| 2025 | Zero-Shot Monocular Scene Flow Estimation in the WildabstractLarge models have shown generalization across datasets for many low-level vision tasks, like depth estimation, but no such general models exist for scene flow. Even though scene flow prediction has wide potential, its practical use is limited because of the lack of generalization of current predictive models. We identify three key challenges and propose solutions for each. First, we create a method that jointly estimates geometry and motion for accurate prediction. Second, we alleviate scene flow data scarcity with a data recipe that affords us 1M annotated training samples across diverse synthetic scenes. Third, we evaluate different parameterizations for scene flow prediction and adopt a natural and effective parameterization. Our model outperforms existing methods as well as baselines built on large-scale models in terms of 3D end-point error, and shows zero-shot generalization to the casually captured videos from DAVIS and the robotic manipulation scenes from RoboTAP. Overall, our approach makes scene flow prediction more practical in-the-wild.Website: https://research.nvidia.com/labs/lpr/zeromsf/ Yiqing Liang, Abhishek Badki, Hang Su 0005, James Tompkin 0001, Orazio Gallo |

| 2025 | GauFRe: Gaussian Deformation Fields for Real-Time Dynamic Novel View SynthesisabstractWe propose a method that achieves state-of-the-art rendering quality and efficiency on monocular dynamic scene reconstruction using deformable 3D Gaussians. Implicit deformable representations commonly model motion with a canonical space and time-dependent backward-warping deformation field. Our method, GauFRe, uses a forward-warping deformation to explicitly model non-rigid transformations of scene geometry. Specifically, we propose a template set of 3D Gaussians residing in a canonical space, and a time-dependent forward-warping deformation field to model dynamic objects. Additionally, we tailor a 3D Gaussian-specific static component supported by an inductive bias-aware initialization approach which allows the deformation field to focus on moving scene regions, improving the rendering of complex real-world motion. The differentiable pipeline is optimized end-to-end with a self-supervised rendering loss. Experiments show our method achieves competitive results and higher efficiency than both previous state-of-the-art NeRF and Gaussian-based methods. For real-world scenes, GauFRe can train in ≈20 mins and offer 96 FPS real-time rendering on an RTX 3090 GPU. | 2023 | Semantic Attention Flow Fields for Monocular Dynamic Scene DecompositionabstractFrom video, we reconstruct a neural volume that captures time-varying color, density, scene flow, semantics, and attention information. The semantics and attention let us identify salient foreground objects separately from the background across spacetime. To mitigate low resolution semantic and attention features, we compute pyramids that trade detail with whole-image context. After optimization, we perform a saliency-aware clustering to decompose the scene. To evaluate real-world scenes, we annotate object masks in the NVIDIA Dynamic Scene and DyCheck datasets. We demonstrate that this method can decompose dynamic scenes in an unsupervised way with competitive performance to a supervised method, and that it improves foreground/background segmentation over recent static/dynamic split methods. | 2022 | SGEITL: Scene Graph Enhanced Image-Text Learning for Visual Commonsense ReasoningabstractAnswering complex questions about images is an ambitious goal for machine intelligence, which requires a joint understanding of images, text, and commonsense knowledge, as well as a strong reasoning ability. Recently, multimodal Transformers have made a great progress in the task of Visual Commonsense Reasoning (VCR), by jointly understanding visual objects and text tokens through layers of cross-modality attention. However, these approaches do not utilize the rich structure of the scene and the interactions between objects which are essential in answering complex commonsense questions. We propose a Scene Graph Enhanced Image-Text Learning (SGEITL) framework to incorporate visual scene graph in commonsense reasoning. In order to exploit the scene graph structure, at the model structure level, we propose a multihop graph transformer for regularizing attention interaction among hops. As for pre-training, a scene-graph-aware pre-training method is proposed to leverage structure knowledge extracted in visual scene graph. Moreover, we introduce a method to train and generate domain relevant visual scene graph using textual annotations in a weakly-supervised manner. Extensive experiments on VCR and other tasks show significant performance boost compared with the state-of-the-art methods, and prove the efficacy of each proposed component. | 2021 | SSCNav: Confidence-Aware Semantic Scene Completion for Visual Semantic NavigationabstractThis paper focuses on visual semantic navigation, the task of producing actions for an active agent to navigate to a specified target object category in an unknown environment. To complete this task, the algorithm should simultaneously locate and navigate to an instance of the category. In comparison to the traditional point goal navigation, this task requires the agent to have a stronger contextual prior to indoor environments. We introduce SSCNav, an algorithm that explicitly models scene priors using a confidence-aware semantic scene completion module to complete the scene and guide the agent's navigation planning. Given a partial observation of the environment, SSC-Nav first infers a complete scene representation with semantic labels for the unobserved scene together with a confidence map associated with its own prediction. Then, a policy network infers the action from the scene completion result and confidence map. Our experiments demonstrate that the proposed scene completion module improves the efficiency of the downstream navigation policies. | 2016 | Automatic Handwriting Feature Extraction, Analysis and Visualization in the Context of Digital PalaeographyabstractDigital palaeography is an emerging research area which aims to introduce digital image processing techniques into palaeographic analysis for the purpose of providing objective quantitative measurements. This paper explores the use of a fully automated handwriting feature extraction, visualization, and analysis system for digital palaeography which bridges the gap between traditional and digital palaeography in terms of the deployment of feature extraction techniques and handwriting metrics. We propose the application of a set of features, more closely related to conventional palaeographic assesment metrics than those commonly adopted in automatic writer identification. These features are emprically tested on two datasets in order to assess their effectiveness for automatic writer identification and aid attribution of individual handwriting characteristics in historical manuscripts. Finally, we introduce tools to support visualization of the extracted features in a comparative way, showing how they can best be exploited in the implementation of a content-based image retrieval (CBIR) system for digital archiving. | 2014 | Device status information service architecture for condition monitoring using OPC UAabstractCondition monitoring and maintenance of devices and equipment is an important aspect of operating a production facility affecting the availability of production systems. Modern production environments can consist of thousands of devices that each need to be monitored so that maintenance can be performed when necessary to sustain a cost-effective state of production. Today operation and maintenance (O&M) is typically outsourced, and equipment and device manufacturers have also entered the service business. This brings challenges in managing a multitude of different devices using different protocols as well as in the varying needs for utilizing this information in enterprise functions and services. Based on OPC Unified Architecture (UA) a scalable architecture is developed for providing device status information of heterogeneous field devices and sensors to enterprise level applications and services. A proof of concept implementation of this architecture is presented and its envisioned adoption in a mine environment is discussed. | 2012 | DocExplore: overcoming cultural and physical barriers to access ancient documentsabstractIn this paper, we describe DocExplore, an integrated software suite centered on the handling of digitized documents with an emphasis on ancient manuscripts. This software suite allows the augmentation and exploration of ancient documents of cultural interest. Specialists can add textual and multimedia data and metadata to digitized documents through a graphical interface that does not require technical knowledge. They are helped in this endeavor by sophisticated document analysis tools that allows for instance to spot words or patterns in images of documents. The suite is intended to ease considerably the process of bringing locked away historical materials to the attention of the general public by covering all the steps from managing a digital collection to creating interactive presentations suited for cultural exhibitions. Its genesis and sustained development reside in a collaboration of archivists, historians and computer scientists, the latter being not only in charge of the development of the software, but also of creating and incorporating novel pattern recognition for document analysis techniques. | 2012 | Implementing Word Retrieval in Handwritten Documents Using a Small DatasetabstractA novel approach to the problem of keyword retrieval in cursive handwritten documents is introduced in this work. Two issues are addressed: small dataset size and uneven sample distribution across the character set. The proposed strategies utilise graphemes (fragments of a handwritten word) to implement a recognition model which is subsequently used to form the feature model for the query word.
