2012 Interactive performance monitoring of a composite OLTP and OLAP workload
abstract
Online transaction processing (OLTP) and online analytical processing (OLAP) are thought of as two separate domains, despite sharing the same business data to operate on. This is the result of performance impairments encountered in the past when running on the same system, the workloads becoming ever more sophisticated, leading to contradictory optimization in database design. Recent developments in hardware and database systems are bringing forth research prototypes supporting mixed OLTP and OLAP workloads, challenging this separation. At the same time new benchmarks are proposed to assess these mixed workload systems. In the demonstration, we show an interactive performance monitor and benchmark driver developed for the Composite Benchmark for Transaction Processing and Reporting. The performance monitor allows us to directly determine the impact of changing shares within the workload and to interactively assess behavioral characteristics of different database systems under changing mixed workload conditions.

2011 Benchmarking database design for mixed OLTP and OLAP workloads
abstract
Current database benchmarks are either focusing on online transaction processing (OLTP) or on online analytical pro- cessing (OLAP) systems. This traditional separation has to be reevaluated to reflect current trends in the design of database systems. We see a need for a realistic benchmark workload taking both aspects into account. Therefore, we defined a mixed workload and illustrate ways to apply our workload to evaluate the influence of database design on system performance.

2009 Preserving Cohesive Structures for Tool-Based Modularity Reengineering
abstract
The quality of software systems heavily depends on their structure, which affects maintainability and readability. However, the ability of humans to cope with the complexity of large software systems is limited. To support reengineering large software systems, software clustering techniques that maximize module cohesion and minimize inter-modular coupling have been developed. The main drawback of these approaches is that they might pull apart elements that were thoughtfully placed together. This paper describes how strongly connected component analysis, dominance analysis, and intra-modular similarity clustering can be applied to identify and to preserve cohesive structures in order to improve the result of reengineering. The use of the proposed method allows a significant reduction of the number of component movements. As a result, the probability of false component movements is reduced. The proposed approach is illustrated by statistics and examples from 18 open source Java projects.

2006 Semantic Enterprise Services Platform: Motivation, Potential, Functionality and Application Scenarios
abstract
Service oriented software architectures will form the core of operational enterprise IT landscapes in the future. This contribution starts with an introduction of the state of the art in service oriented architectures. A concrete case study identifies central requirements that are not satisfied by these architectures so far. The authors argue that semantically rich descriptions of services are essential to tap the full potential of service oriented architectures in enterprise environments. This regards matchmaking and binding of services, integration of new services as well as the cost-efficient development of added value services by composing semantically described basic services. This paper introduces a semantic service platform that implements dynamic matchmaking, composition and binding of semantically described services. Finally its functionality and possible application scenarios are outlined
