2026 CPFTransGAN: A Cross Perception Fusion Transformer-Based Generative Adversarial Network for Head and Neck Cancer Dose Prediction in Radiotherapy
abstract
Radiation therapyis one of the primary treatment modalities for head and neck (H&N) cancer in clinical practice, aiming to deliver sufficient dose to Planning Target Volume (PTV) while protecting surrounding Organs at Risk (OAR) from or minimizing exposure to radiation. Quantitative dose prediction of various tissues and organs is a prerequisite for implementing intelligent precision radiotherapy. In order to improve dose prediction accuracy, we propose a generative adversarial network CPFTransGAN based on Cross Perception Fusion Transformer (CPF Transformer). Specifically, we design a CPF Transformer module through deeply integrating CNN and Transformer. Using the CPF Transformer as basic unit, we constructed a generator with four-stage encoding-decoding structure called CPFTransGenerator. An adaptive weight loss is used to train the discriminator to alleviate the issues of imbalance training in adversarial learning. To further improve the prediction accuracy, a multiscale cross-window encoding network is designed, which can constrain the differences between predicted dose and the reference one at different granularity levels by calculating feature losses between them at different scales. The proposed method is evaluated on two public head and neck cancer datasets and a local clinical dataset. Extensive experiments demonstrate the superior performance of our method compared with the state-of-the-art ones.

2025 FocalTransNet: A Hybrid Focal-Enhanced Transformer Network for Medical Image Segmentation
abstract
CNNs have demonstrated superior performance in medical image segmentation. To overcome the limitation of only using local receptive field, previous work has attempted to integrate Transformers into convolutional network components such as encoders, decoders, or skip connections. However, these methods can only establish long-distance dependencies for some specific patterns and usually neglect the loss of fine-grained details during downsampling in multi-scale feature extraction. To address the issues, we present a novel hybrid Transformer network called FocalTransNet. Specifically, we construct a focal-enhanced (FE) Transformer module by introducing dense cross-connections into a CNN-Transformer dual-path structure and deploy the FE Transformer throughout the entire encoder. Different from existing hybrid networks that employ embedding or stacking strategies, the proposed model allows for a comprehensive extraction and deep fusion of both local and global features at different scales. Besides, we propose a symmetric patch merging (SPM) module for downsampling, which can retain the fine-grained details by establishing a specific information compensation mechanism. We evaluated the proposed method on four different medical image segmentation benchmarks. The proposed method outperforms previous state-of-the-art convolutional networks, Transformers, and hybrid networks. The code for FocalTransNet is publicly available at https://github.com/nemanjajoe/FocalTransNet.

2024 An Unsupervised Image Dehazing Method Using Patch-Line and Fuzzy Clustering-Line Priors
abstract
Outdoor images taken in haze usually exhibit contrast reduction, color distortion, and detail loss. Removing the haze from a given image is a tough issue owing to its highly ill-posed property. To restore the haze-free image effectively, we develop an unsupervised dehazing method using patch-line and fuzzy clustering-line priors in this paper. The method obtains the dehazed image by inversely solving the atmospheric scattering model, which involves in estimating two key parameters, including atmospheric light and scene transmission. First, the orientation of atmospheric light is achieved by using a patch-line prior. Then, a quadtree subspace hierarchical searching scheme is designed to get the magnitude by calculating the differences between the mean and variance of each component for local regions. Besides, a fuzzy clustering-line prior combined with a guided filtering is proposed to estimate the scene transmission for each pixel. The proposed method can obtain the dehazed image directly without any training process and achieve much better performance than many existing ones with less space and time cost.

2023 Pulmonary Nodule Detection from 3D CT Image with a Two-Stage Network
abstract
Early detection of lung nodules is an important means of reducing the lung cancer mortality rate. In this paper, we propose a three‐dimensional CT image lung nodule detection method based on parallel pooling and dense blocks, which includes two parts, i.e., candidate nodule extraction and false positive suppression. First, a dense U‐shaped backbone network with parallel pooling is proposed to obtain the candidate nodule probability map. The parallel pooling structure uses multiple pooling operations for downsampling to capture spatial information comprehensively and address the problem of information loss resulting from maximum and average pooling in the shallow layers. Then, a parasitic network with parallel pooling, dense blocks, and attention modules is designed to suppress false positive nodules. The parasitic network takes the multiscale feature maps of the backbone network as the input. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method significantly improves the accuracy of lung nodule detection, achieving a CPM score of 0.91, which outperforms many existing methods.

2023 TD-Net: A Hybrid End-to-End Network for Automatic Liver Tumor Segmentation From CT Images
abstract
Liver tumor segmentation plays an essential role in diagnosis and treatment of hepatocellular carcinoma or metastasis. However, accurate and automatic tumor segmentation remains a challenging task, owing to vague boundaries and large variations in shapes, sizes, and locations of liver tumors. In this paper, we propose a novel hybrid end-to-end network, called TD-Net, which incorporates Transformer and direction information into convolution network to segment liver tumor from CT images automatically. The proposed TD-Net is composed of a shared encoder, two decoding branches, four skip connections, and a direction guidance block. The shared encoder is utilized to extract multi-level feature information, and the two decoding branches are respectively designed to produce initial segmentation map and direction information. To preserve spatial information, four skip connections are used to concatenate each encoder layer and its corresponding decoder layer, and in the fourth skip connection a Transformer module is constructed to extract global context. Furthermore, a direction guidance block is well-designed to rectify feature maps to further improve segmentation accuracy. Extensive experiments conducted on public LiTS and 3DIRCADb datasets validate that the proposed TD-Net can effectively segment liver tumor from CT images in an end-to-end manner and its segmentation accuracy surpasses those of many existing methods.

2023 AC-E Network: Attentive Context-Enhanced Network for Liver Segmentation
abstract
Segmentation of liver from CT scans is essential in computer-aided liver disease diagnosis and treatment. However, the 2DCNN ignores the 3D context, and the 3DCNN suffers from numerous learnable parameters and high computational cost. In order to overcome this limitation, we propose an Attentive Context-Enhanced Network (AC-E Network) consisting of 1) an attentive context encoding module (ACEM) that can be integrated into the 2D backbone to extract 3D context without a sharp increase in the number of learnable parameters; 2) a dual segmentation branch including complemental loss making the network attend to both the liver region and boundary so that getting the segmented liver surface with high accuracy. Extensive experiments on the LiTS and the 3D-IRCADb datasets demonstrate that our method outperforms existing approaches and is competitive to the state-of-the-art 2D-3D hybrid method on the equilibrium of the segmentation precision and the number of model parameters.

2022 Text2video: Text-Driven Talking-Head Video Synthesis with Personalized Phoneme - Pose Dictionary
abstract
With the advance of deep learning technology, automatic video generation from audio or text has become an emerging and promising research topic. In this paper, we present a novel approach to synthesize video from the text. The method builds a phoneme-pose dictionary and trains a generative adversarial network (GAN) to generate video from interpolated phoneme poses. Compared to audio-driven video generation algorithms, our approach has a number of advantages: 1) It only needs about 1 min of the training data, which is significantly less than audio-driven approaches; 2) It is more flexible and not subject to vulnerability due to speaker variation; 3) It significantly reduces the preprocessing and training time from several days for audio-based methods to 4 hours, which is 10 times faster. We perform extensive experiments to compare the proposed method with state-of-the-art talking face generation methods on a benchmark dataset and datasets of our own. The results demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of our approach.

2012 Video Stereolization: Combining Motion Analysis with User Interaction
abstract
We present a semiautomatic system that converts conventional videos into stereoscopic videos by combining motion analysis with user interaction, aiming to transfer as much as possible labeling work from the user to the computer. In addition to the widely used structure from motion (SFM) techniques, we develop two new methods that analyze the optical flow to provide additional qualitative depth constraints. They remove the camera movement restriction imposed by SFM so that general motions can be used in scene depth estimation-the central problem in mono-to-stereo conversion. With these algorithms, the user's labeling task is significantly simplified. We further developed a quadratic programming approach to incorporate both quantitative depth and qualitative depth (such as these from user scribbling) to recover dense depth maps for all frames, from which stereoscopic view can be synthesized. In addition to visual results, we present user study results showing that our approach is more intuitive and less labor intensive, while producing 3D effect comparable to that from current state-of-the-art interactive algorithms.

2011 Interreflection removal for photometric stereo by using spectrum-dependent albedo
abstract
We present a novel method that can separate m-bounced light and remove the interreflections in a photometric stereo setup. Under the assumption of a uniformly colored lambertian surface, the intensity of a point in the scene is the sum of 1-bounced light through m-bounced light rays. Ruled by the law of diffuse reflection, whenever a light ray is bounced by the surface, its intensity will be attenuated by the factor of albedo ρ. This implies that the measured intensity value can be written as a polynomial function of ρ, and the intensity contribution of the m-bounced light rays are expressed by the term of ρm. Therefore, when we change the surface albedo, the intensity of the m-bounced light is changed to the order of m. This non-linearity gives us the possibility to separate the m-bounced light. In practice, we illuminate the scene with different light colors to effectively simulate different surface albedos since albedo is spectrum dependent. Once the m-bounced light rays are separated, we can perform the photometric stereo algorithm on the 1-bounced light (direct lighting) images to produce the 3D shape without the impact of interreflections. Experiments have shown that we get significantly improved scene reconstruction with a minimum of two color images.

2009 Joint depth and alpha matte optimization via fusion of stereo and time-of-flight sensor
abstract
We present a new approach to iteratively estimate both high-quality depth map and alpha matte from a single image or a video sequence. Scene depth, which is invariant to illumination changes, color similarity and motion ambiguity, provides a natural and robust cue for foreground/ background segmentation - a prerequisite for matting. The image mattes, on the other hand, encode rich information near boundaries where either passive or active sensing method performs poorly. We develop a method to combine the complementary nature of scene depth and alpha matte to mutually enhance their qualities. We formulate depth inference as a global optimization problem where information from passive stereo, active range sensor and matte is merged. The depth map is used in turn to enhance the matting. In addition, we extend this approach to video matting by incorporating temporal coherence, which reduces flickering in the composite video. We show that these techniques lead to improved accuracy and robustness for both static and dynamic scenes.

2009 Modeling deformable objects from a single depth camera
abstract
We propose a novel approach to reconstruct complete 3D deformable models over time by a single depth camera, provided that most parts of the models are observed by the camera at least once. The core of this algorithm is based on the assumption that the deformation is continuous and predictable in a short temporal interval. While the camera can only capture part of a whole surface at any time instant, partial surfaces reconstructed from different times are assembled together to form a complete 3D surface for each time instant, even when the shape is under severe deformation. A mesh warping algorithm based on linear mesh deformation is used to align different partial surfaces. A volumetric method is then used to combine partial surfaces, fix missing holes, and smooth alignment errors. Our experiment shows that this approach is able to reconstruct visually plausible 3D surface deformation results with a single camera.

2009 Physically guided liquid surface modeling from videos
abstract
We present an image-based reconstruction framework to model real water scenes captured by stereoscopic video. In contrast to many image-based modeling techniques that rely on user interaction to obtain high-quality 3D models, we instead apply automatically calculated physically-based constraints to refine the initial model. The combination of image-based reconstruction with physically-based simulation allows us to model complex and dynamic objects such as fluid. Using a depth map sequence as initial conditions, we use a physically based approach that automatically fills in missing regions, removes outliers, and refines the geometric shape so that the final 3D model is consistent to both the input video data and the laws of physics. Physically-guided modeling also makes interpolation or extrapolation in the space-time domain possible, and even allows the fusion of depth maps that were taken at different times or viewpoints. We demonstrated the effectiveness of our framework with a number of real scenes, all captured using only a single pair of cameras.

2008 Real-time Light Fall-off Stereo
abstract
We present a real-time depth recovery system using Light Fall-off Stereo (LFS). Our system contains two co-axial point light sources (LEDs) synchronized with a video camera. The video camera captures the scene under these two LEDs in complementary states(e.g., one on, one off). Based on the inverse square law for light intensity, the depth can be directly solved using the pixel ratio from two consecutive frames. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach with a number of real world scenes. Quantitative evaluation shows that our system compares favorably to other commercial real-time 3D range sensors, particularly in textured areas. We believe our system offers a low-cost high-resolution alternative for depth sensing under controlled lighting.

2008 Robust and Accurate Visual Echo Cancelation in a Full-duplex Projector-Camera System
abstract
In this paper we study the problem of "visual echo" in a full-duplex projector-camera system for telecollaboration applications. Visual echo is defined as the appearance of projected contents observed by the camera. It can potentially saturate the projected contents, similar to audio echo in telephone conversation. Our approach to visual echo cancellation includes an offline calibration procedure that records the geometric and photometric transfer between the projector and the camera in a look-up table. During run-time, projected contents in the captured video are identified using the calibration information and suppressed, therefore achieving the goal of cancelling visual echo. Our approach can accurately handle full-color images under arbitrary reflectance of display surfaces and photometric response of the projector or camera. It is robust to geometric registration errors and quantization effects and is therefore particularly effective for high-frequency contents such as texts and hand drawings. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach with a variety of real images in a full-duplex projector-camera system.

2007 Light Fall-off Stereo
abstract
We present light fall-off stereo-LFS-a new method for computing depth from scenes beyond lambertian reflectance and texture. LFS takes a number of images from a stationary camera as the illumination source moves away from the scene. Based on the inverse square law for light intensity, the ratio images are directly related to scene depth from the perspective of the light source. Using this as the invariant, we developed both local and global methods for depth recovery. Compared to previous reconstruction methods for non-lamebrain scenes, LFS needs as few as two images, does not require calibrated camera or light sources, or reference objects in the scene. We demonstrated the effectiveness of LFS with a variety of real-world scenes.

2006 Real-time Global Stereo Matching Using Hierarchical Belief Propagation
abstract
In this paper, we present a belief propagation based global algorithm that generates high quality results while maintaining real-time performance. To our knowledge, it is the first BP based global method that runs at real-time speed. Our efficiency performance gains mainly from the parallelism of graphics hardware, which leads to a 45 times speedup compared to the CPU implementation. To qualify the accurancy of our approach, the experimental results are evaluated on the Middlebury data sets, showing that our approach is among the best (ranked first in the new evaluation system) for all real-time approaches. In addition, since the running time of general BP is linear to the number of iterations, adopting a large number of iterations is not feasible for practical applications. Hence a novel approach is proposed to adaptively update pixel cost. Unlike general BP methods, the running time of our proposed algorithm dramatically converges.
