2015 Deterministic Random Walk: A New Preconditioner for Power Grid Analysis
abstract
Iterative linear equation solvers rely on high-quality preconditioners to achieve fast convergence. For sparse symmetric systems arising from large power grid analysis problems, however, preconditioners generated by traditional incomplete Cholesky factorization are usually of low quality, resulting in slow convergence. On the other hand, preconditioners generated by random walks are quite effective to reduce the number of iterations, though requiring considerable amount of time to compute in a stochastic manner. We propose in this paper a new preconditioning technique for power grid analysis, named deterministic random walk that combines the advantages of the above two approaches. Our proposed algorithm computes the preconditioners in a deterministic manner to reduce computation time, while achieving similar quality as stochastic random walk preconditioning by modifying fill-ins to compensate dropped entries. We have proved that for such compensation scheme, our algorithm will always succeed, which otherwise cannot be guaranteed by traditional incomplete factorizations. We demonstrate that by incorporating our proposed preconditioner, a conjugate gradient solver is able to outperform a state-of-the-art algebraic multigrid preconditioned solver for dc analysis, and is very efficient for transient simulation on public IBM power grid benchmarks.

2013 Constraint abstraction for vectorless power grid verification
abstract
Vectorless power grid verification is a formal approach to analyze power supply noises across the chip without detailed current waveforms. It is typically formulated and solved as linear programs, which demand intensive computational power, especially for large-scale power grids. In this paper, we propose a constraint abstraction technique to reduce the computation cost of vectorless verification. The boundary condition of a subgrid is modeled by boundary constraints, which enable efficient calculation of conservative bounds of power supply noises in a divide-and-conquer manner. Experimental results show that the proposed approach achieves significant speedup over prior art while maintaining good solution quality.

2013 Scalable power grid transient analysis via MOR-assisted time-domain simulations
abstract
Time domain power grid simulations provide accurate estimations of power supply noises for design verifications. Despite extensive researches, it remains a very challenging problem to perform the simulations efficiently - the large power grid sizes demand tremendous computational resources and the causality between consecutive time steps hinders parallel implementations. Frequency domain and model order reduction (MOR) techniques promise scalability, though the solution accuracy may become a concern without trading off running time. In this paper, we present a framework for power grid transient analysis where time domain simulations are assisted by MOR techniques for scalability without losing much of the solution accuracy. Utilizing a direct sparse matrix solver and the multinode moment matching technique, we are able to achieve more than 5X speed-up using 16 processor cores distributed over two servers when simulating 1000 time steps for all the six IBM power grid simulation benchmarks, in comparison to the time domain simulations using only the direct solver.

2013 Verifying RLC Power Grids With Transient Current Constraints
abstract
Vectorless power grid verification is a powerful method that evaluates worst-case voltage noises without detailed current waveforms using optimization techniques. It is extremely challenging when considering RLC power grids because inductors are difficult to tackle and multiple time steps should be evaluated after the discretization of the system equation. In this paper, we study integrated RLC power grids with both VDD and GND networks, and introduce transient constraints to restrict the waveform of each current source for sign-off verification. We rigorously prove that the vectorless verification can be decomposed into two subproblems-the well-studied power grid transient analysis problem and a linear programming (LP) problem that optimizes an affine function of currents under current constraints-and propose to verify the power grid by transient simulation and noise optimization. A variable reduction algorithm is further proposed to generate reduced-size LP problems with a user-specified error tolerance, so that the conservative bounds of voltage noises can be computed efficiently. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm achieves significant speedup (e.g., up to more than 100× with 5 mV error) over the standard LP solver in solving the LP problems, and the proposed transient constraints make the noise estimations more realistic.

2012 Parallel forward and back substitution for efficient power grid simulation
abstract
Parallelizing power grid simulation with factorization-based direct or preconditioned iterative methods is a challenging task due to the data dependency among forward and back substitution. In this paper, we propose two approaches to parallelize forward and back substitution. The first approach exploits the parallelism by computing independent variables in parallel; the second approach resolves the data dependency by leveraging a node ordering produced by nested dissection. According to the requirements of TAU 2012 power grid simulation contest, a parallel power grid transient simulator is developed and tested with IBM power grid benchmarks. Results show that the second approach with the nested-dissection-based node ordering is more efficient.

2012 Hierarchical task mapping of cell-based AMR cosmology simulations
abstract
Cosmology simulations are highly communication-intensive, thus it is critical to exploit topology-aware task mapping techniques for performance optimization. To exploit the architectural properties of multiprocessor clusters (the performance gap between inter-node and intra-node communication as well as the gap between inter-socket and intra-socket communication), we design and develop a hierarchical task mapping scheme for cell-based AMR (Adaptive Mesh Refinement) cosmology simulations, in particular, the ART application. Our scheme consists of two parts: (1) an inter-node mapping to map application processes onto nodes with the objective of minimizing network traffic among nodes and (2) an intra-node mapping within each node to minimize the maximum size of messages transmitted between CPU sockets. Experiments on production supercomputers with 3D torus and fat-tree topologies show that our scheme can significantly reduce application communication cost by up to 50%. More importantly, our scheme is generic and can be extended to many other applications.

2011 Vectorless verification of RLC power grids with transient current constraints

It is extremely challenging when considering RLC power grids since inductors are difficult to tackle and multiple time steps should be evaluated after the discretization of the system equation. We further introduce transient constraints to restrict the waveform of each current source for realistic scenarios and design the RLCVN algorithm to solve the vectorless verification problem of RLC power grids. Results confirm that our algorithm is an effective approach for practical RLC power grid verification, and the proposed transient constraints make the noise estimations more realistic.

2011 Dual Algorithms for Vectorless Power Grid Verification Under Linear Current Constraints
abstract
Vectorless power grid verification makes it possible to evaluate worst-case voltage noises without enumerating possible current waveforms. Under linear current constraints, the vectorless power grid verification problem can be formulated and solved as a linear programming (LP) problem. However, previous approaches suffer from long runtime due to the large problem size. In this paper, we design two dual algorithms that efficiently evaluate voltage noises in a resistor/capacitor power grid. Our algorithms combine novel dual approaches to solve the LP problem, and a preconditioned conjugate gradient power grid analyzer. The first algorithm exploits the structure of the problem to simplify its dual problem into a convex problem, which is then solved by the cutting-plane method. The second algorithm formulates a reduced-size LP problem for each node to compute upper bound of voltage noise. Experimental results show that both algorithms are highly efficient.

2010 An efficient dual algorithm for vectorless power grid verification under linear current constraints
abstract
Vectorless power grid verification makes it possible to evaluate worst-case voltage drops without enumerating possible current waveforms. Under linear current constraints, the vectorless power grid verification problem can be formulated and solved as a linear programming (LP) problem. However, previous approaches suffer from long runtime due to the large problem size. In this paper, we design the DualVD algorithm that efficiently computes the worst-case voltage drops in an RC power grid. Our algorithm combines a novel dual approach to solve the LP problem, and a preconditioned conjugate gradient power grid analyzer. Our dual approach exploits the structure of the problem to simplify its dual problem into a convex problem, which is then solved by the cutting-plane method. Experimental results show that our algorithm is extremely efficient -- it takes less than an hour to complete the verification of a power grid with more than 50K nodes and it takes less than 1 second to verify one node in a power grid with more than 500K nodes.

2010 A hierarchical matrix inversion algorithm for vectorless power grid verification
abstract
Vectorless power grid verification is a powerful technique to validate the robustness of the on-chip power distribution network for all possible current waveforms. Formulated and solved as linear programming problems, vectorless power grid verification demands intensive computational power due to the large number of nodes in modern power grids. Previous work showed that the performance bottleneck of this powerful technique is within the sub-problem of power grid analysis, which essentially computes the inverse of the sparse but large power grid matrix. In this paper, we propose a hierarchical matrix inversion algorithm to compute the rows of the inverse efficiently by exploiting the structure of the power grid. The proposed algorithm is integrated with a previous dual algorithm addressing an orthogonal sub-problem for vectorless power grid verification. Results show that the proposed hierarchical algorithm accelerates the matrix inversion significantly, and thus makes the overall vectorless power grid verification efficient.
