| 2025 | Universal Domain Adaptation in Intelligent Fault Diagnosis via Simulating Unseen ClassesabstractSince the introduction of domain adaptation to fault diagnosis, it has greatly improved the performance of cross-domain fault diagnosis. However, previous methods require constructing independent frameworks for specific domain adaptation scenarios in fault diagnosis, which reduces efficiency and increases consumption. The difficulty lies in the fact that the classes of source and target domains in universal domain adaptation scenarios are not uniform and agnostic, leading to the inability to identify unknown fault modes. To address this issue, we propose a novel Simulating Unseen Classes (SUC) method. It is a general framework that does not depend on a priori knowledge of the classes of target domains. More data with new classes are generated to simulate the unknown fault classes based on source domain at both data and feature levels. Class gap and domain gap between source and target domains are effectively reduced to extract domain invariant features. Adequate experiments are conducted on three benchmark datasets and the results demonstrate that our method can outperform other methods by a large margin. Note to Practitioners—Intelligent fault diagnosis plays an important role in automation system. In practice, the changes in equipment, operating conditions and the environment raise the difficulty of cross-domain fault diagnosis. This paper proposes a novel SUC method for universal domain adaptation in cross-domain fault diagnosis. It is a more general but difficult scenario where the prior of source and target domains is agnostic. More data with new classes is generated effectively based on source domain at both data and feature levels. Class gap and domain gap are reduced to improve the accuracy of fault diagnosis. Our method provides a universal framework that can be readily applied to different domain adaptation (DA) scenarios, including closed set DA, partial DA, open set DA, and universal DA. Experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our method. In the future, we will investigate more challenging issues in fault diagnosis, such as scenarios where the data in the target domain is unavailable during training. | 2018 | Deep r -th Root of Rank Supervised Joint Binary Embedding for Multivariate Time Series RetrievalabstractMultivariate time series data are becoming increasingly common in numerous real world applications, e.g., power plant monitoring, health care, wearable devices, automobile, etc. As a result, multivariate time series retrieval, i.e., given the current multivariate time series segment, how to obtain its relevant time series segments in the historical data (or in the database), attracts significant amount of interest in many fields. Building such a system, however, is challenging since it requires a compact representation of the raw time series which can explicitly encode the temporal dynamics as well as the correlations (interactions) between different pairs of time series (sensors). Furthermore, it requires query efficiency and expects a returned ranking list with high precision on the top. Despite the fact that various approaches have been developed, few of them can jointly resolve these two challenges. To cope with this issue, in this paper we propose a Deep r-th root of Rank Supervised Joint Binary Embedding (Deep r-RSJBE) to perform multivariate time series retrieval. Given a raw multivariate time series segment, we employ Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) units to encode the temporal dynamics and utilize Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to encode the correlations (interactions) between different pairs of time series (sensors). Subsequently, a joint binary embedding is pursued to incorporate both the temporal dynamics and the correlations. Finally, we develop a novel r-th root ranking loss to optimize the precision at the top of a Hamming distance ranking list. Thoroughly empirical studies based upon three publicly available time series datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and the efficiency of Deep r-RSJBE. | 2017 | Polygravity: traffic usage accountability via coarse-grained measurements in multi-tenant data centersabstractNetwork usage accountability is critical in helping operators and customers of multi-tenant data centers deal with concerns such as capacity planning, resource allocation, hotspot detection, link failure detection, and troubleshooting. However, the cost of measurements and instrumentation to achieve flow-level accountability is non-trivial. We propose Polygravity to determine tenant traffic usage via lightweight measurements in multi-tenant data centers. We adopt a tomogravity model widely used in ISP networks, and adapt it to a multi-tenant data center environment. By integrating datacenter-specific domain knowledge, sampling-based partial estimation and gravity-based internal sinks/sources estimation, Polygravity addresses two key challenges for adapting tomogravity to a data center environment: sparse traffic matrices and internal traffic sinks/sources. We conducted extensive evaluation of our approach using realistic data center workloads. Our results show that Polygravity can determine tenant IP flow usage with less than 1% average relative error for tenants with fine-grained domain knowledge. In addition, for tenants with coarse-grained domain knowledge and with partial host-based sampling, Polygravity reduces the relative error of sampling-based estimation by 1/3. | 2013 | Mosaic: quantifying privacy leakage in mobile networksabstractWith the proliferation of online social networking (OSN) and mobile devices, preserving user privacy has become a great challenge. While prior studies have directly focused on OSN services, we call attention to the privacy leakage in mobile network data. This concern is motivated by two factors. First, the prevalence of OSN usage leaves identifiable digital footprints that can be traced back to users in the real-world. Second, the association between users and their mobile devices makes it easier to associate traffic to its owners. These pose a serious threat to user privacy as they enable an adversary to attribute significant portions of data traffic including the ones with NO identity leaks to network users' true identities. To demonstrate its feasibility, we develop the Tessellation methodology. By applying Tessellation on traffic from a cellular service provider (CSP), we show that up to 50% of the traffic can be attributed to the names of users. In addition to revealing the user identity, the reconstructed profile, dubbed as "mosaic," associates personal information such as political views, browsing habits, and favorite apps to the users. We conclude by discussing approaches for preventing and mitigating the alarming leakage of sensitive user information. | 2009 | Inside the bird's nest: measurements of large-scale live VoD from the 2008 olympicsabstractThe 2008 Beijing Olympics was an interesting event from a VoD perspective because it involved near real-time video delivery at massive scales over multiple days of a high-profile event. We present some measurement-driven insights into this event through a unique dataset obtained from ChinaCache, the largest CDN in China. The dataset is unique in three respects. First, it gives a "white-box" view into user access patterns which would otherwise be impossible. Second, since the CDN serves different content providers, it allows to compare and contrast the effects of different presentation models on end users. Third, the nature of the content itself is vastly different from traditional VoD systems in terms of the real-time and event-driven nature, which gives rise to unique effects. The dataset allows us to investigate a wide range of interesting issues: (1) how the live nature of the events causes differences in access patterns compared to traditional VoD and User-Generated Content (UGC) systems, (2) how the presentation models affect user behavior, and (3) flash-crowd phenomena. Based on these observations, we discuss implications for future live VoD systems. Xuening Liu, Ning Xia, Chuang Lin 0002, Hui Zhang 0001, Vyas Sekar, Geyong Min |

| 2008 | Modeling and Simulation of Fruit Setting Patterns of the Peach ShootabstractThe fruit setting patterns (fruit number per node and arrangement within the node) along the individual headed fruit-bearing shoot of 10-year-old peach tree (Prunus persica (L.) Batsch) were studied over two successive years (2005-2006) in Beijing, China. The headed fruit-bearing shoot, which described as a succession of nodes which produced fruit, is modeled by a Markov chain. This model includes the following states (fruit setting types), state 2 represents double fruits on bearer node; state 1 represents single fruit on bearer node; state 0 represents nothing on bearer node. In fruit-bearing shoot, the setting of fruit arrangement follows a constant pattern: fruit production was significantly higher in the mesotonic zone of the shoot and lower in the basal and apical zone. The results indicate that the final pattern of fruit arrangement is a direct result of heading activity. In addition, three-dimensional representations of the fruit setting pattern were reconstructed using AMAPsim software. The visual comparison between 3D reconstructions and photographs generates a natural feedback of the pruning measurements, at the shoot scale. Ning Xia |
