based on hierarchical identity-based key management systems have been developed. However, these schemes did not consider the case when PKG (Private Key Generator) went down. In this paper, we proposed an identity-based key management scheme for configurable hierarchical cloud computing environment. The proposed scheme requires fewer computations on encryption, and authentication, and it also provides efficient key reconstruction in case of PKG failures. As a result, the scheme proposed in this paper can reduce the key reconstructing cost efficiently on cloud computing data center.

2011 On the Security of Self-Certified Public Keys
abstract
Many cryptosystems have been developed to solve the problem of information security, and some approaches are based on the self-certified public key proposed by Girault. In Girault’s scheme, the public key is computed cooperatively by both the system authority (SA) and the user. One of the advantages is that the public key is able to implicitly authenticate itself without any additional certificates. Another advantage is that the SA is not able to forge a public key without knowing the user’s secret key. Despite the advantages of Girault’s system, in this paper, the authors demonstrate that the system still suffers from two main weaknesses. As a result, the authors propose a slight improvement on Girault’s system.

2010 An indoor location-based service using access points as signal strength data collectors
abstract
WLAN location determination algorithms can be classified into client-based approach and infrastructure-based approach. This paper proposes an infrastructure-based indoor location determination algorithm using access points (APs) as received signal strength (RSS) data collectors. Beside the role of RSS data collector, the APs can simultaneously play the role of communication. In the proposed system, each AP runs OpenWrt, Kismet, and MySQL client for collecting signal strength data from mobile devices. The location server builds a Nearest Neighborhood estimation model based on RSS measurements of the mobile device. In the example application, the system manager can easily collect training data and input location-aware contents using a web page. Once a mobile device enters the area with location-aware services, the AP will collect the RSS and IP of this device. Then when the mobile device connects to the web page provided by our system, the system will locate this device and show the location-based services to the user. The proposed system has the features of low deployment costs without additional hardware and a web-based interface for location-aware service content provider. Once the system is deployed, the content provider can easily create the location-aware services.

2008 A new authentication protocol based on pointer forwarding for mobile communications
abstract
Abstract A frequently moving mobile user in GSM must re‐register at the HLR frequently, and, therefore, the signaling traffic is overhead and HLR database update cost raised. In this paper, the authors propose a new authentication protocol, based on pointer forwarding to reduce the HLR update cost and traffic load for the MS authentication protocol. The proposed protocol for GSM can achieve some objectives described in Introduction. Compared with other authentication protocols, our protocol is efficient. Copyright © 2007 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

1989 Incremental Protocol Verfication Using Deductive Database Systems
abstract
A deductive approach which incorporates first-order logic into a relational database is proposed to remedy the problems incurred in the relational algebraic approach. The method not only allows recursive definitions for more complex logical reasoning but also provides a uniform query interface to the users for verifying functional properties of a protocol. Most important, with the deductibility of the deductive database it becomes possible to define algorithms for the incremental verification method, which speeds up the verification process by reverifying protocols without generating the global states from scratch.>
