| 2019 | The State of the Art in Visual Analysis Approaches for Ocean and Atmospheric DatasetsabstractAbstract The analysis of ocean and atmospheric datasets offers a unique set of challenges to scientists working in different application areas. These challenges include dealing with extremely large volumes of multidimensional data, supporting interactive visual analysis, ensembles exploration and visualization, exploring model sensitivities to inputs, mesoscale ocean features analysis, predictive analytics, heterogeneity and complexity of observational data, representing uncertainty, and many more. Researchers across disciplines collaborate to address such challenges, which led to significant research and development advances in ocean and atmospheric sciences, and also in several relevant areas such as visualization and visual analytics, big data analytics, machine learning and statistics. In this report, we perform an extensive survey of research advances in the visual analysis of ocean and atmospheric datasets. First, we survey the task requirements by conducting interviews with researchers, domain experts, and end users working with these datasets on a spectrum of analytics problems in the domain of ocean and atmospheric sciences. We then discuss existing models and frameworks related to data analysis, sense‐making, and knowledge discovery for visual analytics applications. We categorize the techniques, systems, and tools presented in the literature based on the taxonomies of task requirements, interaction methods, visualization techniques, machine learning and statistical methods, evaluation methods, data types, data dimensions and size, spatial scale and application areas. We then evaluate the task requirements identified based on our interviews with domain experts in the context of categorized research based on our taxonomies, and existing models and frameworks of visual analytics to determine the extent to which they fulfill these task requirements, and identify the gaps in current research. In the last part of this report, we summarize the trends, challenges, and opportunities for future research in this area. | 2015 | A spatio-temporal multimedia big data framework for a large crowdabstractCrowdsourced multimedia data poses several challenges when it is collected, stored, indexed, retrieved, and visualized. Examples of crowd source multimedia data are social sensors, vehicle sensors, physical sensors, human sensors, etc. Analyzing such multimodal and diversified crowdsourced data provides very rich understanding about the need of individuals within a crowd. Such understanding makes it possible to tailor services to individuals' needs, also called context-aware services. In this paper, we propose a spatial multimedia big data framework that can collect multimedia data from 1) a very large crowd equipped with multi-sensory smartphones, 2) vehicles, and 3) social networks. A set of multimedia services are offered to users to support their spatio-temporal activities. These include but not limited to 1) simple user interfaces to utilize multimedia services for instant guidance, 2) navigation to points of interests (POI), and 3) efficient and cost effective intra-city rides to users. The big data framework is designed to handle a very large number of multimedia spatio-temporal queries in real-time. The system is a pilot project and will be deployed during the event of Hajj 2015 when over three million pilgrims from all over the world will visit Makkah, Saudi Arabia to perform their Hajj rituals. | 2015 | Demonstration of Taghreed: A system for querying, analyzing, and visualizing geotagged microblogsabstractThis paper demonstrates Taghreed; a full-fledged system for efficient and scalable querying, analyzing, and visualizing geotagged microblogs, such as tweets. Taghreed supports a wide variety of queries on all microblogs attributes. In addition, it is able to manage a large number (billions) of microblogs for relatively long periods, e.g., months. Taghreed consists of four main components: (1) indexer, (2) query engine, (3) recovery manager, and (4) visualizer. Taghreed indexer efficiently digests incoming microblogs with high arrival rates in light main-memory indexes. When the memory becomes full, the memory contents are flushed to disk indexes which are managing billions of microblogs efficiently. On memory failure, the recovery manager restores the memory contents from backup copies. Taghreed query engine consists of two modules: a query optimizer and a query processor. The query optimizer generates an optimized query plan to be executed by the query processor to provide low query responses. Taghreed visualizer features to its users a wide variety of spatiotemporal queries and presents the answers on a map-based user interface that allows an interactive exploration. Taghreed is the first system that addresses all these challenges collectively for geotagged microblogs data. The system is demonstrated based on real system implementation through different scenarios that show system functionality and internals. | 2015 | A demonstration of Shahed: A MapReduce-based system for querying and visualizing satellite dataabstractSeveral space agencies such as NASA are continuously collecting datasets of earth dynamics-e.g., temperature, vegetation, and cloud coverage-through satellites. This data is stored in a publicly available archive for scientists and researchers and is very useful for studying climate, desertification, and land use change. The benefit of this data comes from its richness as it provides an archived history for over 15 years of satellite observations. Unfortunately, the use of such data is very limited due to the huge size of archives (> 500TB) and the limited capabilities of traditional applications. In this demo, we present Shahed, an interactive system which provides an efficient way to index, query, and visualize satellite datasets available in NASA archive. Shahed is composed of four main modules. The uncertainty module resolves data uncertainty imposed by the satellites. The indexing module organizes the data in a novel multi-resolution spatio-temporal index designed for satellite data. The querying module uses the indexes to answer both spatiotemporal selection and aggregate queries provided by the user. The visualization module generates images, videos, and multi-level images which gives an insight of data distribution and dynamics over time. This demo gives users a hands-on experience with Shahed through a map-based web interface in which users can browse the available datasets using the map, issue spatiotemporal queries, and visualize the results as images or videos. | 2015 | SHAHED: A MapReduce-based system for querying and visualizing spatio-temporal satellite dataabstractRemote sensing data collected by satellites are now made publicly available by several space agencies. This data is very useful for scientists pursuing research in several applications including climate change, desertification, and land use change. The benefit of this data comes from its richness as it provides an archived history for over 15 years of satellite observations for natural phenomena such as temperature and vegetation. Unfortunately, the use of such data is very limited due to the huge size of archives (> 500TB) and the limited capabilities of traditional applications. This paper introduces SHAHED; a MapReduce-based system for querying, visualizing, and mining large scale satellite data. SHAHED considers both the spatial and temporal aspects of the data to provide efficient query processing at large scale. The core of SHAHED is composed of four main components. The uncertainty component recovers missing data in the input which comes from cloud coverage and satellite mis-alignment. The indexing component provides a novel multi-resolution quad-tree-based spatio-temporal index structure, which indexes satellite data efficiently with minimal space overhead. The querying component answers selection and aggregate queries in real-time using the constructed index. Finally, the visualization component uses MapReduce programs to generate heat map images and videos for user queries. A set of experiments running on a live system deployed on a cluster of machines show the efficiency of the proposed design. All the features supported by SHAHED are made accessible through an easy to use web interface that hides the complexity of the system and provides a nice user experience. Ahmed Eldawy, Mohamed F. | 2015 | ThemeDelta: Dynamic Segmentations over Temporal Topic ModelsabstractWe present ThemeDelta, a visual analytics system for extracting and visualizing temporal trends, clustering, and reorganization in time-indexed textual datasets. ThemeDelta is supported by a dynamic temporal segmentation algorithm that integrates with topic modeling algorithms to identify change points where significant shifts in topics occur. This algorithm detects not only the clustering and associations of keywords in a time period, but also their convergence into topics (groups of keywords) that may later diverge into new groups. The visual representation of ThemeDelta uses sinuous, variable-width lines to show this evolution on a timeline, utilizing color for categories, and line width for keyword strength. We demonstrate how interaction with ThemeDelta helps capture the rise and fall of topics by analyzing archives of historical newspapers, of U.S. presidential campaign speeches, and of social messages collected through iNeighbors, a web-based social website. ThemeDelta is evaluated using a qualitative expert user study involving three researchers from rhetoric and history using the historical newspapers corpus. | 2014 | Taghreed: a system for querying, analyzing, and visualizing geotagged microblogsabstractThis paper presents Taghreed; a full-fledged system for efficient and scalable querying, analyzing, and visualizing geotagged microblogs, e.g., tweets. Taghreed supports arbitrary queries on a large number (Billions) of microblogs that go up to several months in the past. Taghreed consists of four main components: (f) Indexer, (2) query engine, (3) recovery manager, and (4) visualizer. Taghreed indexer efficiently digests incoming microblogs with high arrival rates in light memory-resident indexes. When the memory becomes full, a flushing policy manager transfers the memory contents to disk indexes which are managing Billions of microblogs for several months. On memory failure, the recovery manager restores the system status from replicated copies for the main-memory content. Taghreed query engine consists of two modules: a query optimizer and a query processor. The query optimizer generates an optimal query plan to be executed by the query processor through efficient retrieval techniques to provide low query response, i.e., order of milli-seconds. Taghreed visualizer allows end users to issue a wide variety of spatio-temporal queries. Then, it graphically presents the answers and allows interactive exploration through them. Taghreed is the first system that addresses all these challenges collectively for microblogs data. In the paper, each system component is described in detail. | 2014 | VisCAT: spatio-temporal visualization and aggregation of categorical attributes in twitter dataabstractIn the last few years, Twitter data has become so popular that it is used in a rich set of new applications, e.g., real-time event detection, demographic analysis, and news extraction. As user-generated data, the plethora of Twitter data motivates several analysis tasks that make use of activeness of 271+ Million Twitter users. This demonstration presents VisCAT; a tool for aggregating and visualizing categorical attributes in Twitter data. VisCAT outputs visual reports that provide spatial analysis through interactive map-based visualization for categorical attributes---such as tweet language or source operating system---at different zoom levels. The visual reports are built based on user-selected data in arbitrary spatial and temporal ranges. For this data, VisCAT employs a hierarchical spatial data structure to materialize the count of each category at multiple spatial levels. We demonstrate VisCAT, using real Twitter dataset. The demonstration includes use cases on tweet language and tweet source attributes in the region of Gulf Arab states, which can be used for deducing thoughtful conclusions on demographics and living levels in local societies. | 2013 | Visual Analytics for Multimodal Social Network Analysis: A Design Study with Social ScientistsabstractSocial network analysis (SNA) is becoming increasingly concerned not only with actors and their relations, but also with distinguishing between different types of such entities. For example, social scientists may want to investigate asymmetric relations in organizations with strict chains of command, or incorporate non-actors such as conferences and projects when analyzing coauthorship patterns. Multimodal social networks are those where actors and relations belong to different types, or modes, and multimodal social network analysis (mSNA) is accordingly SNA for such networks. In this paper, we present a design study that we conducted with several social scientist collaborators on how to support mSNA using visual analytics tools. Based on an openended, formative design process, we devised a visual representation called parallel node-link bands (PNLBs) that splits modes into separate bands and renders connections between adjacent ones, similar to the list view in Jigsaw. We then used the tool in a qualitative evaluation involving five social scientists whose feedback informed a second design phase that incorporated additional network metrics. Finally, we conducted a second qualitative evaluation with our social scientist collaborators that provided further insights on the utility of the PNLBs representation and the potential of visual analytics for mSNA. | 2012 | GravNav: using a gravity model for multi-scale navigationabstractWe present gravity navigation (GravNav), a family of multi-scale navigation techniques that use a gravity-inspired model for assisting navigation in large visual 2D spaces based on the interest and salience of visual objects in the space. GravNav is an instance of topology-aware navigation, which makes use of the structure of the visual space to aid navigation. We have performed a controlled study comparing GravNav to standard zoom and pan navigation, with and without variable-rate zoom control. Our results show a significant improvement for GravNav over standard navigation, particularly when coupled with variable-rate zoom. We also report findings on user behavior in multi-scale navigation. | 2012 | Polyzoom: multiscale and multifocus exploration in 2d visual spacesabstractThe most common techniques for navigating in multiscale visual spaces are pan, zoom, and bird's eye views. However, these techniques are often tedious and cumbersome to use, especially when objects of interest are located far apart. We present the PolyZoom technique where users progressively build hierarchies of focus regions, stacked on each other such that each subsequent level shows a higher magnification. Correlation graphics show the relation between parent and child viewports in the hierarchy. To validate the new technique, we compare it to standard navigation techniques in two user studies, one on multiscale visual search and the other on multifocus interaction. Results show that PolyZoom performs better than current standard techniques. Waqas Javed, Sohaib Ghani, Niklas Elmqvist |

| 2012 | Perception of Animated Node-Link Diagrams for Dynamic GraphsabstractAbstract Effective visualization of dynamic graphs remains an open research topic, and many state‐of‐the‐art tools use animated node‐link diagrams for this purpose. Despite its intuitiveness, the effectiveness of animation in node‐link diagrams has been questioned, and several empirical studies have shown that animation is not necessarily superior to static visualizations. However, the exact mechanics of perceiving animated node‐link diagrams are still unclear. In this paper, we study the impact of different dynamic graph metrics on user perception of the animation. After deriving candidate visual graph metrics, we perform an exploratory user study where participants are asked to reconstruct the event sequence in animated node‐link diagrams. Based on these findings, we conduct a second user study where we investigate the most important visual metrics in depth. Our findings show that node speed and target separation are prominent visual metrics to predict the performance of event sequencing tasks. Sohaib Ghani, Niklas Elmqvist, Ji Soo Yi |

| 2012 | Evaluating the Role of Time in Investigative Analysis of Document CollectionsabstractTime is a universal and essential aspect of data in any investigative analysis. It helps analysts establish causality, build storylines from evidence, and reject infeasible hypotheses. For this reason, many investigative analysis tools provide visual representations designed for making sense of temporal data. However, the field of visual analytics still needs more evidence explaining how temporal visualization actually aids the analysis process, as well as design recommendations for how to build these visualizations. To fill this gap, we conducted an insight-based qualitative study to investigate the influence of temporal visualization on investigative analysis. We found that visualizing temporal information helped participants externalize chains of events. Another contribution of our work is the lightweight evaluation approach used to collect, visualize, and analyze insight. Bum Chul Kwon, Waqas Javed, Sohaib Ghani, Niklas Elmqvist, Ji Soo Yi, David S. | 2011 | Evaluating Physical/Virtual Occlusion Management Techniques for Horizontal DisplaysabstractWe evaluate unguided and guided visual search performance for a set of techniques that mitigate occlusion between physical and virtual objects on a tabletop display. The techniques are derived from a general model of hybrid physical/virtual occlusion, and take increasingly drastic measures to make the user aware of, identify, and access hidden objects—but with increasingly space-consuming and disruptive impact on the display. Performance is different depending on the visual display, suggesting a tradeoff between management strength and visual space deformation. These keywords were added by machine and not by the authors. This process is experimental and the keywords may be updated as the learning algorithm improves. Waqas Javed, KyungTae Kim, Sohaib Ghani, Niklas Elmqvist |

| 2011 | Dynamic Insets for Context-Aware Graph NavigationabstractAbstract Maintaining both overview and detail while navigating in graphs, such as road networks, airline route maps, or social networks, is difficult, especially when targets of interest are located far apart. We present a navigation technique called Dynamic Insets that provides context awareness for graph navigation. Dynamic insets utilize the topological structure of the network to draw a visual inset for off‐screen nodes that shows a portion of the surrounding area for links leaving the edge of the screen. We implement dynamic insets for general graph navigation as well as geographical maps. We also present results from a set of user studies that show that our technique is more efficient than most of the existing techniques for graph navigation in different networks.
