2018 Urban TanDEM-X Raw DEM Fusion Based ON TV-L1 and Huber Models
abstract
Recently, the TanDEM-X DEM has been produced as a global DEM with unprecedented relative accuracy. One important step of the chain of global DEM generation is to mosaic multiple raw DEM tiles by DEM fusion methods to reach the best possible target accuracy. Currently, Weighted Averaging (WA) is used as a fast and simple method for TanDEM-X raw DEM fusion in which the weights are computed from height error maps delivered from the Interferometric TanDEM-X Processor (ITP). In this paper, we investigate the efficiency of variational models such as TV-L1 and Huber model for the TanDEM-X raw DEM fusion task in comparison to WA. The results illustrate that using variational models can improve the quality of DEM fusion outputs especially for areas with high-frequency contents and more complex morphological features like urban areas. Using variational models could improve the DEM quality by up to about 1m.

2017 Fusion of TanDEM-X and Cartosat-1 DEMS using TV-norm regularization and ANN-predicted weights
abstract
This paper deals with TanDEM-X and Cartosat-1 DEM fusion over urban areas with support of weight maps predicted by an artificial neural network (ANN). Although the TanDEM-X DEM is a global elevation dataset of unprecedented accuracy (following HRTI-3 standard), its quality decreases over urban areas because of artifacts intrinsic to the SAR imaging geometry. DEM fusion techniques can be used to improve the TanDEM-X DEM in problematic areas. In this investigation, Cartosat-1 elevation data were fused with the TanDEM-X DEM by weighted averaging and total variation (TV)-based regularization, resorting to weight maps derived by a specifically trained ANN. The results show that the proposed fusion strategy can significantly improve the final DEM quality.

2014 Design of a D2D Overlay for Next Generation LTE
abstract
With the ever-growing popularity of smartphones, new services are emerging where the local and positioning aspects becomes more important. Additionally, new types of traffic, such as vehicle-to-vehicle communications are being developed. In order to address these new trends, release-12 of LTE has started to evaluate, and possibly standardize, solutions for device-to-device (D2D) communication. This provides the foundations for the deployment of a D2D overlay. However, this should be viewed as a first step, and future LTE releases should encompass more advanced D2D communication techniques and architectures. In this paper, after reviewing the standardization progress for LTE in release-12, several possible improvements are examined for future releases both D2D discovery and communication. It is shown that the future D2D architecture should exploit the network when possible in order to provide an improved user experience and satisfy the need for more local services.

2014 On the Capacity of the Half-Duplex Diamond Channel Under Fixed Scheduling
abstract
The diamond channel is a dual-hop communication system composed of a source, and a destination connected through two noninterfering relays. Operating in the half-duplex mode, relays are not capable of simultaneous transmission and reception of signals. This paper studies coding and scheduling schemes achieving within constant gap from the maximum achievable rate possible assuming the scheduling is fixed for all messages and known to all nodes prior to transmission. It is shown that under constant power constraints, a simple transmission scheme for relays is within 0.71 bits of the optimum rate. It is also demonstrated that the proposed scheme can attain the optimum rate, when channels satisfy a certain property. Furthermore, it is proved that under average power constraints, the same scheme can be used to achieve within 3.6 bits of the optimum rate.

2013 Low-Latency Data Sharing in Erasure Multi-Way Relay Channels
abstract
We consider an erasure multi-way relay channel (EMWRC) in which several users share their data through a relay over erasure links. Assuming no feedback channel between the users and the relay, we first identify the challenges for designing a data sharing scheme over an EMWRC. Then, to overcome these challenges, we propose practical low-latency and low-complexity data sharing schemes based on fountain coding. Later, we introduce the notion of end-to-end erasure rate (EEER) and analytically derive it for the proposed schemes. EEER is then used to calculate the achievable rate and transmission overhead of the proposed schemes. Using EEER and computer simulations, the achievable rates and transmission overhead of our proposed schemes are compared with the ones of one-way relaying. This comparison implies that when the number of users and the channel erasure rates are not large, our proposed schemes outperform one-way relaying. We also find an upper bound on the achievable rates of EMWRC and observe that depending on the number of users and channel erasure rates, our proposed solutions can perform very close to this bound.

2012 Resource Allocation for Two-Way AF Relaying with Receive Channel Knowledge
abstract
The resource allocation problem for two sources communicating via an amplify-forward relay is studied from an outage perspective. Analog network coding is considered for half-duplex nodes with perfect receiver-side channel knowledge. Under a sum power constraint, an optimal power allocation that minimizes an approximate outage probability is derived and shown to improve the performance upto 4.77 dB. A cut-set bound is also optimized to serve as a comparison reference. When such a power allocation is not feasible, two novel resource- optimized schemes, which exploit conventional one-way relaying, are proposed to reduce the outage at low multiplexing gains1.

2011 Power allocation for two-way amplify-forward relaying with receive channel knowledge
abstract
The power allocation problem corresponding to the communication of two sources via a relay with amplify-forward capability is studied from the outage probability perspective. Analog network coding is considered for half-duplex nodes with perfect channel state information at the receiver side. Under a sum-power constraint on the transmit powers of the nodes, an optimal power allocation strategy that minimizes the high signal-to-noise ratio approximation of the outage probability is derived and shown to improve the performance significantly. As a reference for comparison, a cut-set type bound is also optimized for the setup.

2010 Zero-forcing for the symmetric Interference Channel with conferencing encoders
abstract
A two-user Gaussian Interference Channel (GIC) is considered in which encoders are connected through noiseless links with finite capacities. New genie-aided upper bounds on the sum-capacity are developed which incorporate the capacities of the cooperative links. When the GIC is symmetric, with possibly different cooperation link capacities, the sum-capacity is characterized within 2.13 bits gap for all values of the channel parameters. In the achievable scheme, each transmitter sends a private and a common message, and zero-forces the part of the other transmitter's private message, communicated over the conference between the encoders.

2010 On the capacity of the half-duplex diamond channel
abstract
In this paper, a dual-hop communication system composed of a source S and a destination D connected through two non-interfering half-duplex relays, R1and R2, is considered. In the literature of Information Theory, this configuration is known as the diamond channel. In this setup, four transmission modes are present, namely: 1) S transmits, and R1and R2listen (broadcast mode), 2) S transmits, R1listens, and simultaneously, R2transmits and D listens. 3) S transmits, R2listens, and simultaneously, R1transmits and D listens. 4) R1, R2transmit, and D listens (multiple-access mode). Assuming a constant power constraint for all transmitters, a parameter Δ is defined, which captures some important features of the channel. It is proven that for Δ=0 the capacity of the channel can be attained by successive relaying, i.e, using modes 2 and 3 defined above in a successive manner. This strategy may have an infinite gap from the capacity of the channel when Δ≠0. To achieve rates as close as 0.71 bits to the capacity, it is shown that the cases of Δ >0 and Δ0, respectively. Furthermore, it is established that under average power constraints the aforementioned strategies achieve rates as close as 3.6 bits to the capacity of the channel.

2009 An efficient adaptive distributed space-time coding scheme for cooperative relaying
abstract
A non-regenerative dual-hop wireless system based on distributed Alamouti space-time coding is considered. It is assumed that each relay retransmits an appropriately scaled space-time coded version of its received signal. The main goal of this paper is to find a scaling function for each relay to minimize the outage probability. In the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regime for the relay-destination link, it is shown that a threshold-based scaling function (i.e., the relay remains silent if its channel gain with the source is less than its predetermined threshold) is optimum from the outage probability point of view. Numerical results demonstrate a dramatic performance improvement as compared to the case that the relay stations forward their received signals with full power even for finite SNR scenarios.
