| 2015 | Technical Correspondence: "Differential Dependencies: Reasoning and Discovery" RevisitedabstractTo address the frequently occurring situation where data is inexact or imprecise, a number of extensions to the classical notion of a functional dependency (FD) integrity constraint have been proposed in recent years. One of these extensions is the notion of a differential dependency (DD), introduced in the recent article “Differential Dependencies: Reasoning and Discovery” by Song and Chen in the March 2011 edition of this journal. A DD generalises the notion of an FD by requiring only that the values of the attribute from the RHS of the DD satisfy a distance constraint whenever the values of attributes from the LHS of the DD satisfy a distance constraint. In contrast, an FD requires that the values from the attributes in the RHS of an FD be equal whenever the values of the attributes from the LHS of the FD are equal. The article “Differential Dependencies: Reasoning and Discovery” investigated a number of aspects of DDs, the most important of which, since they form the basis for the other topics investigated, were the consistency problem (determining whether there exists a relation instance that satisfies a set of DDs) and the implication problem (determining whether a set of DDs logically implies another DD). Concerning these problems, a number of results were claimed in “Differential Dependencies: Reasoning and Discovery”. In this article we conduct a detailed analysis of the correctness of these results. The outcomes of our analysis are that, for almost every claimed result, we show there are either fundamental errors in the proof or the result is false. For some of the claimed results we are able to provide corrected proofs, but for other results their correctness remains open. Millist W. Vincent, Jixue Liu, Hong-Cheu Liu, Sebastian Link |

| 2005 | Relational computation for mining association rules from XML dataabstractWe develop a fixpoint operator for computing large item sets and demonstrate three query paradigm solutions for association rule mining that use the idea of least fixpoint computation and indicates some optimisation issues. The results of our research provide theoretical foundation for relational computation of association rules and its application on XML mining. Hong-Cheu Liu, John Zeleznikow |

| 1999 | Safe Database Queries with External FunctionsabstractConsiders the theory of database queries with functions in the complex-value data model. The notion of a syntactic criterion, called "embedded allowed", for queries which guarantee embedded domain independence, is generalized for this model. We show that all "embedded allowed" calculus (or fixpoint) queries are external function domain-independent and continuous. We also develop an algorithm for translating "embedded allowed" queries into equivalent algebraic expressions as a basis for evaluating safe queries in all calculus-based query classes. We then compare the expressive power of various complex-value query languages extended with functions and certain restricted versions of them. If we assume polynomial time (space) complexity of external functions and type usage by the database, such as density, then strongly "embedded allowed" inflationary (partial) fixpoint queries precisely express QPTIME (QPSPACE). Finally, we show the relationship between properties such as embedded domain independence, finiteness and "embedded allowed" in various calculus-based query languages. Hong-Cheu Liu, Jeffrey Xu Yu |

| 1994 | Algebraic Equivalences Among Nested Relational ExpressionsabstractAlgebraic optimization is both theoretically and practically important for query processing in (nested) relational databases. In this paper, we consider this issue and investigate some algebraic properties concerning the nested relational operators. We also outline a heuristic optimization algorithm for nested relational expressions by adopting algebraic transformation rules developed in this paper and previous related work.
