| 2022 | Coherent Optical Transceivers Scaling and Integration ChallengesabstractThe advancement of digital coherent technologies has dramatically increased the system capacity per single-core single-mode fiber to the point that we can now approach the Shannon limit by utilizing high-order modulation formats and high-coding gain forward error correction (FEC) codes. Because the required energy per bit increases exponentially the closer we get to the Shannon limit, extending the available optical bandwidth by using ultrawideband wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) and/or spatial-division multiplexing (SDM) is indispensable for increasing the system capacity with high energy efficiency. However, simple extensions of wavelength resources and spatial parallelization dramatically increase the number of transceivers (TxRxs) in proportion to the wavelength/spatial multiplicity. The key to achieving cost- and energy-efficient systems is to reduce the system complexity by using high-density integration and broadband optelectronics. In this article, we overview and discuss the recent advances of coherent optical transceivers integrated with an optical front end and digital signal processing (DSP)/application-specific integrated circuit (ASIC). We then present the transponder architectures and the challenges involved in applying them for massive parallelized transmission systems. | 2016 | Efficient accommodation of mobile fronthaul and secondary services in a TDM-PON system with wireless TDD frame monitorabstractWe propose a novel technique for the accommodation of mobile base stations (BSs) and a secondary system with a time division duplex (TDD) frame monitor. By increasing the number of BSs accommodated in a passive optical network (PON), the cost of mobile fronthaul (MFH) can be reduced. To realize even further cost reduction, a secondary system is accommodated in the PON with the MFH while the mobile signal is transferred with low latency. We propose a technique for overlapping the signal of the secondary system on the signals of the TDD mobile BSs by using a function for distinguishing the unallocated interval of TDD uplink signals. We evaluate the improvement in the optical uplink bandwidth efficiency with a numerical calculation. By employing the proposed technique, in a numerical simulation we greatly increase the optical bandwidth of the secondary system compared with that without a TDD frame monitor. For the uplink of the mobile system, the MFH latency is kept at a low value regardless of TDD frame monitoring. | 2016 | Passive optical network range applicable to cost-effective mobile fronthaulabstractIn 5th generation mobile communications systems (5G), the number of small cells with centralized-radio access network (C-RAN) architecture is expected to increase greatly. Time division multiplexing-passive optical networks (TDM-PON) are promising transmission systems for networks between a baseband unit (BBU) and a remote radio head (RRH). However, there is a challenge as regards the ultra-low latency requirements of 5G including less than 1 ms for end-to-end communication, because a TDM-PON generally transmits using time division multiple access (TDMA) as a basis. In this paper, we derive the achievable latency and the number of RRHs accommodable by TDM-PON, and analyze the applicable range of a TDM-PON for mobile use. Our analysis shows that it is possible to design a PON application in accordance with the latency requirements of mobile systems. | 2015 | Optical DP-high order-QAM transmission system for high-speed short links utilizing copropagating twin local lightsabstractA novel optical high order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) transmission system for high-speed short links is described. Dual-polarization (DP) QAM and twin local lights are generated from one light source in the system, and these lightwaves are simultaneously transmitted via standard single mode fiber. The receiver can be constructed simply because it does not require a coherent light source under wavelength control. The system enables a 3.1 Gbaud DP-16-QAM signal to be successfully demodulated after 80-km transmission without using an optical dispersion compensator. It also achieves high tolerance against phase noise in the signal light source. Hiroto Kawakami, Yutaka Miyamoto, Takayuki Kobayashi |
