2012 Lightweight automatic face annotation in media pages
abstract
Labeling human faces in images contained in Web media stories enables enriching the user experience offered by media sites. We propose a lightweight framework for automatic image annotation that exploits named entities mentioned in the article to significantly boost the accuracy of face recognition. While previous works in the area labor to train comprehensive offline visual models for a pre-defined universe of candidates, our approach models the people mentioned in a given story on the y, using a standard Web image search engine as an image sampling mechanism. We overcome multiple sources of noise introduced by this ad-hoc process, to build a fast and robust end-to-end system from off-the-shelf error-prone text analysis and machine vision components. In experiments conducted on approximately 900 faces depicted in 500 stories from a major celebrity news website, we were able to correctly label 81.5% of the faces while mislabeling 14.8% of them.

2011 Automatically tagging email by leveraging other users' folders
abstract
Most email applications devote a significant part of their real estate to organization mechanisms such as folders. Yet, we verified on the Yahoo! Mail service that 70% of email users have never defined a single folder. This implies that one of the most well known email features is underexploited. We propose here to revive the feature by providing a method for generating a lighter form of folders, or tags, benefiting even the most passive users. The method automatically associates, whenever possible, an appropriate semantic tag with a given email. This gives rise to an alternate mechanism for organizing and searching email. We advocate a novel modeling approach that exploits the overall population of users, thereby learning from the wisdom-of-crowds how to categorize messages. Given our massive user base, it is enough to learn from a minority of the users who label certain messages in order to label that kind of messages for the general population. We design a novel cascade classification approach, which copes with the severe scalability and accuracy constraints we are facing. Significant efficiency gains are achieved by working within a low dimensional latent space, and by using a novel hierarchical classifier. Precision level is controlled by separating the task into a two-phase classification process.

2011 Nonnegative Matrix Factorization with Earth Mover's Distance Metric for Image Analysis
abstract
Nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) approximates a given data matrix as a product of two low-rank nonnegative matrices, usually by minimizing the L2 or the KL distance between the data matrix and the matrix product. This factorization was shown to be useful for several important computer vision applications. We propose here two new NMF algorithms that minimize the Earth mover's distance (EMD) error between the data and the matrix product. The algorithms (EMD NMF and bilateral EMD NMF) are iterative and based on linear programming methods. We prove their convergence, discuss their numerical difficulties, and propose efficient approximations. Naturally, the matrices obtained with EMD NMF are different from those obtained with L2-NMF. We discuss these differences in the context of two challenging computer vision tasks, texture classification and face recognition, perform actual NMF-based image segmentation for the first time, and demonstrate the advantages of the new methods with common benchmarks.

2008 Unsupervised estimation of segmentation quality using nonnegative factorization
abstract
We propose an unsupervised method for evaluating image segmentation. Common methods are typically based on evaluating smoothness within segments and contrast between them, and the measure they provide is not explicitly related to segmentation errors. The proposed approach differs from these methods on several important points and has several advantages over them. First, it provides a meaningful, quantitative assessment of segmentation quality, in precision/recall terms, which were applicable so far only for supervised evaluation. Second, it builds on a new image model, which characterizes the segments as a mixture of basic feature distributions. The precision/recall estimates are then obtained by a nonnegative matrix factorization (NMF) process. A third important advantage is that the estimates, which are based on intrinsic properties of the specific image being evaluated and not on a comparison to typical images (learning), are relatively robust to context factors such as image quality or the presence of texture. Experimental results demonstrate the accuracy of the precision/recall estimates in comparison to ground truth based on human judgment. Moreover, it is shown that tuning a segmentation algorithm using the unsupervised measure improves the algorithm's quality (as measured by a supervised method).
