| 2025 | Unveil: Unified Visual-Textual Integration and Distillation for Multi-modal Document RetrievalabstractDocument retrieval in real-world scenarios faces significant challenges due to diverse document formats and modalities. Traditional text-based approaches rely on tailored parsing techniques that disregard layout information and are prone to errors, while recent parsing-free visual methods often struggle to capture fine-grained textual semantics in text-rich scenarios. To address these limitations, we propose \textbf{Unveil}, a novel visual-textual embedding framework that effectively integrates textual and visual features for robust document representation. Through knowledge distillation, we transfer the semantic understanding capabilities from the visual-textual embedding model to a purely visual model, enabling efficient parsing-free retrieval while preserving semantic fidelity. Experimental results demonstrate that our visual-textual embedding method surpasses existing approaches, while knowledge distillation successfully bridges the performance gap between visual-textual and visual-only methods, improving both retrieval accuracy and efficiency. | 2010 | Closing the Loop in Webpage UnderstandingabstractThe two most important tasks in information extraction from the Web are webpage structure understanding and natural language sentences processing. However, little work has been done toward an integrated statistical model for understanding webpage structures and processing natural language sentences within the HTML elements. Our recent work on webpage understanding introduces a joint model of Hierarchical Conditional Random Fields (HCRFs) and extended Semi-Markov Conditional Random Fields (Semi-CRFs) to leverage the page structure understanding results in free text segmentation and labeling. In this top-down integration model, the decision of the HCRF model could guide the decision making of the Semi-CRF model. However, the drawback of the top-down integration strategy is also apparent, i.e., the decision of the Semi-CRF model could not be used by the HCRF model to guide its decision making. This paper proposed a novel framework called WebNLP, which enables bidirectional integration of page structure understanding and text understanding in an iterative manner. We have applied the proposed framework to local business entity extraction and Chinese person and organization name extraction. Experiments show that the WebNLP framework achieved significantly better performance than existing methods. Chunyu Yang 0005, Zaiqing Nie, Jie Zhou 0001, Ji-Rong Wen |

| 2009 | Stock Price Forecasting by Combining News Mining and Time Series AnalysisabstractStock price forecasting has aroused great concern in research of economy, machine learning and other fields. Time series analysis methods are usually utilized to deal with this task. In this paper, we propose to combine news mining and time series analysis to forecast inter-day stock prices. News reports are automatically analyzed with text mining techniques, and then the mining results are used to improve the accuracy of time series analysis algorithms. The experimental result on a half year Chinese stock market data indicates that the proposed algorithm can help to improve the performance of normal time series analysis in stock price forecasting significantly. Moreover, the proposed algorithm also performs well in stock price trend forecasting. Xiangyu Tang, Chunyu Yang 0005, Jie Zhou 0001 |

| 2009 | Reconstructing Orientation Field From Fingerprint Minutiae to Improve Minutiae-Matching AccuracyabstractMinutiae are very important features for fingerprint representation, and most practical fingerprint recognition systems only store the minutiae template in the database for further usage. The conventional methods to utilize minutiae information are treating it as a point set and finding the matched points from different minutiae sets. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm to use minutiae for fingerprint recognition, in which the fingerprint's orientation field is reconstructed from minutiae and further utilized in the matching stage to enhance the system's performance. First, we produce "virtual" minutiae by using interpolation in the sparse area, and then use an orientation model to reconstruct the orientation field from all "real" and "virtual" minutiae. A decision fusion scheme is used to combine the reconstructed orientation field matching with conventional minutiae-based matching. Since orientation field is an important global feature of fingerprints, the proposed method can obtain better results than conventional methods. Experimental results illustrate its effectiveness. | 2008 | Spectral aggregation for clustering ensembleabstractSince a large number of clustering algorithms exist, aggregating different clustered partitions into a single consolidated one to obtain better results has become an important problem. We propose a new algorithm for clustering ensemble based on spectral clustering. We also propose a criteria along with this algorithm, for the detection of cluster numbers. Our algorithm can determine the number of clusters more accurately with less volatility, and therefore can deduce a better combined clustering result. Experimental results on both synthesis and real data-sets show the capability and robustness of our approach. Xi Wang 0009, Chunyu Yang 0005, Jie Zhou 0001 |

| 2006 | Fingerprint Recognition by Combining Global Structure and Local CuesabstractAs an important feature, orientation field describes the global structure of fingerprints. It provides robust discriminatory information other than traditional widely-used minutiae points. However, there are few works explicitly incorporating this information into fingerprint matching stage, partly due to the difficulty of saving the orientation field in the feature template. In this paper, we propose a novel representation for fingerprints which includes both minutiae and model-based orientation field. Then, fingerprint matching can be done by combining the decisions of the matchers based on the global structure (orientation field) and the local cue (minutiae). We have conducted a set of experiments on large-scale databases and made thorough comparisons with the state-of-the-arts. Extensive experimental results show that combining these local and global discriminative information can largely improve the performance. The proposed system is more robust and accurate than conventional minutiae-based methods, and also better than the previous works which implicitly incorporate the orientation information. In this system, the feature template takes less than 420 bytes, and the feature extraction and matching procedures can be done in about 0.30 s. We also show that the global orientation field is beneficial to the alignment of the fingerprints which are either incomplete or poor-qualitied. Jinwei Gu, Jie Zhou 0001, Chunyu Yang 0005 |
