| 2023 | Overfitting NN loop-filters in video codingabstractOverfitting is usually regarded as a negative condition since it impairs the generalisation power of a model. Nevertheless, overfitting a Neural Network (NN) on test data may be advantageous to improve the compression efficiency of image/video coding tools and systems. Previous research has demonstrated the benefits of NN overfitting for post-processing operations, i.e. post-filters, but not yet for actual decoding tools. Generally, the NN is overfitted on test data at the encoder end, and the weight update is coded and sent to the decoder end along the image/video bitstream. The proposed approach follows this strategy. In particular, the overfitting of the Low Operation Point (LOP) loop-filter in NN-based Video Coding (NNVC) software is studied. The overall approach yields Bjøntegaard Delta rate (BD-rate) of -7.74%, -13.73% and -12.49%, for the Y, U and V components, respectively. Out of these coding gains, 1.21%, 6.43% and 5.52%, for the Y, U and V components, are attributed to the overfitting. The boost in the coding gains comes with only 1.5% more complexity, due to the multiplier parameters introduced during the overfitting. | 2016 | Integer Linear Programming-Based Scheduling for Transport Triggered ArchitecturesabstractStatic multi-issue machines, such as traditional Very Long Instructional Word (VLIW) architectures, move complexity from the hardware to the compiler. This is motivated by the ability to support high degrees of instruction-level parallelism without requiring complicated scheduling logic in the processor hardware. The simpler-control hardware results in reduced area and power consumption, but leads to a challenge of engineering a compiler with good code-generation quality. Transport triggered architectures (TTA), and other so-called exposed datapath architectures, take the compiler-oriented philosophy even further by pushing more details of the datapath under software control. The main benefit of this is the reduced register file pressure, with a drawback of adding even more complexity to the compiler side. In this article, we propose an Integer Linear Programming (ILP) -based instruction scheduling model for TTAs. The model describes the architecture characteristics, the particular processor resource constraints, and the operation dependencies of the scheduled program. The model is validated and measured by compiling application kernels to various TTAs with a different number of datapath components and connectivity. In the best case, the cycle count is reduced to 52% when compared to a heuristic scheduler. In addition to producing shorter schedules, the number of register accesses in the compiled programs is generally notably less than those with the heuristic scheduler; in the best case, the ILP scheduler reduced the number of register file reads to 33% of the heuristic results and register file writes to 18%. On the other hand, as expected, the ILP-based scheduler uses distinctly more time to produce a schedule than the heuristic scheduler, but the compilation time is within tolerable limits for production-code generation. | 2009 | A Walk from 2-Norm SVM to 1-Norm SVMabstractThis paper studies how useful the standard 2-norm regularized SVM is in approximating the 1-norm SVM problem. To this end, we examine a general method that is based on iteratively re-weighting the features and solving a 2-norm optimization problem. The convergence rate of this method is unknown. Previous work indicates that it might require an excessive number of iterations. We study how well we can do with just a small number of iterations. In theory the convergence rate is fast, except for coordinates of the current solution that are close to zero. Our empirical experiments confirm this. In many problems with irrelevant features, already one iteration is often enough to produce accuracy as good as or better than that of the 1-norm SVM. Hence, it seems that in these problems we do not need to converge to the 1-norm SVM solution near zero values. The benefit of this approach is that we can build something similar to the 1-norm regularized solver based on any 2-norm regularized solver. This is quick to implement and the solution inherits the good qualities of the solver such as scalability and stability. Jussi Kujala, Timo Aho, Tapio Elomaa |

| 2005 | On look-ahead and pathology in decision tree learningabstractIn decision tree learning, attribute selection is usually based on a greedy local splitting criterion. More extensive search is time consuming and usually does not benefit prediction accuracy as much as one would hope. It has even been claimed that look-ahead would be harmful in decision tree learning. The pathological effects of look-ahead have been studied analytically in the context of game trees. These results and their connection to decision tree learning are considered. A computationally efficient splitting algorithm for numerical domains is presented, which is based on ideas from search tree look-ahead. In empirical tests, the algorithm performs in a promising manner. Tapio Elomaa, Tuomo Malinen |

| 2001 | Preprocessing Opportunities in Optimal Numerical Range PartitioningabstractWe show that only segment borders have to be taken into account as cut point candidates when searching for the optimal multisplit of a numerical value range with respect to convex attribute evaluation functions. Segment borders can be found efficiently in a linear-time preprocessing step. With training set error, which is not strictly convex, the data can be preprocessed into an even smaller number of cut point candidates, called alternations, when striving for the optimal partition. We show that no segment borders (resp. alternations) can be overlooked with strictly convex functions (resp. training set error) without risking the loss of optimality. Our experiments show that while in real-world domains a significant reduction in the number of cut point candidates can be obtained for training set error, the number of segment borders is usually not much lower than that of boundary points. | 2001 | An Analysis of Reduced Error PruningabstractTop-down induction of decision trees has been observed to suffer from the inadequate functioning of the pruning phase. In particular, it is known that the size of the resulting tree grows linearly with the sample size, even though the accuracy of the tree does not improve. Reduced Error Pruning is an algorithm that has been used as a representative technique in attempts to explain the problems of decision tree learning. In this paper we present analyses of Reduced Error Pruning in three different settings. First we study the basic algorithmic properties of the method, properties that hold independent of the input decision tree and pruning examples. Then we examine a situation that intuitively should lead to the subtree under consideration to be replaced by a leaf node, one in which the class label and attribute values of the pruning examples are independent of each other. This analysis is conducted under two different assumptions. The general analysis shows that the pruning probability of a node fitting pure noise is bounded by a function that decreases exponentially as the size of the tree grows. In a specific analysis we assume that the examples are distributed uniformly to the tree. This assumption lets us approximate the number of subtrees that are pruned because they do not receive any pruning examples. This paper clarifies the different variants of the Reduced Error Pruning algorithm, brings new insight to its algorithmic properties, analyses the algorithm with less imposed assumptions than before, and includes the previously overlooked empty subtrees to the analysis. | 1991 | Extending the learnability of decision treesabstractThe author concentrates on B. Natarajan's (1991) framework for learning classes of total functions of discrete domains. A. Ehrenfeucht and D. Haussler (1989) have shown that a subclass of decision trees is learnable in the sense defined by L. Valiant (1984). The author generalizes their definitions to m-ary domains and shows that the learnability of restricted decision tree classifiers carries over to the extended model. > Tapio Elomaa |
