2025 RL4CO: An Extensive Reinforcement Learning for Combinatorial Optimization Benchmark
abstract
Combinatorial optimization (CO) is fundamental to several realworld applications, from logistics and scheduling to hardware design and resource allocation.Deep reinforcement learning (RL) has recently shown significant benefits in solving CO problems, reducing reliance on domain expertise and improving computational efficiency. However, the absence of a unified benchmarking framework leads to inconsistent evaluations, limits reproducibility, and increases engineering overhead, raising barriers to adoption for new researchers. To address these challenges, we introduce RL4CO, a unified and extensive benchmark with in-depth library coverage of 27 CO problem environments and 23 state-of-the-art baselines.Built on efficient software libraries and best practices in implementation, RL4CO features modularized implementation and flexible configurations of diverse environments, policy architectures, RL algorithms, and utilities with extensive documentation.RL4CO helps researchers build on existing successes while exploring and developing their own designs, facilitating the entire research process by decoupling science from heavy engineering. We finally provide extensive benchmark studies to inspire new insights and future work.RL4CO has already attracted numerous researchers in the community and is open-sourced at https://github.com/ai4co/rl4co 1 .

2023 DevFormer: A Symmetric Transformer for Context-Aware Device Placement
abstract
In this paper, we present DevFormer, a novel transformer-based architecture for addressing the complex and computationally demanding problem of hardware design optimization. Despite the demonstrated efficacy of transformers in domains including natural language processing and computer vision, their use in hardware design has been limited by the scarcity of offline data. Our approach addresses this limitation by introducing strong inductive biases such as relative positional embeddings and action-permutation symmetricity that effectively capture the hardware context and enable efficient design optimization with limited offline data. We apply DevFormer to the problem of decoupling capacitor placement and show that it outperforms state-of-the-art methods in both simulated and real hardware, leading to improved performances while reducing the number of components by more than 30%. Finally, we show that our approach achieves promising results in other offline contextual learning-based combinatorial optimization tasks.

2021 Learning Collaborative Policies to Solve NP-hard Routing Problems
abstract
Recently, deep reinforcement learning (DRL) frameworks have shown potential for solving NP-hard routing problems such as the traveling salesman problem (TSP) without problem-specific expert knowledge. Although DRL can be used to solve complex problems, DRL frameworks still struggle to compete with state-of-the-art heuristics showing a substantial performance gap. This paper proposes a novel hierarchical problem-solving strategy, termed learning collaborative policies (LCP), which can effectively find the near-optimum solution using two iterative DRL policies: the seeder and reviser. The seeder generates as diversified candidate solutions as possible (seeds) while being dedicated to exploring over the full combinatorial action space (i.e., sequence of assignment action). To this end, we train the seeder's policy using a simple yet effective entropy regularization reward to encourage the seeder to find diverse solutions. On the other hand, the reviser modifies each candidate solution generated by the seeder; it partitions the full trajectory into sub-tours and simultaneously revises each sub-tour to minimize its traveling distance. Thus, the reviser is trained to improve the candidate solution's quality, focusing on the reduced solution space (which is beneficial for exploitation). Extensive experiments demonstrate that the proposed two-policies collaboration scheme improves over single-policy DRL framework on various NP-hard routing problems, including TSP, prize collecting TSP (PCTSP), and capacitated vehicle routing problem (CVRP).

2017 Application of Machine Learning for Optimization of 3-D Integrated Circuits and Systems
abstract
The 3-D integration helps improve performance and density of electronic systems. However, since electrical and thermal performance for 3-D integration is related to each other, their codesign is required. Machine learning, a promising approach in artificial intelligence, has recently shown promise for addressing engineering optimization problems. In this paper, we apply machine learning for the optimization of 3-D integrated systems where the electrical performance and thermal performance need to be analyzed together for maximizing performance. In such systems, modeling can be challenging due to the multiscale geometries involved, which increases computation time per iteration. In this paper, we show that machine learning can be applied to such systems where multiple parameters can be optimized to achieve the desired performance using the minimum number of iterations. These results have been compared with other promising optimization methods in this paper. The results show that on an average, 4.4%, 31.1%, and 6.9% improvement in temperature gradient, CPU time, and skew are possible using machine learning, as compared with other methods.

2015 Design and Analysis of 3D-MAPS (3D Massively Parallel Processor with Stacked Memory)
abstract
This paper describes the architecture, design, analysis, and simulation and measurement results of the 3D-MAPS (3D massively parallel processor with stacked memory) chip built with a 1.5 V, 130 nm process technology and a two-tier 3D stacking technology using 1.2$\micro\hbox{m}$-diameter, 6$\micro \hbox{m}$-height through-silicon vias (TSVs) and$3.4\nbsp\micro\hbox{m}$-diameter face-to-face bond pads. 3D-MAPS consists of a core tier containing 64 cores and a memory tier containing 64 memory blocks. Each core communicates with its dedicated 4KB SRAM block using face-to-face bond pads, which provide negligible data transfer delay between the core and the memory tiers. The maximum operating frequency is 277 MHz and the maximum memory bandwidth is 70.9 GB/s at 277 MHz. The peak measured memory bandwidth usage is 63.8 GB/s and the peak measured power is approximately 4 W based on eight parallel benchmarks.

2013 Coil Design and Shielding Methods for a Magnetic Resonant Wireless Power Transfer System
abstract
In this paper, we introduce the basic principles of wireless power transfer using magnetic field resonance and describe techniques for the design of a resonant magnetic coil, the formation of a magnetic field distribution, and electromagnetic field (EMF) noise suppression methods. The experimental results of wireless power transfer systems in consumer electronics applications are discussed in terms of issues related to their efficiency and EMF noise. Furthermore, we present a passive shielding method and a magnetic field cancellation method using a reactive resonant current loop and the utilization of these methods in an online electric vehicle (OLEV) system, in which an OLEV green transportation bus system absorbs wireless power from power cables underneath the road surface with only a minimal battery capacity.

2011 Full-chip TSV-to-TSV coupling analysis and optimization in 3D IC
abstract
This paper studies TSV-to-TSV coupling in 3D ICs. A full-chip SI analysis flow is proposed based on the proposed coupling model. Analysis results show that TSVs cause significant coupling noise and timing problems despite that TSV count is much smaller compared with the gate count. Two approaches are proposed to alleviate TSV-to-TSV coupling, namely TSV shielding and buffer insertion. Analysis results show that both approaches are effective in reducing the TSV-caused-coupling and improving timing.

2008 A Delay Line Circuit Design for Crosstalk Minimization Using Genetic Algorithm
abstract
Most signals between chips or packages in an electric circuit board require certain delays in order to achieve good timing. An extension of the circuit line that is proportional to the designated time delay has been a usual practice due to cost effectiveness. However, the layout of the line becomes dense due to the small size of packages or circuit boards, and this generates crosstalk, causing signal detection errors. In this paper, a design methodology of delay line layout for crosstalk minimization is developed using the genetic algorithm (GA). The GA requires a large number of function evaluations, and efficient calculation of crosstalk is proposed together with a new technique of generating random line, making offsprings, and mutation. Different optimum results have been obtained for different objectives and compared. Some of the designs were actually manufactured and experimentally tested, showing the validity of the optimum results.
