2026 ToC: Tree-of-Claims Search with Multi-Agent Language Models
abstract
Optimizing patent claims is a critical yet challenging task, demanding careful balance between maximizing novelty and preserving legal scope. Manual claim drafting is labor-intensive, costly, and inherently inconsistent, while conventional Large Language Models (LLMs) often lack the structured, iterative reasoning essential for precise claim refinement. To address these challenges, we introduce Tree of Claims (ToC), an innovative framework that redefines claim editing as a guided search problem. ToC synergistically integrates Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) with a collaborative multi-agent system, comprising an LLM-based EditorAgent that proposes contextually grounded edits, and an ExaminerAgent that mimics patent examiner critiques through structured, chain-of-thought analyses of novelty and prior art disclosure. Driven by a carefully designed multi-objective reward function, ToC jointly optimizes novelty, scope retention, and semantic coherence. Experimental evaluation on a benchmark of 1145 claims demonstrates that ToC significantly outperforms standard LLMs in zero-shot and few-shot scenarios, achieving an average composite score improvement of 8%, and up to 9% in certain cases. Extensive experiments, including detailed ablation studies, validate ToC’s efficacy in generating superior, legally robust claim revisions. Overall, ToC establishes a transparent, controllable, and interpretable methodology that effectively bridges advanced LLM reasoning capabilities with strategic MCTS planning for structured patent claim optimization.

2025 To See a World in a Spark of Neuron: Disentangling Multi-Task Interference for Training-Free Model Merging
abstract
Fine-tuning pre-trained models on targeted datasets enhances task-specific performance but often comes at the expense of generalization.Model merging techniques, which integrate multiple fine-tuned models into a single multi-task model through task arithmetic, offer a promising solution. However, task interference remains a fundamental challenge, leading to performance degradation and suboptimal merged models.Existing approaches largely overlooked the fundamental roles of neurons, their connectivity, and activation, resulting in a merging process and a merged model that does not consider how neurons relay and process information. In this work, we present the first study that relies on neuronal mechanisms for model merging.Specifically, we decomposed task-specific representations into two complementary neuronal subspaces that regulate input sensitivity and task adaptability.Leveraging this decomposition, we introduced NeuroMerging, a novel merging framework developed to mitigate task interference within neuronal subspaces, enabling training-free model fusion across diverse tasks.Through extensive experiments, we demonstrated that NeuroMerging achieved superior performance compared to existing methods on multi-task benchmarks across both natural language and vision domains. Our findings highlighted the importance of aligning neuronal mechanisms in model merging, offering new insights into mitigating task interference and improving knowledge fusion. Our project is available at https://ZzzitaoFang. github.io/projects/NeuroMerging/.

2025 NeurIPT: Foundation Model for Neural Interfaces
abstract
Electroencephalography (EEG) has wide-ranging applications, from clinical diagnosis to brain-computer interfaces (BCIs). With the increasing volume and variety of EEG data, there has been growing interest in establishing foundation models (FMs) to scale up and generalize neural decoding. Despite showing early potential, applying FMs to EEG remains challenging due to substantial inter-subject, inter-task, and inter-condition variability, as well as diverse electrode configurations across recording setups. To tackle these open challenges, we propose **NeurIPT**, a foundation model tailored for diverse EEG-based **Neur**al **I**nterfaces with a **P**re-trained **T**ransformer by capturing both homogeneous and heterogeneous spatio-temporal characteristics inherent in EEG signals. Temporally, we introduce Amplitude-Aware Masked Pretraining (AAMP), masking based on signal amplitude rather than random intervals, to learn robust representations across varying signal intensities beyond local interpolation. Moreover, this temporal representation is enhanced by a progressive Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) architecture, where specialized expert subnetworks are progressively introduced at deeper layers, adapting effectively to the diverse temporal characteristics of EEG signals. Spatially, NeurIPT leverages the 3D physical coordinates of electrodes, enabling effective transfer across varying EEG settings, and develops Intra-Inter Lobe Pooling (IILP) during fine-tuning to efficiently exploit regional brain features. Empirical evaluations across nine downstream BCI datasets, via fine-tuning and training from scratch, demonstrated NeurIPT consistently achieved state-of-the-art performance, highlighting its broad applicability and robust generalization. Our work pushes forward the state of FMs in EEG and offers insights into scalable and generalizable neural information processing systems.

2025 Global Model Selection for Semi-Supervised Support Vector Machine via Solution Paths
abstract
Semi-supervised support vector machine (S3VM) is important because it can use plentiful unlabeled data to improve the generalization accuracy of traditional SVMs. In order to achieve good performance, it is necessary for S3VM to take some effective measures to select hyperparameters. However, model selection for semi-supervised models is still a key open problem. Existing methods for semi-supervised models to search for the optimal parameter values are usually computationally demanding, especially those ones with grid search. To address this challenging problem, in this article, we first propose solution paths of S3VM (SPS3VM), which can track the solutions of the nonconvex S3VM with respect to the hyperparameters. Specifically, we apply incremental and decremental learning methods to update the solution and let it satisfy the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions. Based on the SPS3VM and the piecewise linearity of model function, we can find the model with the minimum cross-validation (CV) error for the entire range of candidate hyperparameters by computing the error path of S3VM. Our SPS3VM is the first solution path algorithm for nonconvex optimization problem of semi-supervised learning models. We also provide the finite convergence analysis and computational complexity of SPS3VM. Experimental results on a variety of benchmark datasets not only verify that our SPS3VM can globally search the hyperparameters (regularization and ramp loss parameters) but also show a huge reduction of computational time while retaining similar or slightly better generalization performance compared with the grid search approach.

2024 Safe and Robust Watermark Injection with a Single OoD Image
abstract
Training a high-performance deep neural network requires large amounts of data and computational resources. Protecting the intellectual property (IP) and commercial ownership of a deep model is challenging yet increasingly crucial. A major stream of watermarking strategies implants verifiable backdoor triggers by poisoning training samples, but these are often unrealistic due to data privacy and safety concerns and are vulnerable to minor model changes such as fine-tuning. To overcome these challenges, we propose a safe and robust backdoor-based watermark injection technique that leverages the diverse knowledge from a single out-of-distribution (OoD) image, which serves as a secret key for IP verification. The independence of training data makes it agnostic to third-party promises of IP security. We induce robustness via random perturbation of model parameters during watermark injection to defend against common watermark removal attacks, including fine-tuning, pruning, and model extraction. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed watermarking approach is not only time- and sample-efficient without training data, but also robust against the watermark removal attacks above.

2024 CADE: Cosine Annealing Differential Evolution for Spiking Neural Network
abstract
Spiking neural networks (SNNs) have gained prominence for their potential in neuromorphic computing and energy-efficient artificial intelligence, yet optimizing them remains a formidable challenge for gradient-based methods due to their discrete, spike-based computation. This paper attempts to tackle the challenges by introducing Cosine Annealing Differential Evolution (CADE), designed to modulate the mutation factor (F) and crossover rate (CR) of differential evolution (DE) for the SNN model, i.e., Spiking Element Wise (SEW) ResNet. Extensive empirical evaluations were conducted to analyze CADE. CADE showed a balance in exploring and exploiting the search space, resulting in accelerated convergence and improved accuracy compared to existing gradient-based and DE-based methods. Moreover, an initialization method based on a transfer learning setting was developed, pretraining on a source dataset (i.e., CIFAR-10) and fine-tuning the target dataset (i.e., CIFAR-100), to improve population diversity. It was found to further enhance CADE for SNN. Remarkably, CADE elevates the performance of the highest accuracy SEW model by an additional 0.52 percentage points, underscoring its effectiveness in fine-tuning and enhancing SNNs. These findings emphasize the pivotal role of a scheduler for F and CR adjustment, especially for DE-based SNN. Source Code on Github: https://github.com/Tank-Jiang/CADE4SNN.

2024 Parameter Competition Balancing for Model Merging
abstract
While fine-tuning pretrained models has become common practice, these models often underperform outside their specific domains. Recently developed model merging techniques enable the direct integration of multiple models, each fine-tuned for distinct tasks, into a single model. This strategy promotes multitasking capabilities without requiring retraining on the original datasets. However, existing methods fall short in addressing potential conflicts and complex correlations between tasks, especially in parameter-level adjustments, posing a challenge in effectively balancing parameter competition across various tasks. This paper introduces an innovative technique named **PCB-Merging** (Parameter Competition Balancing), a *lightweight* and *training-free* technique that adjusts the coefficients of each parameter for effective model merging. PCB-Merging employs intra-balancing to gauge parameter significance within individual tasks and inter-balancing to assess parameter similarities across different tasks. Parameters with low importance scores are dropped, and the remaining ones are rescaled to form the final merged model. We assessed our approach in diverse merging scenarios, including cross-task, cross-domain, and cross-training configurations, as well as out-of-domain generalization. The experimental results reveal that our approach achieves substantial performance enhancements across multiple modalities, domains, model sizes, number of tasks, fine-tuning forms, and large language models, outperforming existing model merging methods.

2023 Revisiting Data-Free Knowledge Distillation with Poisoned Teachers
abstract
Data-free knowledge distillation (KD) helps transfer knowledge from a pre-trained model (known as the teacher model) to a smaller model (known as the student model) without access to the original training data used for training the teacher model. However, the security of the synthetic or out-of-distribution (OOD) data required in data-free KD is largely unknown and under-explored. In this work, we make the first effort to uncover the security risk of data-free KD w.r.t. untrusted pre-trained models. We then propose Anti-Backdoor Data-Free KD (ABD), the first plug-in defensive method for data-free KD methods to mitigate the chance of potential backdoors being transferred. We empirically evaluate the effectiveness of our proposed ABD in diminishing transferred backdoor knowledge while maintaining compatible downstream performances as the vanilla KD. We envision this work as a milestone for alarming and mitigating the potential backdoors in data-free KD. Codes are released at https://github.com/illidanlab/ABD .

2022 Robust Unsupervised Domain Adaptation from A Corrupted Source
abstract
Unsupervised Domain Adaptation (UDA) provides a promising solution for learning without supervision, which transfers knowledge from relevant source domains with accessible labeled training data. Existing UDA solutions hinge on clean training data with a short-tail distribution from the source domain, which can be fragile when the source domain data is corrupted either inherently or via adversarial attacks. In this work, we propose an effective framework to address the challenges of UDA from corrupted source domains in a principled manner. Specifically, we perform knowledge ensemble from multiple domain-invariant models that are learned on random partitions of training data. To further address the distribution shift from the source to the target domain, we refine each of the learned models via mutual information maximization, which adaptively obtains the predictive information of the target domain with high confidence. Extensive empirical studies demonstrate that the proposed approach is robust against various types of poisoned data attacks while achieving high asymptotic performance on the target domain.

2021 Federated Adversarial Debiasing for Fair and Transferable Representations
abstract
Federated learning is a distributed learning framework that is communication efficient and provides protection over participating users' raw training data. One outstanding challenge of federate learning comes from the users' heterogeneity, and learning from such data may yield biased and unfair models for minority groups. While adversarial learning is commonly used in centralized learning for mitigating bias, there are significant barriers when extending it to the federated framework. In this work, we study these barriers and address them by proposing a novel approach Federated Adversarial DEbiasing (FADE). FADE does not require users' sensitive group information for debiasing and offers users the freedom to opt-out from the adversarial component when privacy or computational costs become a concern. We show that ideally, FADE can attain the same global optimality as the one by the centralized algorithm. We then analyze when its convergence may fail in practice and propose a simple yet effective method to address the problem. Finally, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed framework through extensive empirical studies, including the problem settings of unsupervised domain adaptation and fair learning. Our codes and pre-trained models are available at: https://github.com/illidanlab/FADE.

2019 Tackle Balancing Constraint for Incremental Semi-Supervised Support Vector Learning
abstract
Semi-Supervised Support Vector Machine (S3VM) is one of the most popular methods for semi-supervised learning. To avoid the trivial solution of classifying all the unlabeled examples to a same class, balancing constraint is often used with S3VM (denoted as BCS3VM). Recently, a novel incremental learning algorithm (IL-S3VM) based on the path following technique was proposed to significantly scale up S3VM. However, the dynamic relationship of balancing constraint with previous labeled and unlabeled samples impede their incremental method for handling BCS3VM. To fill this gap, in this paper, we propose a new incremental S3VM algorithm (IL-BCS3VM) based on IL-S3VM which can effectively handle the balancing constraint and directly update the solution of BCS3VM. Specifically, to handle the dynamic relationship of balancing constraint with previous labeled and unlabeled samples, we design two unique procedures which can respectively eliminate and add the balancing constraint into S3VM. More importantly, we provide the finite convergence analysis for our IL-BCS3VM algorithm. Experimental results on a variety of benchmark datasets not only confirm the finite convergence of IL-BCS3VM, but also show a huge reduction of computational time compared with existing batch and incremental learning algorithms, while retaining the similar generalization performance.

2011 Joint Spectrum Sensing in Distributed MIMO Systems
abstract
In this paper, we consider a case where two distributed MIMO systems share the same spectrum. Each of them has to dynamically detect the spectrum of the other. The system model is established and the joint spectrum sensing scheme is studied. The optimal weighting factors are derived. Closed-form expressions of the probability of false alarm and sensing are provided. Simulation results show that the proposed joint sensing scheme can achieve much better sensing performance than that of the single-sensor scheme.

2011 Optimal Soft Combination and Cooperative Sensing in Distributed Antenna Systems
abstract
Cooperative sensing based on energy detection in distributed antenna systems is considered in this letter. We investigate soft combination of the observed energies from different cognitive radio users. Based on the Neyman-Pearson criterion, an optimal soft combination scheme which can maximize the detection probability for the constant false alarm rate is obtained. Closed-form expressions for the detection probability and false alarm rate for the optimal soft combination scheme are derived. Finally, through numerical results the improvement in cooperative sensing schemes with the optimal soft combination is shown.

2009 Bandpass Sampling of One RF Signal Over Multiple RF Signals With Contiguous Spectrums
abstract
In this letter, we consider a case in which only one radio frequency (RF) signal is of interest over multiple RF signals with contiguous spectrums (i.e., these RF signals are adjacent to each other). The minimum valid bandpass sampling range for a desired RF signal over multiple ones is derived under the assumption of contiguous spectrums. The sampling frequency confined by the derived minimum valid sampling range is significantly reduced compared to the case in which all the RF signals are desired. The minimum valid bandpass sampling frequency can be further reduced when the desired RF signal has symmetric double sidebands.
