2021 Clustering for Private Interest-based Advertising
abstract
We study the problem of designing privacy-enhanced solutions for interest-based advertisement (IBA). IBA is a key component of the online ads ecosystem and provides a better ad experience to users. Indeed, IBA enables advertisers to show users impressions that are relevant to them. Nevertheless, the current way ad tech companies achieve this is by building detailed interest profiles for individual users. In this work we ask whether such fine grained personalization is required, and present mechanisms that achieve competitive performance while giving privacy guarantees to the end users. More precisely we present the first detailed exploration of how to implement Chrome's Federated Learning of Cohorts (FLoC) API. We define the privacy properties required for the API and evaluate multiple hashing and clustering algorithms discussing the trade-offs between utility, privacy, and ease of implementation.

2008 Video suggestion and discovery for youtube: taking random walks through the view graph
abstract
The rapid growth of the number of videos in YouTube provides enormous potential for users to find content of interest to them. Unfortunately, given the difficulty of searching videos, the size of the video repository also makes the discovery of new content a daunting task. In this paper, we present a novel method based upon the analysis of the entire user-video graph to provide personalized video suggestions for users. The resulting algorithm, termed Adsorption, provides a simple method to efficiently propagate preference information through a variety of graphs. We extensively test the results of the recommendations on a three month snapshot of live data from YouTube.

2005 Randomized Algorithms and NLP: Using Locality Sensitive Hash Functions for High Speed Noun Clustering
abstract
In this paper, we explore the power of randomized algorithm to address the challenge of working with very large amounts of data. We apply these algorithms to generate noun similarity lists from 70 million pages. We reduce the running time from quadratic to practically linear in the number of elements to be computed.

2002 Learning surface text patterns for a Question Answering System
abstract
In this paper we explore the power of surface text patterns for open-domain question answering systems. In order to obtain an optimal set of patterns, we have developed a method for learning such patterns automatically. A tagged corpus is built from the Internet in a bootstrapping process by providing a few hand-crafted examples of each question type to Altavista. Patterns are then automatically extracted from the returned documents and standardized. We calculate the precision of each pattern, and the average precision for each question type. These patterns are then applied to find answers to new questions. Using the TREC-10 question set, we report results for two cases: answers determined from the TREC-10 corpus and from the web.
