A site oriented method for segmenting web pagesabstractInformation about how to segment a Web page can be used nowadays by applications such as segment aware Web search, classification and link analysis. In this research, we propose a fully automatic method for page segmentation and evaluate its application through experiments with four separate Web sites. While the method may be used in other applications, our main focus in this article is to use it as input to segment aware Web search systems. Our results indicate that the proposed method produces better segmentation results when compared to the best segmentation method we found in literature. Further, when applied as input to a segment aware Web search method, it produces results close to those produced when using a manual page segmentation method. | 2011 | A generic Web-based entity resolution frameworkabstractWeb data repositories usually contain references to thousands of real-world entities from multiple sources. It is not uncommon that multiple entities share the same label (polysemes) and that distinct label variations are associated with the same entity (synonyms), which frequently leads to ambiguous interpretations. Further, spelling variants, acronyms, abbreviated forms, and misspellings compound to worsen the problem. Solving this problem requires identifying which labels correspond to the same real-world entity, a process known as entity resolution. One approach to solve the entity resolution problem is to associate an authority identifier and a list of variant forms with each entity—a data structure known as an authority file. In this work, we propose a generic framework for implementing a method for generating authority files. Our method uses information from the Web to improve the quality of the authority file and, because of that, is referred to as WER—Web-based Entity Resolution. Our contribution here is threefold: (a) we discuss how to implement the WER framework, which is flexible and easy to adapt to new domains; (b) we run extended experimentation with our WER framework to show that it outperforms selected baselines; and (c) we compare the results of a specialized solution for author name resolution with those produced by the generic WER framework, and show that the WER results remain competitive. | 2010 | Using structural information to improve search in Web collectionsabstractAbstract In this work, we investigate the problem of using the block structure of Web pages to improve ranking results. Starting with basic intuitions provided by the concepts of term frequency (TF) and inverse document frequency (IDF), we propose nine block‐weight functions to distinguish the impact of term occurrences inside page blocks, instead of inside whole pages. These are then used to compute a modified BM25 ranking function. Using four distinct Web collections, we ran extensive experiments to compare our block‐weight ranking formulas with two other baselines: (a) a BM25 ranking applied to full pages, and (b) a BM25 ranking that takes into account best blocks. Our methods suggest that our block‐weighting ranking method is superior to all baselines across all collections we used and that average gain in precision figures from 5 to 20% are generated. | 2007 | Computing block importance for searching on web sitesabstractIn this paper we consider the problem of using the block structure of a Web page to improve ranking results when searching for information on Web sites. Given the block structure of the Web pages as input, we propose a method for computing the importance of each block (in the form of block weights) in a Web collection. As we show through experiments, the deployment of our method may allow a significant improvement in the quality of search results. We ran experiments to compare the quality of search results when using our method to the quality obtained when using no structure information. When compared to a ranking method that considered pages as monolithic units, our block-based ranking method led to improvements in the quality of search results in experiments with two sites with heterogeneous structures. Further, our method does not increase the cost of processing queries when compared to the systems using no structural information. David Fernandes de Oliveira, Edleno Silva de Moura, Berthier A. | 2007 | Efficient search ranking in social networksabstractIn social networks such as Orkut, www.orkut.com, a large portion of the user queries refer to names of other people. Indeed, more than 50% of the queries in Orkut are about names of other users, with an average of 1.8 terms per query. Further, the users usually search for people with whom they maintain relationships in the network. These relationships can be modelled as edges in a friendship graph, a graph in which the nodes represent the users. In this context, search ranking can be modelled as a function that depends on the distances among users in the graph, more specifically, of shortest paths in the friendship graph. However, application of this idea to ranking is not straightforward because the large size of modern social networks (dozens of millions of users) prevents efficient computation of shortest paths at query time. We overcome this by designing a ranking formula that strikes a balance between producing good results and reducing query processing time. Using data from the Orkut social network, which includes over 40 million users, we show that our ranking, augmented by this new signal, produces high quality results, while maintaining query processing time small. | 2006 | Learning to advertiseabstractContent-targeted advertising, the task of automatically associating ads to a Web page, constitutes a key Web monetization strategy nowadays. Further, it introduces new challenging technical problems and raises interesting questions. For instance, how to design ranking functions able to satisfy conflicting goals such as selecting advertisements (ads) that are relevant to the users and suitable and profitable to the publishers and advertisers? In this paper we propose a new framework for associating ads with web pages based on Genetic Programming (GP). Our GP method aims at learning functions that select the most appropriate ads, given the contents of a Web page. These ranking functions are designed to optimize overall precision and minimize the number of misplacements. By using a real ad collection and web pages from a newspaper, we obtained a gain over a state-of-the-art baseline method of 61.7% in average precision. Further, by evolving individuals to provide good ranking estimations, GP was able to discover ranking functions that are very effective in placing ads in web pages while avoiding irrelevant ones. | 2006 | Link-based similarity measures for the classification of Web documentsabstractAbstract Traditional text‐based document classifiers tend to perform poorly on the Web. Text in Web documents is usually noisy and often does not contain enough information to determine their topic. However, the Web provides a different source that can be useful to document classification: its hyperlink structure. In this work, the authors evaluate how the link structure of the Web can be used to determine a measure of similarity appropriate for document classification. They experiment with five different similarity measures and determine their adequacy for predicting the topic of a Web page. Tests performed on a Web directory show that link information alone allows classifying documents with an average precision of 86%. Further, when combined with a traditional text‐based classifier, precision increases to values of up to 90%, representing gains that range from 63 to 132% over the use of text‐based classification alone. Because the measures proposed in this article are straightforward to compute, they provide a practical and effective solution for Web classification and related information retrieval tasks. Further, the authors provide an important set of guidelines on how link structure can be used effectively to classify Web documents. | 2006 | Categorization-driven cross-language retrieval of medical informationabstractAbstract The Web has become a large repository of documents (or pages) written in many different languages. In this context, traditional information retrieval (IR) techniques cannot be used whenever the user query and the documents being retrieved are in different languages. To address this problem, new cross‐language information retrieval (CLIR) techniques have been proposed. In this work, we describe a method for cross‐language retrieval of medical information. This method combines query terms and related medical concepts obtained automatically through a categorization procedure. The medical concepts are used to create a linguistic abstraction that allows retrieval of information in a language‐independent way, minimizing linguistic problems such as polysemy. To evaluate our method, we carried out experiments using the OHSUMED test collection, whose documents are written in English, with queries expressed in Portuguese, Spanish, and French. The results indicate that our cross‐language retrieval method is as effective as a standard vector space model algorithm operating on queries and documents in the same language. Further, our results are better than previous results in the literature. Hermes R. Freitas-Junior, Berthier A. Ribeiro-Neto, Rodrigo de Freitas Vale, Alberto H. F. Laender, Luciano R. S. de Lima

Concept-based interactive query expansionabstractDespite the recent advances in search quality, the fast increase in the size of the Web collection has introduced new challenges for Web ranking algorithms. In fact, there are still many situations in which the users are presented with imprecise or very poor results. One of the key difficulties is the fact that users usually submit very short and ambiguous queries, and they do not fully specify their information needs. That is, it is necessary to improve the query formation process if better answers are to be provided. In this work we propose a novel concept-based query expansion technique, which allows disambiguating queries submitted to search engines. The concepts are extracted by analyzing and locating cycles in a special type of query relations graph. This is a directed graph built from query relations mined using association rules. The concepts related to the current query are then shown to the user who selects the one concept that he interprets is most related to his query. This concept is used to expand the original query and the expanded query is processed instead. Using a Web test collection, we show that our approach leads to gains in average precision figures of roughly 32%. Further, if the user also provides information on the type of relation between his query and the selected concept, the gains in average precision go up to roughly 52%. Bruno M. | 2005 | Maximal termsets as a query structuring mechanismabstractSearch engines process queries conjunctively to restrict the size of the answer set. Further, it is not rare to observe a mismatch between the vocabulary used in the text of Web pages and the terms used to compose the Web queries. The combination of these two features might lead to irrelevant query results, particularly in the case of more specific queries composed of three or more terms. To deal with this problem we propose a new technique for automatically structuring Web queries as a set of smaller subqueries. To select representative subqueries we use information on their distributions in the document collection. This can be adequately modeled using the concept of maximal termsets derived from the formalism of association rules theory. Experimentation shows that our technique leads to improved results. For the TREC-8 test collection, for instance, our technique led to gains in average precision of roughly 28% with regard to a BM25 ranking formula. Bruno Pôssas, Nivio Ziviani, Berthier A. | 2005 | Basic issues on the processing of web queriesabstractIn this paper we study three basic and key issues related to Web query processing: load balance, broker behavior, and performance by individual index servers. Our study, while preliminary, does reveal interesting tradeoffs: (1) load unbalance at low query arrival rates can be controlled with a simple measure of randomizing the distribution of documents among the index servers, (2) the broker is not a bottleneck, and (3) disk utilization is higher than CPU utilization. | 2005 | Impedance coupling in content-targeted advertisingabstractThe current boom of the Web is associated with the revenues originated from on-line advertising. While search-based advertising is dominant, the association of ads with a Web page (during user navigation) is becoming increasingly important. In this work, we study the problem of associating ads with a Web page, referred to as content-targeted advertising, from a computer science perspective. We assume that we have access to the text of the Web page, the keywords declared by an advertiser, and a text associated with the advertiser's business. Using no other information and operating in fully automatic fashion, we propose ten strategies for solving the problem and evaluate their effectiveness. Our methods indicate that a matching strategy that takes into account the semantics of the problem (referred to as AAK for "ads and keywords") can yield gains in average precision figures of 60% compared to a trivial vector-based strategy. Further, a more sophisticated impedance coupling strategy, which expands the text of the Web page to reduce vocabulary impedance with regard to an advertisement, can yield extra gains in average precision of 50%. These are first results. They suggest that great accuracy in content-targeted advertising can be attained with appropriate algorithms. Berthier A. | 2005 | Set-based vector model: An efficient approach for correlation-based rankingabstractThis work presents a new approach for ranking documents in the vector space model. The novelty lies in two fronts. First, patterns of term co-occurrence are taken into account and are processed efficiently. Second, term weights are generated using a data mining technique called association rules. This leads to a new ranking mechanism called the set-based vector model . The components of our model are no longer index terms but index termsets, where a termset is a set of index terms. Termsets capture the intuition that semantically related terms appear close to each other in a document. They can be efficiently obtained by limiting the computation to small passages of text. Once termsets have been computed, the ranking is calculated as a function of the termset frequency in the document and its scarcity in the document collection. Experimental results show that the set-based vector model improves average precision for all collections and query types evaluated, while keeping computational costs small. For the 2-gigabyte TREC-8 collection, the set-based vector model leads to a gain in average precision figures of 14.7% and 16.4% for disjunctive and conjunctive queries, respectively, with respect to the standard vector space model. These gains increase to 24.9% and 30.0%, respectively, when proximity information is taken into account. Query processing times are larger but, on average, still comparable to those obtained with the standard vector model (increases in processing time varied from 30% to 300%). Our results suggest that the set-based vector model provides a correlation-based ranking formula that is effective with general collections and computationally practical. | 2004 | Image Retrieval Using Multiple Evidence RankingabstractThe World Wide Web is the largest publicly available image repository and a natural source of attention. An immediate consequence is that searching for images on the Web has become a current and important task. To search for images of interest, the most direct approach is keyword-based searching. However, since images on the Web are poorly labeled, direct application of standard keyword-based image searching techniques frequently yields poor results. We propose a comprehensive solution to this problem. In our approach, multiple sources of evidence related to the images are considered. To allow combining these distinct sources of evidence, we introduce an image retrieval model based on Bayesian belief networks. To evaluate our approach, we perform experiments on a reference collection composed of 54000 Web images. Our results indicate that retrieval using an image surrounding text passages is as effective as standard retrieval based on HTML tags. This is an interesting result because current image search engines in the Web usually do not take text passages into consideration. Most important, according to our results, the combination of information derived from text passages with information derived from HTML tags leads to improved retrieval, with relative gains in average precision figures of roughly 50 percent, when compared to the results obtained by the use of each source of evidence in isolation. | 2003 | Combining link-based and content-based methods for web document classificationabstractThis paper studies how link information can be used to improve classification results for Web collections. We evaluate four different measures of subject similarity, derived from the Web link structure, and determine how accurate they are in predicting document categories. Using a Bayesian network model, we combine these measures with the results obtained by traditional content-based classifiers. Experiments on a Web directory show that best results are achieved when links from pages outside the directory are considered. Link information alone is able to obtain gains of up to 46 points in F1, when compared to a traditional content-based classifier. The combination with content-based methods can further improve the results, but too much noise may be introduced, since the text of Web pages is a much less reliable source of information. This work provides an important insight on which measures derived from links are more appropriate to compare Web documents and how these measures can be combined with content-based algorithms to improve the effectiveness of Web classification. | 2003 | Performance analysis and optimization of a distributed Video on Demand serviceabstractVideo on Demand (VoD) services are very appealing these days. In this work, we discuss four distinct alternatives for the architecture of a VoD server and compare their performances under different conditions. We later used the best configuration found in our analysis to evaluate, using simulations, the performance of a distributed VoD service in an ATM network covering an area the size of a large city neighborhood. We also introduced optimizations to the system, such as anticipated delivery and retrieval of video blocks from neighbor clients. Our results indicate that a server-driven operation mode (i.e., based on cycles) is not the most appropriate choice for a variety of workloads, even when the layout is striped (a result that challenges the conventional wisdom in the field). Also, our optimization strategies increased significantly the number of clients served in the system, which in our study case represented a savings of approximately 33% in the hardware required for the deployment of the service. | 2003 | An Information Retrieval Approach for Approximate QueriesabstractWith the growing availability of online information systems, a need for user interfaces that are flexible and easy to use has arisen. For such type of systems, an interface that allows the formulation of approximate queries can be of great utility since these allow the user to quickly explore the database contents even when he is unaware of the exact values of the database instances. Our work focuses on this problem, presenting a new model for ranking approximate answers and a new algorithm to compute the semantic similarity between attribute values, based on information retrieval techniques. To demonstrate the utility and usefulness of the approach, we perform a series of usability tests. The results suggest that our approach allows the retrieval of more relevant answers with less effort by the user. Pável Calado, Berthier A. Ribeiro-Neto

Local versus global link information in the WebabstractInformation derived from the cross-references among the documents in a hyperlinked environment, usually referred to as link information, is considered important since it can be used to effectively improve document retrieval. Depending on the retrieval strategy, link information can be local or global. Local link information is derived from the set of documents returned as answers to the current user query. Global link information is derived from all the documents in the collection. In this work, we investigate how the use of local link information compares to the use of global link information. For the comparison, we run a series of experiments using a large document collection extracted from the Web. For our reference collection, the results indicate that the use of local link information improves precision by 74%. When global link information is used, precision improves by 35%. However, when only the first 10 documents in the ranking are considered, the average gain in precision obtained with the use of global link information is higher than the gain obtained with the use of local link information. This is an interesting result since it provides insight and justification for the use of global link information in major Web search engines, where users are mostly interested in the first 10 answers. Furthermore, global information can be computed in the background, which allows speeding up query processing. Pável Calado, Berthier A. In this paper, we propose an architecture that allows the construction of digital libraries from the Web, using standard protocols and archival technologies, and incorporating powerful digital library and data extraction tools, thus benefiting from the breadth of the Web contents, but supporting services and organization available in digital libraries. The proposed architecture was applied to the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations, providing an important first step toward rapid construction of large DLs from the Web, as well as a large-scale solution for interoperability between independent digital libraries. | 2002 | Searching web databases by structuring keyword-based queriesabstractOn-line information services have become widespread in the Web nowadays. However, Web users are non-specialized and have a great variety of interests. Thus, interfaces for Web databases must be simple and uniform. In this paper we present an approach, based on Bayesian networks, for querying Web databases using keywords only. According to this approach, the user inputs a query through a simple search-box interface. From the input query, one or more plausible structured queries are derived and submitted to Web databases. The results are then retrieved and presented to the user as ranked answers. Our approach reduces the complexity of existing on-line interfaces and offers a solution to the problem of querying several distinct Web databases with a single interface. The applicability of the proposed approach was demonstrated by experimental results with 3 databases, obtained with a prototype search system that implements it. We have found that from 77% to 95% of the time, one of the top three resulting structured queries is the proper one. Further, when the user selects one of these three top queries for processing, the ranked answers present average precision figures from 60% to about 100%. | 2002 | Set-based model: a new approach for information retrievalabstractThe objective of this paper is to present a new technique for computing term weights for index terms, which leads to a new ranking mechanism, referred to as set-based model. The components in our model are no longer terms, but termsets. The novelty is that we compute term weights using a data mining technique called association rules, which is time efficient and yet yields nice improvements in retrieval effectiveness. The set-based model function for computing the similarity between a document and a query considers the termset frequency in the document and its scarcity in the document collection. Experimental results show that our model improves the average precision of the answer set for all three collections evaluated. For the TReC-3 collection, our set-based model led to a gain, relative to the standard vector space model, of 37% in average precision curves and of 57% in average precision for the top 10 documents. Like the vector space model, the set-based model has time complexity that is linear in the number of documents in the collection. Bruno Pôssas, Nivio Ziviani, Wagner Meira Jr., Berthier A. | 2001 | Bootstrapping for Example-Based Data ExtractionabstractThe effortless generation of wrappers for Web data sources is a crucial task if proper access to the huge amount of semi-structured data on the Web is to be granted. In particular, the development of strategies for wrapper generation based on user-given examples is currently one of the most promising research directions in Web data extraction. In this paper we show how to use a pre-existing data repository to automatically generate examples and allow full automated example-based data extraction. To demonstrate the feasibility of our approach we provide a number of results obtained from experiments we carried out and discuss how our ideas can be used to improve extraction rates and for providing resilience and adaptiveness for example-based generated wrappers. | 2001 | Distributed Query Processing Using Partitioned Inverted FilesabstractIn this paper, we study query processing in a distributed text database. The novelty is a real distributed architecture implementation that offers concurrent query service. The distributed system adopts a network of workstations model and the client-server paradigm. The document collection is indexed with an inverted file. We adopt two distinct strategies of index partitioning in the distributed system, namely local index partitioning and global index partitioning. In both strategies, documents are ranked using the vector space model along with a document filtering technique for fast ranking. We evaluate and compare the impact of the two index partitioning strategies on query processing performance. Experimental results on retrieval efficiency show that, within our framework, the global index partitioning outperforms the local index partitioning. 1. | 2001 | An experimental study in automatically categorizing medical documentsabstractIn this article, we evaluate the retrieval performance of an algorithm that automatically categorizes medical documents. The categorization, which consists in assigning an International Code of Disease (ICD) to the medical document under examination, is based on well-known information retrieval techniques. The algorithm, which we proposed, operates in a fully automatic mode and requires no supervision or training data. Using a database of 20,569 documents, we verify that the algorithm attains levels of average precision in the 70–80% range for category coding and in the 60–70% range for subcategory coding. We also carefully analyze the case of those documents whose categorization is not in accordance with the one provided by the human specialists. The vast majority of them represent cases that can only be fully categorized with the assistance of a human subject (because, for instance, they require specific knowledge of a given pathology). For a slim fraction of all documents (0.77% for category coding and 1.4% for subcategory coding), the algorithm makes assignments that are clearly incorrect. However, this fraction corresponds to only one-fourth of the mistakes made by the human specialists. Berthier A. Ribeiro-Neto, Alberto H. F. Laender, Luciano R. S. de Lima

Link-based and content-based evidential information in a belief network modelabstractThis work presents an information retrieval model developed to deal with hyperlinked environments. The model is based on belief networks and provides a framework for combining information extracted from the content of the documents with information derived from cross-references among the documents. The information extracted from the content of the documents is based on statistics regarding the keywords in the collection and is one of the basis for traditional information retrieval (IR) ranking algorithms. The information derived from cross-references among the documents is based on link references in a hyperlinked environment and has received increased attention lately due to the success of the Web. We discuss a set of strategies for combining these two types of sources of evidential information and experiment with them using a reference collection extracted from the Web. The results show that this type of combination can improve the retrieval performance without requiring any extra information from the users at query time. In our experiments, the improvements reach up to 59% in terms of average precision figures. Ilmério Reis da Silva, Berthier A. Ribeiro-Neto, Pável Calado, Edleno Silva de Moura, Nivio Ziviani

| 2000 | Comparing random data allocation and data striping in multimedia serversabstractWe compare performance of a multimedia storage server based on a random data allocation layout and block replication with traditional data striping techniques. Data striping techniques in multimedia servers are often designed for restricted workloads, e.g. sequential access patterns with CBR (constant bit rate) requirements. On the other hand, a system based on random data allocation can support virtually any type of multimedia application, including VBR (variable bit rate) video or audio, and interactive applications with unpredictable access patterns, such as 3D interactive virtual worlds, interactive scientific visualizations, etc. Surprisingly, our results show that system performance with random data allocation is competitive and sometimes even outperforms traditional data striping techniques, for the workloads for which data striping is designed to work best; i.e. streams with sequential access patterns and CBR requirements. Due to its superiority in supporting general workloads and competitive system performance, we believe that random data allocation will be the scheme of choice for next generation multimedia servers. | 1999 | Extracting Semi-Structured Data Through ExamplesabstractIn this paper, we describe an innovative approach to extracting semi-structured data from Web sources. The idea is to collect a couple of example objects from the user and to use this information to extract new objects from new pages or texts. To perform the extraction of new objects, we introduce a bottom-up extration strategy and, through experimentation, demonstrate that it works quite effectively with distinct Web sources, even if only a few examples are provided by the user. | 1999 | Formal verification and analysis of multimedia systemsabstractMultimedia systems such as video-on-demand (VOD) servers are time critical systems. These systems have strict response times, which implies that a delayed response can have serious consequence. For instance, in the case of a VOD server, an immediate consequence of a delayed response time can be user dissatisfaction, what can ultimately lead to the end of a business based on this system. Therefore, analysis and verification of timing properties of multimedia systems is an important problem. To verify if time critical systems satisfy their time bounds, we discuss the use of formal methods tools, in the verification and analysis of multimedia systems. We have used Verus (a formal verification tool) to model and analyze the ALMADEM-VOD server, a component of a true video-on-demand system. The modeling of this server in Verus has provided great insight into its design and its dynamic behavior. Using the quantitative estimates provided by Verus, we have determined performance bounds to the server. These bounds have pointed out that the performance curve of the actual server was almost at the predicted upper bound (worst case) level. These curves have uncovered design inefficiencies. After optimizing the server, its performance has improved over 40%, showing how useful formal verification can be used successfully during the design of multimedia systems. | 1999 | Efficient Distributed Algorithms to Build Inverted FilesabstractWe present three distributed algorithms to build global inverted files for very large text collections. The distributed environment we use is a high bandwidth network of workstations with a shared-nothing memory organization. The text collection is assumed to be evenly distributed among the disks of the various workstations. Our algorithms consider that the total distributed main memory is considerably smaller than the inverted file to be generated. The inverted file is compressed to save memory and disk space and to save time for moving data in/out disk and across the network. We analyze our algorithms and discuss the tradeoffs among them.We show that, with 8 processors and 16 megabytes of RAM available in each processor, the advanced variants of our algorithms are able to invert a 100 gigabytes collection (the size of the very large TREC-7 collection) in roughly 8 hours.Using 16 processors this time drops to roughly 4 hours. | 1992 | Object Allocation in Distributed Systems with Virtual ReplicationabstractThe authors investigate the problem of object allocation in a distributed environment with virtually replicated data. The traditional approach to improving data availability in a distributed system is to replicate data. A high degree of replication, however, imposes a serious burden to the system when updates are performed. Data inference can be used to reduce the degree of replication in the system while still providing high data availability. A model to allocate objects under such an environment is proposed. Rules based on application semantics are developed to reduce the search space for optimal allocation. Heuristic algorithms are proposed for allocation when the reduced search space is still prohibitively large. Examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.> Wesley W.
