2019 Equalisation, despreading, and beamforming scenarios of complex spread-OFDM/OQAM in single-input multi-output channels
abstract
Orthogonal frequency division multiplexing/offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OFDM/OQAM) is a promising multicarrier system, which can achieve a better bandwidth efficiency than cyclic prefix (CP)‐OFDM. However, OFDM/OQAM suffers from an inherent interference. Since in OFDM/OQAM, the data symbols are real‐valued, the pure imaginary self‐interference can be eliminated by removing the imaginary part of the received signal. On the other hand, in the literature, it is shown that even for complex‐valued data symbols, the self‐interference can be eliminated if a spreading code is employed. The resulted scheme is called spread‐OFDM/OQAM. In this study, we extend spread‐OFDM/OQAM for single‐input multi‐output channels. In case of multiple antennas, at the receiver after demodulation, the following processes must be performed: equalisation (to remove the channel effect), despreading of spreaded symbols, and beamforming of multiple antennas. We propose three scenarios to apply the mentioned processes. In the first scenario, despreading, equalisation, and beamforming are performed jointly in one step. In the second scenario, despreading and equalisation are accomplished jointly and then beamforming is performed. In the last scenario, each of those processes is applied separately. We compare the complexity of the proposed approaches. Also their performance is evaluated through simulations in terms of bit error rate.

2018 Power Spectral Analysis of UW-OFDM Systems
abstract
Unique word- (UW-) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a new multicarrier technique that is shown to be superior to the cyclic prefix- (CP-) OFDM system in terms of bit-error-rate performance in fading channels. Furthermore, in the literature, it is shown by simulations that UW-OFDM has a considerably lower out-of-band (OOB) radiation compared with CP-OFDM. In this paper, we derive an analytical expression to investigate the spectral characteristics of UW-OFDM to be able to determine the effect of the different system parameters on the OOB radiation. In addition, we include in our analysis the effects of the interpolation filter and the unique word. We show that the OOB radiation in UW-OFDM is mainly determined by the number of non-modulated subcarriers reserved as the guard band, and the ratio of the UW sequence length to the number of subcarriers. By increasing either of these two parameters, we show that we can suppress the OOB radiation to any amount. This is an important advantage of UW-OFDM over classic CP-OFDM systems, and shows that UW-OFDM is an excellent candidate for cognitive radio systems.

2014 Novel spreading codes for multicarrier code division multiple access based cognitive radio networks with sidelobe suppression
abstract
ABSTRACT The deployment of multicarrier code division multiple access as the transmission scheme of the spectrum overlay based cognitive radio (CR) networks faces two challenging issues: (i) the need for spreading codes with arbitrary length and (ii) the interfering effect of the leaked power (due to spectral sidelobes) to the adjacent spectral band used by the primary system. To meet these challenges, we propose two novel complex spreading code sets. For this purpose, a cost function is defined as the ratio of the power leaked to the adjacent primary band to the power transmitted to the band allowed for CR operation. The cost function is shown to be convertible to a trace ratio problem. The two complex spreading code sets are determined by deploying two different standard solutions. The first is the conventional but approximate solution based on generalized eigenvalue decomposition (GEVD) method, and the other is an iterative algorithm that converges to the optimal solution and hence outperforms the GEVD based solution. Simulation results show that by a slight decrease in number of users, the code set yielded by iterative algorithm suppresses the leaked power to almost zero. The applicability of the proposed code sets in different scenarios is discussed. Copyright © 2012 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

2013 Power Spectrum Characterization of Systematic Coded UW-OFDM Systems
abstract
Unique word (UW)-OFDM is a newly proposed multicarrier technique that has shown to outperform cyclic prefix (CP)-OFDM in fading channels. Until now, the spectrum of UW-OFDM is not thoroughly investigated. In this paper, we derive an analytical expression for the spectrum taking into account the DFT based implementation of the system. Simulations show that the proposed analytical results are very accurate. Compared to CP-OFDM, we show that UW-OFDM has much lower out-of-band (OOB) radiation, which makes it suitable for systems with strict spectral masks, as e.g. cognitive radios. Further, in this paper, we evaluate the effect of the redundant carrier placement on the spectrum.

2010 Receiver design for downlink MIMO MC-CDMA in cognitive radio systems
abstract
Multiuser interference (MUI) and co-space interference (CSI) are two challenging issues in design of multicarrier code-division multiple-access (MC-CDMA) systems when multiple antennas are used at both the transmitter and receiver sides (MIMO transmission). On the other hand, in cognitive radio (CR) system, the secondary users that use MC-MCDA technique must deactivate the subcarriers used by the primary users. This leads to loss of orthogonality of the conventional spreading codes such as Hadamard Walsh codes. In this paper, we have modified two recently proposed linear receivers to be deployed in MIMO MC-CDMA based CR downlink transmission where some of the subcarriers are turned off. To solve the resultant non-orthogonality problem, the complex carrier interferometry (CI) codes are utilized that exist for any length. The first method, called total interference cancellation (CI-TIC), is able to completely eliminate the CSI and the MUI. The other method is called CI symbol-chip level minimum mean square error (CI-SC-MMSE) that shows superior bit error performance with respect to CI-TIC. For different scenarios, simulation results show that the proposed CI based receivers are able to effectively mitigate the MUI and the CSI in comparison with the case where Hadamard Walsh codes are utilized.

2009 SVD-Based Receiver for Downlink MIMO MC-CDMA Systems
abstract
In this paper, a new receiver for downlink multicarrier code-division multiple-access (MC-CDMA) system is proposed when the channel between the transmitter and each user is multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO). The structure of the proposed receiver is based on the singular value decomposition (SVD) method. The conventional SVD method is able to eliminate the co-space interference (CSI) in single user scenario, however, due to multi-channel environment, it is not able to eliminate the co-space interferences caused by the transmitted signals to the other users that is called multiuser interference (MUI). By combining the SVD and space frequency spreading code, a receiver called total interference cancellation (TIC) is developed that completely eliminates both the CSI and the MUI. The performance of the TIC suffers from small singular values of the subchannel matrices. To improve the performance, a symbol-chip level MMSE receiver is developed in which joint equalization and beamforming is utilized at chip level when the MMSE criterion is employed at symbol level (after despreading). The performance of the proposed receiver is evaluated and compared under different scenarios by computer simulations. The results show that there is no error floor in the bit error rate (BER) performances of the SVD based receiver under both criteria in the multiuser environment. Compared with the TIC criterion, the receiver designed based on the symbol-chip level MMSE criterion significantly improves the BER performance.

2008 A Polynomial Matrix SVD Approach for Time Domain Broadband Beamforming in MIMO-OFDM Systems
abstract
Singular value decomposition (SVD) is a useful technique to mitigate co-space interference (CSI) in multiple input multiple output (MIMO) systems employing orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) scheme. The SVD based frequency-domain broadband beamforming (FBBF) approach uses the beamforming matrices in both transmitter and receiver sides for each subchannel matrix. However, when the MIMO- OFDM system has a large number of subchannels, the FBBF technique is very complex due to computing the SVD of each subchannel separately. In this paper, we propose a new approach to eliminate CSI and intersymbol interference (ISI) in time- domain and frequency-domain, respectively. By the use of polynomial matrix SVD based on SBR2 algorithm, the MIMO- OFDM system is decomposed to the parallel decoupled single input single output (SISO) OFDM systems. In this way, the CSI is eliminated by time-domain broadband beamforming (TBBF) in both transmitter and receiver sides and ISI is mitigated in each SISO-OFDM system by frequency-domain equalization. The performance of the proposed method is evaluated by computer simulations for fixed broadband wireless communication system developed based on the WiMax. Simulation results show that the proposed method achieves good performance in concerned SNR interval.
