| 2011 | Campus++: A publish-subscribe architecture for intermittently connected 802.15.4 networksabstractThe aim of this extended abstract is to present Campus++, a location-based publish-subscribe system for intermittently connected delay tolerant networks, exploiting IEEE 802.15.4 devices, and taking into due account the severe constraints deriving from their physical characteristics. We describe our proposed architectural model and how we implemented our solution in a real test-bed. We point out that our system can be easily adapted to operate in a fully distributed, infrastructure-less way, allowing free communications e.g. in disaster areas or in areas in which ”usual” communications means are either non existent or intentionally made unavailable. | 2007 | Modeling and simulation alternatives for the design of networked embedded systemsabstractThis paper addresses the problem of modeling and simulating large set of heterogeneous networked embedded systems which cooperate to build cost-efficient, reliable, secure and scalable applications. The purpose of this task is an application-driven top-down design flow which starts from application requirements and then progressively decides the general architecture of the system and the type and structure of its HW, SW and network components. In the past, a considerable research effort has been done to create specific tools for each design domain - software, hardware and network - and to integrate them for data exchange between models and their joint simulation. However the advantages and drawbacks of different combinations of tools in the various stages of the design flow have not been discussed. The paper describes and discusses how to combine different modeling tools to provide different modeling and simulation alternatives for the design of networked embedded systems devoted to complex distributed applications. The problem is faced both theoretically and practically with a real application derived from a European project Elisa Alessio, Franco Fummi, Davide Quaglia, Maura Turolla |

| 2005 | Embedded SW Design Issues for Distributed Applications on Mobile TerminalsabstractMobile terminals are embedded systems with growing elaboration capacity, even still limited, which are continuously connected to a worldwide communication network. Thus, the idea of embedding in mobile terminals remote computing services seems attractive and it is more and more exploited. This paper evaluates a middleware platform based on the simple object access protocol (SOAP) to develop distributed applications on mobile terminals. | 2004 | Heterogeneous Co-Simulation of Networked Embedded SystemsabstractNetworked embedded systems pose several challenges in the modeling, simulation, and design domains. The presence of the network, in particular, makes an already critical task such as HW/SW co-simulation even more complex, since a three-way (HW/SW/network) co-simulation and co-design capability is required. Modeling of networks and their interaction with hardware and software is thus key for an effective design methodology at early stages of the design flow. In this work, we present a HW/SW/network co-simulation and co-design methodology, based on the integration of heterogeneous simulation environments such as systemC and NS (network simulator). This methodology has been successfully applied to the design of a system-on-chip performing the fast path of IPv4 routing, allowing to explore different HW/SW allocation for different network configurations.
