Enhancing LLM Question Answering with RAG through Dense Vector Search and Re-RankingabstractRetrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) has emerged as a powerful framework for enhancing Large Language Models (LLMs) by incorporating external knowledge through information retrieval (IR) techniques. However, in question-answering tasks, RAG often retrieves documents that are only semantically similar to the query, which may not provide the most relevant information for generating accurate responses. To address this limitation, we propose an improved retrieval pipeline that combines dense vector search with a re-ranking mechanism to more effectively identify and extract highly relevant knowledge from the retrieved content. We evaluated our approach on two Chinese datasets, TTQA and TMMLU+, using 17 different LLMs. Experimental results show that our method improves performance by up to 21.24% over baseline approaches, particularly on two finance-related subsets, after incorporating domain-specific financial regulations to enhance the knowledge base used in the TMMLU+ dataset. | 2023 | Contextualizing User Perceptions about Biases for Human-Centered Explainable Artificial IntelligenceabstractBiases in Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems or their results are one important issue that demands AI explainability. Despite the prevalence of AI applications, the general public are not necessarily equipped with the ability to understand how the black-box algorithms work and how to deal with biases. To inform designs for explainable AI (XAI), we conducted in-depth interviews with major stakeholders, both end-users (n = 24) and engineers (n = 15), to investigate how they made sense of AI applications and the associated biases according to situations of high and low stakes. We discussed users’ perceptions and attributions about AI biases and their desired levels and types of explainability. We found that personal relevance and boundaries as well as the level of stake are two major dimensions for developing user trust especially during biased situations and informing XAI designs. | 2020 | Development and Validation of a Corpus for Machine Humor ComprehensionabstractThis work developed a Chinese humor corpus containing 3,365 jokes collected from over 40 sources. Each joke was labeled with five levels of funniness, eight skill sets of humor, and six dimensions of intent by only one annotator. To validate the manual labels, we trained SVM (Support Vector Machine) and BERT (Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers) with half of the corpus (labeled by one annotator) to predict the skill and intent labels of the other half (labeled by the other annotator). Based on two assumptions that a valid manually labeled corpus should follow, our results showed the validity for the skill and intent labels. As to the funniness label, the validation results showed that the correlation between the corpus label and user feedback rating is marginal, which implies that the funniness level is a harder annotation problem to be solved. The contribution of this work is two folds: 1) a Chinese humor corpus is developed with labels of humor skills, intents, and funniness, which allows machines to learn more intricate humor framing, effect, and amusing level to predict and respond in proper context (https://github.com/SamTseng/Chinese_Humor_MultiLabeled). 2) An approach to verify whether a minimum human labeled corpus is valid or not, which facilitates the validation of low-resource corpora. | 2015 | Mining browsing behaviors for objectionable content filteringabstractThis article explores users' browsing intents to predict the category of a user's next access during web surfing and applies the results to filter objectionable content, such as pornography, gambling, violence, and drugs. Users' access trails in terms of category sequences in click‐through data are employed to mine users' web browsing behaviors. Contextual relationships of URL categories are learned by the hidden Markov model. The top‐level domains (TLDs) extracted from URLs themselves and the corresponding categories are caught by the TLD model. Given a URL to be predicted, its TLD and current context are empirically combined in an aggregation model. In addition to the uses of the current context, the predictions of the URL accessed previously in different contexts by various users are also considered by majority rule to improve the aggregation model. Large‐scale experiments show that the advanced aggregation approach achieves promising performance while maintaining an acceptably low false positive rate. Different strategies are introduced to integrate the model with the blacklist it generates for filtering objectionable web pages without analyzing their content. In practice, this is complementary to the existing content analysis from users' behavioral perspectives. Lung-Hao Lee, Yen-Cheng Juan, Wei-Lin Tseng, Hsin-Hsi Chen, Yuen-Hsien Tseng

POSTER: Proactive Blacklist Update for Anti-PhishingabstractThis study explores the existing blacklists to discover suspected URLs that refer to on-the-fly phishing threats in real time. We propose a PhishTrack framework that includes redirection tracking and form tracking components to update the phishing blacklists. It actively finds phishing URLs as early as possible. Experimental results show that our proactive phishing update method is an effective and efficient approach for improving the coverage of the blacklists. In practice, our solution is complementary to the existing anti-phishing techniques for providing secured web surfing. Lung-Hao Lee, Kuei-Ching Lee, Hsin-Hsi Chen, Yuen-Hsien Tseng

Objectionable content filtering by click-through dataabstractThis paper explores users' browsing intents to predict the category of a user's next access during web surfing, and applies the results to objectionable content filtering. A user's access trail represented as a sequence of URLs reveals the contextual information of web browsing behaviors. We extract behavioral features of each clicked URL, i.e., hostname, bag-of-words, gTLD, IP, and port, to develop a linear chain CRF model for context-aware category prediction. Large-scale experiments show that our method achieves a promising accuracy of 0.9396 for objectionable access identification without requesting their corresponding page content. Error analysis indicates that our proposed model results in a low false positive rate of 0.0571. In real-life filtering simulations, our proposed model accomplishes macro-averaging blocking rate 0.9271, while maintaining a favorably low macro-averaging over-blocking rate 0.0575 for collaboratively filtering objectionable content with time change on the dynamic web. | 2012 | Context-aware web security threat preventionabstractThis paper studies the feasibility of an early warning system that prevents users from the dangerous situations they may fall into during web surfing. Our approach adopts behavioral Hidden Markov Models to explore collective intelligence embedded in users' browsing behaviors for context-aware category prediction, and applies the results to web security threat prevention. Large-scale experiments show that our proposed method performs accuracy 0.463 for predicting the fine-grained categories of users' next accesses. In real-life filtering simulations, our method can achieve macro-averaging blocking rate 0.4293 to find web security threats that cannot be detected by the existing security protection solutions at the early stage, while accomplishes a low macro-averaging over-blocking rate 0.0005 with the passage of time. In addition, behavioral HMM is able to alert users for avoiding security threats by 8.4 hours earlier than the current URL filtering engine does. Our simulations show that the shortening of this lag time is critical to avoid severe diffusions of security threats. | 2005 | A news content summarizer for Chinese cell phonesabstractThis paper proposes a Chinese news summarization method for the message services of news brief over cell phones. In this method, important sentences were first identified based on the news content. They were matched against the news title to determine a suitable position for combining with the title to become candidates. These candidates were then ranked by their length and fitness for manual selection. In our evaluation, among 40 news stories, over 62.5% of them have their top-ranked candidates be judged good in quality. If all candidates were considered, over 75% of them yield acceptable summaries without manual editing. Since these summaries were concatenated snippets from the news texts, they can be easily integrated and synchronized with other streamed media such as speech or video from the same story. | 2002 | Automatic thesaurus generation for Chinese documentsabstractAbstract This article reports an approach to automatic thesaurus construction for Chinese documents. An effective Chinese keyword extraction algorithm is first presented. Experiments showed that for each document an average of 33% keywords unknown to a lexicon of 123,226 terms could be identified by this algorithm. Of these unregistered words, only 8.3% of them are illegal. Keywords extracted from each document are further filtered for term association analysis. Association weights larger than a threshold are then accumulated over all the documents to yield the final term pair similarities. Compared to previous studies, this method speeds up the thesaurus generation process drastically. It also achieves a similar percentage level of term relatedness. Yuen-Hsien Tseng

Fast co-occurrence thesaurus construction for Chinese newsabstractThis paper reports an approach to automatic thesaurus construction for Chinese news articles. An effective Chinese word segmentation and keyword extraction algorithm is first presented. For each document, an average of 33% keywords unknown to a lexicon of 123,226 terms can be identified. The extraction error rate is 3.6%. Keywords extracted from each document are then further filtered for term association analysis by a modified Dice coefficient formula. Association weights larger than a threshold are then accumulated over all the documents to yield the final term pair similarities. Compared to previous studies, this method not only speeds up the thesaurus generation process drastically, but also achieves a similar percentage level of term relatedness. Yuen-Hsien Tseng

Automatic cataloguing and searching for retrospective data by use of OCR textabstractThis article describes our efforts in supporting information retrieval from OCR degraded text. In particular, we report our approach to an automatic cataloging and searching contest for books in multiple languages. In this contest, 500 books in English, German, French, and Italian published during the 1770s to 1970s are scanned into images and OCRed to digital text. The goal is to use only automatic ways to extract information for sophisticated searching. We adopted the vector space retrieval model, an n-gram indexing method, and a special weighting scheme to tackle this problem. Although the performance by this approach is slightly inferior to the best approach, which is mainly based on regular expression match, one advantage of our approach is that it is less language dependent and less layout sensitive, thus is readily applicable to other languages and document collections. Problems of OCR text retrieval for some Asian languages are also discussed in this article, and solutions are suggested. Yuen-Hsien Tseng

| 1999 | Content-Based Retrieval for Music CollectionsabstractA content-based retrieval model for tackling the mismatch problems specific to music data is proposed and implemented. The system uses a pitch profile encoding for queries in any key and an n-note indexing method for approximate matching in sub-linear time.A distinct function that extracts key melodies for query suggestion is developed. The Web-based system provides flexible user interface for query formulation and result browsing.Users can search the system by a short sequence of notes, by uploading a file created by singing, or by clicking suggested key melodies without input.Experiments show that the pitch profile encoding and a 3-note indexing are able to overcome the key mismatch problem and the random errors caused by pitch error, note deletion and insertion. The use of extracted key melodies improves performance over direct search of the music database. For the type of burst mismatch, a query expansion approach is applied.
