2025 Ego4o: Egocentric Human Motion Capture and Understanding from Multi-Modal Input
abstract
This work focuses on tracking and understanding human motion using consumer wearable devices, such as VR/AR headsets, smart glasses, cellphones, and smartwatches. These devices provide diverse, multi-modal sensor inputs, including egocentric images, and 1-3 sparse IMU sensors in varied combinations. Motion descriptions can also accompany these signals. The diverse input modalities and their intermittent availability pose challenges for consistent motion capture and understanding. In this work, we present Ego4o (o for omni), a new framework for simultaneous human motion capture and understanding from multi-modal egocentric inputs. This method maintains performance with partial inputs while achieving better results when multiple modalities are combined. First, the IMU sensor inputs, the optional egocentric image, and text description of human motion are encoded into the latent space of a motion VQ-VAE. Next, the latent vectors are sent to the VQ-VAE decoder and optimized to track human motion. When motion descriptions are unavailable, the latent vectors can be input into a multi-modal LLM to generate human motion descriptions, which can further enhance motion capture accuracy. Quantitative and qualitative evaluations demonstrate the effectiveness of our method in predicting accurate human motion and high-quality motion descriptions. 2024 Egocentric Whole-Body Motion Capture with FisheyeViT and Diffusion-Based Motion Refinement
abstract
In this work, we explore egocentric whole-body motion capture using a single fisheye camera, which simultane-ously estimates human body and hand motion. This task presents significant challenges due to three factors: the lack of high-quality datasets, fisheye camera distortion, and hu-man body self-occlusion. To address these challenges, we propose a novel approach that leverages Fisheye ViT to ex-tract fisheye image features, which are subsequently con-verted into pixel-aligned 3D heatmap representations for 3D human body pose prediction. For hand tracking, we incorporate dedicated hand detection and hand pose esti-mation networks for regressing 3D hand poses. Finally, we develop a diffusion-based whole-body motion prior model to refine the estimated whole-body motion while accounting for joint uncertainties. To train these networks, we col-lect a large synthetic dataset, Ego WholeBody, comprising 840,000 high-quality egocentric images captured across a diverse range of whole-body motion sequences. Quantitative and qualitative evaluations demonstrate the effective-ness of our method in producing high-quality whole-body motion estimates from a single egocentric camera.

2023 Drivable Avatar Clothing: Faithful Full-Body Telepresence with Dynamic Clothing Driven by Sparse RGB-D Input
abstract
Clothing is an important part of human appearance but challenging to model in photorealistic avatars. In this work we present avatars with dynamically moving loose clothing that can be faithfully driven by sparse RGB-D inputs as well as body and face motion. We propose a Neural Iterative Closest Point (N-ICP) algorithm that can efficiently track the coarse garment shape given sparse depth input. Given the coarse tracking results, the input RGB-D images are then remapped to texel-aligned features, which are fed into the drivable avatar models to faithfully reconstruct appearance details. We evaluate our method against recent image-driven synthesis baselines, and conduct a comprehensive analysis of the N-ICP algorithm. We demonstrate that our method can generalize to a novel testing environment, while preserving the ability to produce high-fidelity and faithful clothing dynamics and appearance.

2021 Reconstructing Hand-Object Interactions in the Wild
abstract
We study the problem of understanding hand-object interactions from 2D images in the wild. This requires reconstructing both the hand and the object in 3D, which is challenging because of the mutual occlusion between the hand and the object. In this paper we make two main contributions: (1) a novel reconstruction technique, RHO (Reconstructing Hands and Objects), which reconstructs 3D models of both the hand and the object leveraging the 2D image cues and 3D contact priors; (2) a dataset MOW (Manipulating Objects in the Wild) of 500 examples of hand-object interaction images that have been "3Dfied" with the help of the RHO technique. Overall our dataset contains 121 distinct object categories, with a much greater diversity of manipulation actions, than in previous datasets.

2021 OpenPose: Realtime Multi-Person 2D Pose Estimation Using Part Affinity Fields
abstract
Realtime multi-person 2D pose estimation is a key component in enabling machines to have an understanding of people in images and videos. In this work, we present a realtime approach to detect the 2D pose of multiple people in an image. The proposed method uses a nonparametric representation, which we refer to as Part Affinity Fields (PAFs), to learn to associate body parts with individuals in the image. This bottom-up system achieves high accuracy and realtime performance, regardless of the number of people in the image. In previous work, PAFs and body part location estimation were refined simultaneously across training stages. We demonstrate that a PAF-only refinement rather than both PAF and body part location refinement results in a substantial increase in both runtime performance and accuracy. We also present the first combined body and foot keypoint detector, based on an internal annotated foot dataset that we have publicly released. We show that the combined detector not only reduces the inference time compared to running them sequentially, but also maintains the accuracy of each component individually. This work has culminated in the release of OpenPose, the first open-source realtime system for multi-person 2D pose detection, including body, foot, hand, and facial keypoints.

2019 Learning Independent Object Motion From Unlabelled Stereoscopic Videos
abstract
We present a system for learning motion maps of independently moving objects from stereo videos. The only annotations used in our system are 2D object bounding boxes which introduce the notion of objects in our system. Unlike prior learning based approaches which have focused on predicting dense optical flow fields and/or depth maps for images, we propose to predict instance specific 3D scene flow maps and instance masks from which we derive a factored 3D motion map for each object instance. Our network takes the 3D geometry of the problem into account which allows it to correlate the input images and distinguish moving objects from static ones. We present experiments evaluating the accuracy of our 3D flow vectors, as well as depth maps and projected 2D optical flow where our jointly learned system outperforms earlier approaches trained for each task independently.

2017 Realtime Multi-person 2D Pose Estimation Using Part Affinity Fields
abstract
We present an approach to efficiently detect the 2D pose of multiple people in an image. The approach uses a nonparametric representation, which we refer to as Part Affinity Fields (PAFs), to learn to associate body parts with individuals in the image. The architecture encodes global context, allowing a greedy bottom-up parsing step that maintains high accuracy while achieving realtime performance, irrespective of the number of people in the image. The architecture is designed to jointly learn part locations and their association via two branches of the same sequential prediction process. Our method placed first in the inaugural COCO 2016 keypoints challenge, and significantly exceeds the previous state-of-the-art result on the MPII Multi-Person benchmark, both in performance and efficiency.

2016 Real-time scalable 6DOF pose estimation for textureless objects
abstract
Real-time recognition of the 6DOF pose of textureless objects is a fundamental and challenging problem in robotics. We present a novel approach to perform real-time estimation of the viewpoint, scale, and translation of an object in RGB and RGB-D image captures. In this work, we use a 3D model to render example poses of a textureless object, and find the nearest match to the input image using a GPU implementation. To achieve invariance to illumination and appearance across an object, we transform images to the Laplacian of Gaussian space. To perform real-time matching, we introduce a novel reshaping of the template set and the image, and we restructure the traditional normalized cross-correlation operation to leverage the GPU for fast matrix-matrix multiplication. We provide further speed up of large-scale template matching by contributing a dimensionality reduction approach using principal component analysis, and a candidate elimination method. Our method achieves state-of-the-art performance as shown by qualitative results and quantitative comparisons to pre-existing methods.
