2025 ViPE: Visual Perception in Parameter Space for Efficient Video-Language Understanding
abstract
Existing video-language models (Video-LLMs) typically rely on concatenating visual tokens with textual inputs for joint modeling. However, this token-level alignment leads to significant inefficiency, especially when scaling to long videos with dense visual inputs. In this work, we propose a video-to-parameter efficiency paradigm named ViPE that eliminates redundant visual tokens by transforming video content into visual perceptual weights, which are directly injected into the LLM's parameters.ViPE consists of a visual injection module that compresses video features into a small set of perceptual queries using a hierarchical merge strategy, and a visual perception module that integrates the resulting representations into the LLM through a lightweight LoRA-like mechanism.ViPE achieves performance comparable to token-based baselines such as LLaVA, while reducing FLOPs by 85% and inference time by up to 65%, demonstrating a highly efficient and scalable solution for video understanding.

2025 Breaking the Encoder Barrier for Seamless Video-Language Understanding
abstract
Most Video-Large Language Models (Video-LLMs) adopt an encoder-decoder framework, where a vision encoder extracts frame-wise features for processing by a language model. However, this approach incurs high computational costs, introduces resolution biases, and struggles to capture fine-grained multimodal interactions. To overcome these limitations, we propose ELVA, an encoder-free Video-LLM that directly models nuanced video-language interactions without relying on a vision encoder. ELVA employs token merging to construct a bottom-up hierarchical representation and incorporates a video guidance supervisor for direct spatiotemporal representation learning. Additionally, a hybrid-resolution mechanism strategically integrates high- and low-resolution frames as inputs to achieve an optimal balance between performance and efficiency. With only 7M publicly available video-text pairs, ELVA achieves performance on par with encoder-based Video-LLMs while reducing FLOPs by up to 95\% and inference latency by 92\%, offering a scalable and efficient solution for real-time video understanding.

2024 PresCount: Effective Register Allocation for Bank Conflict Reduction
abstract
Modern processors with large multi-banked register files often rely on hardware solutions to resolve bank conflicts efficiently. However, these hardware-based methods, while flexible, can incur runtime penalties and restrict the exploration of optimized hardware designs. In contrast, compiler-based methods for register bank assignments avoid runtime overhead. However, incorporating bank assignment into the complex register allocation process presents significant challenges, leading existing methods to adopt conservative approaches to avoid potential side effects. This paper introduces the novel register allocation method PresCount, which enhances the coloring strategy for the Register Conflict Graph (RCG) and incorporates a bank pressure tracking mechanism to improve performance. The integrated register bank assigner in PresCount effectively reduces bank conflicts, achieving remarkable reductions of 43.28% and 27.76%, respectively, compared to existing methods on platforms with rich register banks and limited register budgets, as demonstrated by SPECfp and CNN-KERNEL benchmarks. Furthermore, a subgroup splitting technique is introduced to facilitate register allocation under the bank-subgroup register file design, specifically our Domain-Specific Architecture (DSA) for AI computing. This technique demonstrates an impressive 99.85% reduction in bank conflicts for domain-specific kernel functions. By addressing the challenges of bank conflicts in register allocation, the proposed PresCount method showcases significant improvements in performance and efficiency for platforms with different register configurations and domain-specific workloads, allowing for more flexible exploration of optimized hardware designs.

2024 COSA: Concatenated Sample Pretrained Vision-Language Foundation Model
abstract
Due to the limited scale and quality of video-text training corpus, most vision-language foundation models employ image-text datasets for pretraining and primarily focus on modeling visually semantic representations while disregarding temporal semantic representations and correlations. To address this issue, we propose COSA, a COncatenated SAmple pretrained vision-language foundation model. COSA can jointly model visual contents and event-level temporal cues using only image-text corpora. We achieve this by sequentially concatenating multiple image-text pairs as inputs for pretraining. This transformation effectively converts existing image-text corpora into a pseudo video-paragraph corpus, enabling richer scene transformations and explicit event-description correspondence. Extensive experiments demonstrate that COSA consistently improves performance across a broad range of semantic vision-language downstream tasks, including paragraph-to-video retrieval, text-to-video/image retrieval, video/image captioning and video QA. Notably, COSA achieves state-of-the-art results on various competitive benchmarks. Code and model are released at https://github.com/TXH-mercury/COSA.

2023 Enhancing Vision-Language Pre-Training with Jointly Learned Questioner and Dense Captioner
abstract
Large pre-trained multimodal models have demonstrated significant success in a range of downstream tasks, including image captioning, image-text retrieval, visual question answering (VQA), etc. However, many of these methods rely on image-text pairs collected from the web as pre-training data and unfortunately overlook the need for fine-grained feature alignment between vision and language modalities, which requires detailed understanding of images and language expressions. While integrating VQA and dense captioning (DC) into pre-training can address this issue, acquiring image-question-answer as well as image-location-caption triplets is challenging and time-consuming. Additionally, publicly available datasets for VQA and dense captioning are typically limited in scale due to manual data collection and labeling efforts. In this paper, we propose a novel method called Joint QA and DC GEneration (JADE), which utilizes a pre-trained multimodal model and easily-crawled image-text pairs to automatically generate and filter large-scale VQA and dense captioning datasets. We apply this method to the Conceptual Caption (CC3M) dataset to generate a new dataset called CC3M-QA-DC. Experiments show that when used for pre-training in a multi-task manner, CC3M-QA-DC can improve the performance with various backbones on various downstream tasks. Furthermore, our generated CC3M-QA-DC can be combined with larger image-text datasets (e.g., CC15M) and achieve competitive results compared with models using much more data. Code and dataset are available at https://github.com/johncaged/OPT_Questioner.

2023 VAST: A Vision-Audio-Subtitle-Text Omni-Modality Foundation Model and Dataset
abstract
Vision and text have been fully explored in contemporary video-text foundational models, while other modalities such as audio and subtitles in videos have not received sufficient attention. In this paper, we resort to establish connections between multi-modality video tracks, including Vision, Audio, and Subtitle, and Text by exploring an automatically generated large-scale omni-modality video caption dataset called VAST-27M. Specifically, we first collect 27 million open-domain video clips and separately train a vision and an audio captioner to generate vision and audio captions. Then, we employ an off-the-shelf Large Language Model (LLM) to integrate the generated captions, together with subtitles and instructional prompts into omni-modality captions. Based on the proposed VAST-27M dataset, we train an omni-modality video-text foundational model named VAST, which can perceive and process vision, audio, and subtitle modalities from video, and better support various tasks including vision-text, audio-text, and multi-modal video-text tasks (retrieval, captioning and QA). Extensive experiments have been conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of our proposed VAST-27M corpus and VAST foundation model. VAST achieves 22 new state-of-the-art results on various cross-modality benchmarks.

2021 Adaptive live migration of virtual machines under limited network bandwidth
abstract
Live migration is a crucial feature in existing virtualization platforms. Since memory is dirtied rapidly during the execution of a virtual machine (VM), boosting memory migration speed becomes a significant factor in guaranteeing a high-level success ratio and efficiency. However, the statically-configured migration strategy cannot cope with various workloads running in VMs, resulting in frequently aborted migration processes and low success ratio. This paper proposed a one-for-all migration architecture called Adaptive Live Migration (AdaMig) to address these issues. This QEMU-based solution dynamically switches migration methods and tunes related parameters by monitoring the run-time statistics from the migration process and the physical host. Once AdaMig detects the tendency that migration cannot converge, it will switch to another migration method to synchronize remaining dirty pages. During the whole process, AdaMig also dynamically tunes migration parameters according to current resources available in the physical host and migration efficiency. Experimental results reflect that AdaMig improves the success ratio from 26.7% to 93.3% over various workloads, and migration time is reduced by up to 45.5% in comparison with the original solution in QEMU.

2002 User-dependent perfect-scheduling multiple access (UPMA) protocol in wireless multihop mobile ad hoc networks
abstract
Based on the idea of contention reservation and polling, a user-dependent perfect-scheduling multiple access (UPMA) protocol for supporting node mobility and multihop architecture is described. In the protocol, only the nodes have packets to send contend to use the channel and the nodes without traffic transmission are immediately deleted from the polling list, thus it improves channel utilization greatly. Moreover, a collision avoidance and resolution protocol is proposed to guarantee a node to access the channel rapidly. Finally, taking a wireless network with star topology as an example, the network performance of Internet data traffic is simulated and related conclusions are given.
