| 2025 | REGen: Multimodal Retrieval-Embedded Generation for Long-to-Short Video EditingabstractShort videos are an effective tool for promoting contents and improving knowledge accessibility. While existing extractive video summarization methods struggle to produce a coherent narrative, existing abstractive methods cannot `quote' from the input videos, i.e., inserting short video clips in their outputs. In this work, we explore novel video editing models for generating shorts that feature a coherent narrative with embedded video insertions extracted from a long input video. We propose a novel retrieval-embedded generation framework that allows a large language model to quote multimodal resources while maintaining a coherent narrative. Our proposed REGen system first generates the output story script with quote placeholders using a finetuned large language model, and then uses a novel retrieval model to replace the quote placeholders by selecting a video clip that best supports the narrative from a pool of candidate quotable video clips. We examine the proposed method on the task of documentary teaser generation, where short interview insertions are commonly used to support the narrative of a documentary. Our objective evaluations show that the proposed method can effectively insert short video clips while maintaining a coherent narrative. In a subjective survey, we show that our proposed method outperforms existing abstractive and extractive approaches in terms of coherence, alignment, and realism in teaser generation. | 2021 | DouZero: Mastering DouDizhu with Self-Play Deep Reinforcement LearningabstractGames are abstractions of the real world, where artificial agents learn to compete and cooperate with other agents. While significant achievements have been made in various perfect- and imperfect-information games, DouDizhu (a.k.a. Fighting the Landlord), a three-player card game, is still unsolved. DouDizhu is a very challenging domain with competition, collaboration, imperfect information, large state space, and particularly a massive set of possible actions where the legal actions vary significantly from turn to turn. Unfortunately, modern reinforcement learning algorithms mainly focus on simple and small action spaces, and not surprisingly, are shown not to make satisfactory progress in DouDizhu. In this work, we propose a conceptually simple yet effective DouDizhu AI system, namely DouZero, which enhances traditional Monte-Carlo methods with deep neural networks, action encoding, and parallel actors. Starting from scratch in a single server with four GPUs, DouZero outperformed all the existing DouDizhu AI programs in days of training and was ranked the first in the Botzone leaderboard among 344 AI agents. Through building DouZero, we show that classic Monte-Carlo methods can be made to deliver strong results in a hard domain with a complex action space. The code and an online demo are released at https://github.com/kwai/DouZero with the hope that this insight could motivate future work. Daochen Zha, Jingru Xie, Wenye Ma, Xiangru Lian, Xia Ben Hu |

| 2020 | A Generalized Locally Linear Factorization Machine with Supervised Variational EncodingabstractFactorization Machines (FMs) learn weights for feature interactions, and achieve great success in many data mining tasks. Recently, Locally Linear Factorization Machines (LLFMs) have been proposed to capture the underlying structures of data for better performance. However, one obvious drawback of LLFM is that the local coding is only operated in the original feature space, which limits the model to be applied to high-dimensional and sparse data. In this work, we present a generalized LLFM (GLLFM) which overcomes this limitation by modeling the local coding procedure in a latent space. Moreover, a novel Supervised Variational Encoding (SVE) technique is proposed such that the distance can effectively describe the similarity between data points. Specifically, the proposed GLLFM-SVE trains several local FMs in the original space to model the higher order feature interactions effectively, where each FM associates to an anchor point in the latent space induced by SVE. The prediction for a data point is computed by a weighted sum of several local FMs, where the weights are determined by local coding coordinates with anchor points. Actually, GLLFM-SVE is quite flexible and other Neural Network (NN) based FMs can be easily embedded into this framework. Experimental results show that GLLFM-SVE significantly improves the performance of LLFM. By using NN-based FMs as local predictors, our model outperforms all the state-of-the-art methods on large-scale real-world benchmarks with similar number of parameters and comparable training time. | 2019 | Fast Single Image Reflection Suppression via Convex OptimizationabstractRemoving undesired reflections from images taken through the glass is of great importance in computer vision. It serves as a means to enhance the image quality for aesthetic purposes as well as to preprocess images in machine learning and pattern recognition applications. We propose a convex model to suppress the reflection from a single input image. Our model implies a partial differential equation with gradient thresholding, which is solved efficiently using Discrete Cosine Transform. Extensive experiments on synthetic and real-world images demonstrate that our approach achieves desirable reflection suppression results and dramatically reduces the execution time. | 2019 | RaFM: Rank-Aware Factorization MachinesabstractFatorization machines (FM) are a popular model class to learn pairwise interactions by a low-rank approximation. Different from existing FM-based approaches which use a fixed rank for all features, this paper proposes a Rank-Aware FM (RaFM) model which adopts pairwise interactions from embeddings with different ranks. The proposed model achieves a better performance on real-world datasets where different features have significantly varying frequencies of occurrences. Moreover, we prove that the RaFM model can be stored, evaluated, and trained as efficiently as one single FM, and under some reasonable conditions it can be even significantly more efficient than FM. RaFM improves the performance of FMs in both regression tasks and classification tasks while incurring less computational burden, therefore also has attractive potential in industrial applications. | 2018 | Online Adaptive Asymmetric Active Learning for Budgeted Imbalanced DataabstractThis paper investigates Online Active Learning (OAL) for imbalanced unlabeled datastream, where only a budget of labels can be queried to optimize some cost-sensitive performance measure. OAL can solve many real-world problems, such as anomaly detection in healthcare, finance and network security. In these problems, there are two key challenges: the query budget is often limited; the ratio between two classes is highly imbalanced. To address these challenges, existing work of OAL adopts either asymmetric losses or queries (an isolated asymmetric strategy) to tackle the imbalance, and uses first-order methods to optimize the cost-sensitive measure. However, they may incur two deficiencies: (1) the poor ability in handling imbalanced data due to the isolated asymmetric strategy; (2) relative slow convergence rate due to the first-order optimization. In this paper, we propose a novel Online Adaptive Asymmetric Active (OA3) learning algorithm, which is based on a new asymmetric strategy (merging both the asymmetric losses and queries strategies), and second-order optimization. We theoretically analyze its bounds, and also empirically evaluate it on four real-world online anomaly detection tasks. Promising results confirm the effectiveness and robustness of the proposed algorithm in various application domains. | 2012 | Multi-Channel l1 Regularized Convex Speech Enhancement Model and Fast Computation by the Split Bregman MethodabstractA convex speech enhancement (CSE) method is presented based on convex optimization and pause detection of the speech sources. Channel spatial difference is identified for enhancing each speech source individually while suppressing other interfering sources. Sparse unmixing filters indicating channel spatial differences are sought byl1norm regularization and the split Bregman method. A subdivided split Bregman method is developed for efficiently solving the problem in severely reverberant environments. The speech pause detection is based on a binary mask source separation method. The CSE method is evaluated objectively and subjectively, and found to outperform a list of existing blind speech separation approaches on both synthetic and room recorded speech mixtures in terms of the overall computational speed and separation quality. | 2011 | An L1-based variational model for Retinex theory and its application to medical imagesabstractHuman visual system (HVS) can perceive constant color under varying illumination conditions while digital images record information of both reflectance (physical color) of objects and illumination. Retinex theory, formulated by Edwin H. Land, aimed to simulate and explain this feature of HVS. However, to recover the reflectance from a given image is in general an ill-posed problem. In this paper, we establish an L1-based variational model for Retinex theory that can be solved by a fast computational approach based on Bregman iteration. Compared with previous works, our L1-Retinex method is more accurate for recovering the reflectance, which is illustrated by examples and statistics. In medical images such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), intensity inhomogeneity is often encountered due to bias fields. This is a similar formulation to Retinex theory while the MRI has some specific properties. We then modify the L1-Retinex method and develop a new algorithm for MRI data. We demonstrate the performance of our method by comparison with previous work on simulated and real data. Wenye Ma, Jean-Michel Morel, Stanley J. Osher, Aichi Chien |
