2011 Per Sub-Block Equalization of Very Long OFDM Blocks in Mobile Communications
abstract
In orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) communication systems mobility results in time-variations of the channel, which yield intercarrier interference (ICI), especially when large OFDM blocks are employed in order to achieve a high spectral efficiency. In this letter we focus on systems with very long OFDM blocks, where many of the existing ICI mitigation techniques can not be applied due to complexity constraints. To mitigate ICI we propose a pre-equalizer, operating on sub-blocks of the received OFDM block, whose aim is to force all sub-blocks to have almost the same equivalent channel. In other words, the pre-equalizer combats only time variations of the channel. Next, after OFDM demodulation, the classical equalizer compensates frequency selectivity of the target channel. Performance of the proposed scheme, together with a suitable channel estimate implemented on a per sub-block basis, is evaluated for a digital video broadcasting scenario, according to the DVB-T2 standard, where the OFDM block size may be 32k, and its possible extension to hand-held devices in a next-generation DVB-H.

2006 DVB-S2: The Second Generation Standard for Satellite Broad-Band Services
abstract
DVB-S2 is the second-generation specification for satellite broad-band applications, developed by the Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) Project in 2003. The system is structured as a toolkit to allow the implementation of the following satellite applications: TV and sound broadcasting, interactivity (i.e., Internet access), and professional services, such as TV contribution links and digital satellite news gathering. It has been specified around three concepts: best transmission performance approaching the Shannon limit, total flexibility, and reasonable receiver complexity. Channel coding and modulation are based on more recent developments by the scientific community: low density parity check codes are adopted, combined with QPSK, 8PSK, 16APSK, and 32APSK modulations for the system to work properly on the nonlinear satellite channel. The framing structure allows for maximum flexibility in a versatile system and also synchronization in worst case configurations (low signal-to-noise ratios). Adaptive coding and modulation, when used in one-to-one links, then allows optimization of the transmission parameters for each individual user, dependant on path conditions. Backward-compatible modes are also available, allowing existing DVB-S integrated receivers-decoders to continue working during the transitional period. The paper provides a tutorial overview of the DVB-S2 system, describing its main features and performance in various scenarios and applications.

1996 CD3-OFDM: a novel demodulation scheme for fixed and mobile receivers
abstract
This paper describes a novel channel estimation scheme identified as coded decision directed demodulation (CD3) for coherent demodulation of orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) signals making use of any constellation format [e.g., quaternary phase shift keying (QPSK), 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM), 64-QAM]. The structure of the CD3-OFDM demodulator is described, based on a new channel estimation loop exploiting the error correction capability of a forward error correction (FEC) decoder and frequency and time domain filtering to mitigate the effects of noise and residual errors. In contrast to the conventional coherent OFDM demodulation schemes, CD3-OFDM does not require the transmission of a comb of pilot tones for channel estimation and equalization, therefore yielding a significant improvement in spectrum efficiency (typically between 5-15%). The performance of the system with QPSK modulation is analyzed by computer simulations, on additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and frequency selective channels, under static and mobile reception conditions. For convolutional coding rate 1/2, the results indicate that CD3-OFDM allows one to achieve a very fast adaptation to the channel characteristics in a mobile environment (maximum tolerable Doppler shift of about 80 Hz for an OFDM symbol duration of 1 ms, as differential demodulation) and an E/sub b//N/sub 0/ performance similar to coherent demodulation (e.g., E/sub b//N/sub 0/=4.3 dB at bit-error rate (BER)=2/spl middot/10/sup -4/ on the AWGN channel). Therefore, CD3-OFDM can be suitable for digital sound and television broadcasting services over selective radio channels, addressed to fixed and vehicular receivers.
