2015 Atlas: Baidu's key-value storage system for cloud data
abstract
Users store rapidly increasing amount of data into the cloud. Cloud storage service is often characterized as having a large data set and few deletes. Hosting the service on a conventional system consisting of servers of powerful CPUs and managed by either a key-value (KV) system or a file system is not efficient. First, as demand on storage capacity grows much faster than that on CPU power, existing server configurations can lead to CPU under-utilization and inadequate storage. Second, as data durability is of paramount importance and storage capacity can be limited, a data protection scheme relying on data replication is not space efficient. Third, because of the unique distribution of data object size (mostly a few KBytes), hard disks may suffer from unnecessarily high request rate (when data is stored as KV pairs and need constant re-organization) or too many random writes (when data is stored as relatively small files). In Baidu this inefficiency has become an urgent issue as data is uploaded into the storage at an increasingly high rate and both the user population and the system are rapidly expanding. To address this issue, we adopt a customized compact server design based on the ARM processors and replace three-copy replication for data protection with erasure coding to enable low-power and high-density storage. Furthermore, there is a huge number of objects stored in the system, such as those for photos, MP3 music, and documents, but their sizes do not allow efficient operations in the conventional KV systems. To this end we propose an innovative architecture separating metadata and data managements to enable efficient data coding and storage. The resulting production system, called Atlas, is a highly scalable, reliable, and cost-effective KV store supporting Baidu's cloud storage service.

2014 SDF: software-defined flash for web-scale internet storage systems
abstract
In the last several years hundreds of thousands of SSDs have been deployed in the data centers of Baidu, China's largest Internet search company. Currently only 40\% or less of the raw bandwidth of the flash memory in the SSDs is delivered by the storage system to the applications. Moreover, because of space over-provisioning in the SSD to accommodate non-sequential or random writes, and additionally, parity coding across flash channels, typically only 50-70\% of the raw capacity of a commodity SSD can be used for user data. Given the large scale of Baidu's data center, making the most effective use of its SSDs is of great importance. Specifically, we seek to maximize both bandwidth and usable capacity.

2014 An efficient design and implementation of LSM-tree based key-value store on open-channel SSD
abstract
Various key-value (KV) stores are widely employed for data management to support Internet services as they offer higher efficiency, scalability, and availability than relational database systems. The log-structured merge tree (LSM-tree) based KV stores have attracted growing attention because they can eliminate random writes and maintain acceptable read performance. Recently, as the price per unit capacity of NAND flash decreases, solid state disks (SSDs) have been extensively adopted in enterprise-scale data centers to provide high I/O bandwidth and low access latency. However, it is inefficient to naively combine LSM-tree-based KV stores with SSDs, as the high parallelism enabled within the SSD cannot be fully exploited. Current LSM-tree-based KV stores are designed without assuming SSD's multi-channel architecture.

2014 Fast and Accurate Hashing Via Iterative Nearest Neighbors Expansion
abstract
Recently, the hashing techniques have been widely applied to approximate the nearest neighbor search problem in many real applications. The basic idea of these approaches is to generate binary codes for data points which can preserve the similarity between any two of them. Given a query, instead of performing a linear scan of the entire data base, the hashing method can perform a linear scan of the points whose hamming distance to the query is not greater than rh , where rh is a constant. However, in order to find the true nearest neighbors, both the locating time and the linear scan time are proportional to O(∑i=0(rh)(c || i)) ( c is the code length), which increase exponentially as rh increases. To address this limitation, we propose a novel algorithm named iterative expanding hashing in this paper, which builds an auxiliary index based on an offline constructed nearest neighbor table to avoid large rh . This auxiliary index can be easily combined with all the traditional hashing methods. Extensive experimental results over various real large-scale datasets demonstrate the superiority of the proposed approach.

2013 Complementary Projection Hashing
abstract
Recently, hashing techniques have been widely applied to solve the approximate nearest neighbors search problem in many vision applications. Generally, these hashing approaches generate 2^c buckets, where c is the length of the hash code. A good hashing method should satisfy the following two requirements: 1) mapping the nearby data points into the same bucket or nearby (measured by the Hamming distance) buckets. 2) all the data points are evenly distributed among all the buckets. In this paper, we propose a novel algorithm named Complementary Projection Hashing (CPH) to find the optimal hashing functions which explicitly considers the above two requirements. Specifically, CPH aims at sequentially finding a series of hyper planes (hashing functions) which cross the sparse region of the data. At the same time, the data points are evenly distributed in the hyper cubes generated by these hyper planes. The experiments comparing with the state-of-the-art hashing methods demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

2013 Active SSD design for energy-efficiency improvement of web-scale data analysis
abstract
NAND flash based solid state drives (SSDs) have been widely adopted as storage devices in modern data centers to provide high performance I/O services. Recently, researchers proposed several schemes to improve energy efficiency of the system by off-loading specific computation tasks from generic processors to local processing elements in SSD controllers. However, it is inefficient to directly apply these approaches to the web-scale data analysis system equipped with modern SSDs using FPGA based controllers. More important, the design schemess proposed in prior work cannot work with our target system. In order to overcome the limitation, we present our Active SSD design, considering unique features of computation tasks in web-scale data analysis. In addition, we address an important issue about interference between normal data processing and local computation in Active SSDs. The detailed architecture of our Active SSD is described, and a prototype is implemented. Moreover, the modification to the whole system is also introduced to enable the Active SSD. Experimental results based on real applications show that the energy efficiency can be significantly improved with our design.

2005 Simulating Large-Scale P2P Systems with the WiDS Toolkit
abstract
Current simulation technologies support at most hundreds of thousands of nodes, and fall short on the emerging large-scale networking systems that usually involve millions of nodes. We meet this challenge with our distributed simulation engine that is able to run millions of instances and is tested with a production P2P protocol, using commodity PC clusters. This simulation engine is part of the WiDS toolkit, which takes a holistic approach to the research and development of distributed systems. We also propose a critical optimization, called slow message relaxation (SMR), to trade simulation accuracy for performance. By taking advantage of the fact that distributed protocols are resilient to network fluctuation, SMR executes events in a logical time window much wider than the conventional look ahead scheme allows. We analyze and bound the potential effect of the distortion on application logic and other general metrics. Our experiments demonstrate that the simulation engine is able to achieve order of a magnitude speedup with statistically accurate simulation results.

2005 Sigma: A Fault-Tolerant Mutual Exclusion Algorithm in Dynamic Distributed Systems Subject to Process Crashes and Memory Losses
abstract
This paper introduces the Sigma algorithm that solves fault-tolerant mutual exclusion problem in dynamic systems where the set of processes may be large and change dynamically, processes may crash, and the recovery or replacement of crashed processes may lose all state information (memory losses). Sigma algorithm includes new messaging mechanisms to tolerate process crashes and memory losses. It does not require any extra cost for process recovery. The paper also shows that the threshold used by the Sigma algorithm is necessary for systems with process crashes and memory losses.
