| 2026 | WISE: A Multimodal Search Engine for Visual Scenes, Audio, Objects, Faces, Speech, and MetadataabstractIn this paper, we present WISE, an open-source audiovisual search engine which integrates a range of multimodal retrieval capabilities into a single practical tool, accessible to users without machine learning expertise. WISE supports natural-language and reverse-image queries at both the scene level (e.g. empty street) and object level (e.g. horse) across images and videos; face-based search for specific individuals; audio retrieval of acoustic events using text (e.g. wood creak) or an audio file; search over automatically transcribed speech; and filtering by user-provided metadata. Rich insights can be obtained by combining queries across modalities -- for example, retrieving German trains from a historical archive by applying the object query ''train'' and the metadata query ''Germany'', or searching for a face in a place. By employing vector search techniques, WISE can scale to support efficient retrieval over millions of images or thousands of hours of video. Its modular architecture facilitates the integration of new audio or visual models. WISE can be deployed locally for private or sensitive collections, and has been applied to a number of disparate real-world use cases. | 2021 | SeeHear: Signer Diarisation and a New DatasetabstractIn this work, we propose a framework to collect a large-scale, diverse sign language dataset that can be used to train automatic sign language recognition models. The first contribution of this work is SDTrack, a generic method for signer tracking and diarisation in the wild. Our second contribution is SeeHear, a dataset of 90 hours of British Sign Language (BSL) content featuring more than 1000 signers, and including interviews, monologues and debates. Using SDTrack, the SeeHear dataset is annotated with 35K active signing tracks, with corresponding signer identities and subtitles, and 40K automatically localised sign labels. As a third contribution, we provide benchmarks for signer diarisation and sign recognition on SeeHear. | 2019 | The VIA Annotation Software for Images, Audio and VideoabstractIn this paper, we introduce a simple and standalone manual annotation tool for images, audio and video: the VGG Image Annotator (VIA). This is a light weight, standalone and offline software package that does not require any installation or setup and runs solely in a web browser. The VIA software allows human annotators to define and describe spatial regions in images or video frames, and temporal segments in audio or video. These manual annotations can be exported to plain text data formats such as JSON and CSV and therefore are amenable to further processing by other software tools. VIA also supports collaborative annotation of a large dataset by a group of human annotators. The BSD open source license of this software allows it to be used in any academic project or commercial application. Abhishek Dutta 0003, Andrew Zisserman |

| 2014 | A Bayesian model for predicting face recognition performance using image qualityabstractQuality of a pair of facial images is a strong indicator of the uncertainty in decision about identity based on that image pair. In this paper, we describe a Bayesian approach to model the relation between image quality (like pose, illumination, noise, sharpness, etc) and corresponding face recognition performance. Experiment results based on the MultiPIE data set show that our model can accurately aggregate verification samples into groups for which the verification performance varies fairly consistently. Our model does not require similarity scores and can predict face recognition performance using only image quality information. Such a model has many applications. As an illustrative application, we show improved verification performance when the decision threshold automatically adapts according to the quality of facial images. Abhishek Dutta 0003, Raymond N. | 2010 | Minimal image sets for robust spherical gradient photometric stereoabstractState-of-the-art photometric shape and reflectance analysis uses polarized spherical gradient illumination images captured in a light stage. The quality of the estimated surface geometry degrades with interreflection, rotationally asymmetric reflectance lobes and light discretisation. We show that introducing additional parameters to model distortions in the diffuse reflectance lobe results in an underdetermined linear system. Results from existing approaches can be refined to satisfy this system using quadratic programming. We also describe how robust shape recovery can be achieved using a minimal four image set.
