2019 Performance-Aware Model for Sparse Matrix-Matrix Multiplication on the Sunway TaihuLight Supercomputer
abstract
General sparse matrix-sparse matrix multiplication (SpGEMM) is one of the fundamental linear operations in a wide variety of scientific applications. To implement efficient SpGEMM for many large-scale applications, this paper proposes scalable and optimized SpGEMM kernels based on COO, CSR, ELL, and CSC formats on the Sunway TaihuLight supercomputer. First, a multi-level parallelism design for SpGEMM is proposed to exploit the parallelism of over 10 millions cores and better control memory based on the special Sunway architecture. Optimization strategies, such as load balance, coalesced DMA transmission, data reuse, vectorized computation, and parallel pipeline processing, are applied to further optimize performance of SpGEMM kernels. Second, we thoroughly analyze the performance of the proposed kernels. Third, a performance-aware model for SpGEMM is proposed to select the most appropriate compressed storage formats for the sparse matrices that can achieve the optimal performance of SpGEMM on the Sunway. The experimental results show the SpGEMM kernels have good scalability and meet the challenge of the high-speed computing of large-scale data sets on the Sunway. In addition, the performance-aware model for SpGEMM achieves an absolute value of relative error rate of 8.31 percent on average when the kernels are executed in one single process and achieves 8.59 percent on average when the kernels are executed in multiple processes. It is proved that the proposed performance-aware model can perform at high accuracy and satisfies the precision of selecting the best formats for SpGEMM on the Sunway TaihuLight supercomputer.

2018 Exploring high-performance processor architecture beyond the exascale
abstract
The ever-increasing need for high performance in scientific computation and engineering applications will push high-performance computing beyond the exascale. As an integral part of a supercomputing system, highperformance processors and their architecture designs are crucial in improving system performance. In this paper, three architecture design goals for high-performance processors beyond the exascale are introduced, including effective performance scaling, efficient resource utilization, and adaptation to diverse applications. Then a high-performance many-core processor architecture with scalar processing and application-specific acceleration (Massa) is proposed, which aims to achieve the above three goals by employing the techniques of distributed computational resources and application-customized hardware. Finally, some future research directions regarding the Massa architecture are discussed.

2015 Exploiting Transmission Lines on Heterogeneous Networks-on-Chip to Improve the Adaptivity and Efficiency of Cache Coherence
abstract
Emerging heterogeneous interconnects have shown lower latency and higher throughput, which can improve the efficiency of communication and create new opportunities for memory system designs. In this paper, transmission lines are employed as a latency-optimized network and combined with a packet-switched network to create heterogeneous interconnects improving the efficiencies of on-chip communication and cache coherence. We take advantage of this heterogeneous interconnect design, and keep cache coherence adaptively based on data locality. Different type of messages are adaptively directed through selected medium of the heterogeneous interconnects to enhance cache coherence effectiveness. Compared with a state-of-the-art coherence mechanism, the proposed technique can reduce the coherence overhead by 24%, reduce the network energy consumption by 35%, and improve the system performance by 25% on a 64-core system.

2012 Parallelizing sparse LU decomposition on FPGAs
abstract
Sparse LU decomposition is the core computation in the direct method that solves sparse systems of linear equations. Only little work has been conducted on parallelizing it on FPGAs. In this paper, we study parallelization strategies for sparse LU decomposition on FPGAs. We first analyze how to parallelize the right-looking algorithm and find that this algorithm is not suitable for FPGAs. Then the left-looking algorithm is analyzed and considered as better candidate than the right-looking version. Our design derived from the left-looking algorithm is based on a simple yet efficient parallel computational model for FPGAs. Our design mainly consists of multiple parallel processing elements (PEs). A total of 14 PEs can be integrated into a Xilinx Virtex-5 XC5VLX330. Unlike related work, where their designs are applied to sparse matrices from particular application domains, our hardware design can be applied to any symmetric positive definite or diagonally dominant matrices.

2009 A Parallel SystemC Environment: ArchSC
abstract
In domains of VLSI and the rising SoC, the system design exceedingly depends on the simulation and modeling. Conventional HDLs have some weakness including the extravagant precision and the slow speed. On the other hand, the system-level modeling, such as SystemC, has been widely used on all kinds of projects and achieved favorable results. When the target system scales excessively up, the simulation speed also drops to the most extern. So, it is very important to speed up by parallelizing the system-level modeling over HPC such as cluster. This paper introduces a novel parallel SystemC environment named ArchSC which is constructed on a large-scale system-level parallel simulation platform, ArchSim. The test results demonstrate that ArchSC has some advantages of high scalability, good generality and preferable acceleration performance.

2006 Application of Grid Technology in Multi-Objective Aircraft Optimization System
abstract
In order to resolve the composite material multi-objective topology optimization in aircraft design, a multi-objective aircraft optimization system based on grid technology, the multi-objective optimization grid (MOOG) is put forward. Using grid middleware, MOOG pooled the distributed computational resource into a high-performance computing platform and built a common genetic algorithm computational model towards multi-objective topology optimization. This system provided uniform resource service and visible user using interface. This thesis discussed in detail the system design and the improved multi-objective genetic algorithm. Finally, the solid experimental results of optimizing one type of high aspect ratio wing show that the MOOG has reduced the computation time and has good parallel acceleration
