SERIMI: Class-Based Matching for Instance Matching Across Heterogeneous DatasetsabstractState-of-the-art instance matching approaches do not perform well when used for matching instances across heterogeneous datasets. This shortcoming derives from their core operation depending on direct matching, which involves a direct comparison of instances in the source with instances in the target dataset. Direct matching is not suitable when the overlap between the datasets is small. Aiming at resolving this problem, we propose a new paradigm called class-based matching. Given a class of instances from the source dataset, called the class of interest, and a set of candidate matches retrieved from the target, class-based matching refines the candidates by filtering out those that do not belong to the class of interest. For this refinement, only data in the target is used, i.e., no direct comparison between source and target is involved. Based on extensive experiments using public benchmarks, we show our approach greatly improves the quality of state-of-the-art systems; especially on difficult matching tasks. | 2014 | Keyword Query RoutingabstractKeyword search is an intuitive paradigm for searching linked data sources on the web. We propose to route keywords only to relevant sources to reduce the high cost of processing keyword search queries over all sources. We propose a novel method for computing top-k routing plans based on their potentials to contain results for a given keyword query. We employ a keyword-element relationship summary that compactly represents relationships between keywords and the data elements mentioning them. A multilevel scoring mechanism is proposed for computing the relevance of routing plans based on scores at the level of keywords, data elements, element sets, and subgraphs that connect these elements. Experiments carried out using 150 publicly available sources on the web showed that valid plans (precision@1 of 0.92) that are highly relevant (mean reciprocal rank of 0.89) can be computed in 1 second on average on a single PC. Further, we show routing greatly helps to improve the performance of keyword search, without compromising its result quality. Thanh Tran 0001, Lei Zhang 0034

Selectivity estimation for hybrid queries over text-rich data graphsabstractMany databases today are text-rich, comprising not only structured, but also textual data. Querying such databases involves predicates matching structured data combined with string predicates featuring textual constraints. Based on selectivity estimates for these predicates, query processing as well as other tasks that can be solved through such queries can be optimized. Existing work on selectivity estimation focuses either on string or on structured query predicates alone. Further, probabilistic models proposed to incorporate dependencies between predicates are focused on the relational setting. In this work, we propose a template-based probabilistic model, which enables selectivity estimation for general graph-structured data. Our probabilistic model allows dependencies between structured data and its text-rich parts to be captured. With this general probabilistic solution, BN+, selectivity estimations can be obtained for queries over text-rich graph-structured data, which may contain structured and string predicates (hybrid queries). In our experiments on real-world data, we show that capturing dependencies between structured and textual data in this way greatly improves the accuracy of selectivity estimates without compromising the efficiency. | 2013 | TYPifier: Inferring the type semantics of structured dataabstractStructured data representing entity descriptions often lacks precise type information. That is, it is not known to which type an entity belongs to, or the type is too general to be useful. In this work, we propose to deal with this novel problem of inferring the type semantics of structured data, called typification. We formulate it as a clustering problem and discuss the features needed to obtain several solutions based on existing clustering solutions. Because schema features perform best, but are not abundantly available, we propose an approach to automatically derive them from data. Optimized for the use of schema features, we present TYPifier, a novel clustering algorithm that in experiments, yields better typification results than the baseline clustering solutions. | 2013 | TYPiMatch: type-specific unsupervised learning of keys and key values for heterogeneous web data integrationabstractInstance matching and blocking, a preprocessing step used for selecting candidate matches, require determining the most representative attributes of instances called keys, based on which similarities between instances are computed. We show that for the problem of learning blocking keys and key values, both generic techniques that do not exploit type information and supervised learning techniques optimized for one single predefined type of instances do not perform well on heterogeneous Web data capturing instances for which the predefined type is too general. That is, they actually belong to some subtypes that are not explicitly specified in the data. We propose an unsupervised approach for learning these subtypes and the subtype-specific blocking keys and key values. Compared to state-of-the-art supervised and unsupervised learning approaches that are optimized for one single type, our approach improves efficiency as well as result quality. In particular, we show that the proposed strategy of learning subtype-specific blocking keys and key values improves both blocking and instance matching results. Yongtao Ma, Thanh Tran 0001

Probabilistic Query Rewriting for Efficient and Effective Keyword Search on Graph DataabstractThe problem of rewriting keyword search queries on graph data has been studied recently, where the main goal is to clean user queries by rewriting keywords as valid tokens appearing in the data and grouping them into meaningful segments. The main solution to this problem employs heuristics for ranking query rewrites and a dynamic programming algorithm for computing them. Based on a broader set of queries defined by an existing benchmark, we show that the use of these heuristics does not yield good results. We propose a novel probabilistic framework, which enables the optimality of a query rewrite to be estimated in a more principled way. We show that our approach outperforms existing work in terms of effectiveness and efficiency of query rewriting. More importantly, we provide the first results indicating query rewriting can indeed improve overall keyword search runtime performance and result quality. | 2013 | Managing Structured and Semistructured RDF Data Using Structure IndexesabstractWe propose the use of a structure index for RDF. It can be used for querying RDF data for which the schema is incomplete or not available. More importantly, we leverage it for a structure-oriented approach to RDF data partitioning and query processing. Based on information captured by the structure index, similarly structured data elements are physically grouped and stored contiguously on disk. At querying time, the index is used for "structure-level" processing to identify the groups of data that match the query structure. Structure-level processing is then combined with standard "data-level" operations that involve retrieval and join procedures executed against the data. In the experiment, our solution provides several times faster performance than a state-of-the-art technique for data partitioning and query processing, and compares favorably with full-fledged RDF stores. | 2012 | CDMW 2012 - city data management workshop: workshop summaryabstractCities today have become highly dense, dynamic living areas for the majority of planet's population and also focal points of innovation, commerce, and growth in a highly modernized world. Due to its intensifying importance, cities need to transform into sustainable, smarter and credible places to enable a tenantable and comfortable life for their citizens. City data, which is the source of our digitized knowledge about the cities, is a highly important element to achive this goal as it is the main input to build complex city ecosystems and to solve particular problems that are encountered in the cities today. In this respect, this workshop will provide a major forum to identify the challenges and opportunities in terms of better managing city data and to reveal its discriminating importance in various applications in a city ecosystem. As city data becomes more widespread and prevailing, it poses novel research problems which importantly are open to the investigation of a broad community of researchers in various fields. | 2012 | Heterogeneous web data search using relevance-based on the fly data integrationabstractSearching over heterogeneous structured data on the Web is challenging due to vocabulary and structure mismatches among different data sources. In this paper, we study two existing strategies and present a new approach to integrate additional data sources into the search process. The first strategy relies on data integration to mediate mismatches through upfront computation of mappings, based on which queries are rewritten to fit individual sources. The other extreme is keyword search, which does not require any up-front investment, but ignores structure information. Building on these strategies, we present a hybrid approach, which combines the advantages of both. Our approach does not require any upfront data integration, but also leverages the fine grained structure of the underlying data. For a structured query adhering to the vocabulary of just one source, the so-called seed query, we construct an entity relevance model (ERM), which captures the content and the structure of the seed query results. This ERM is then aligned on the fly with keyword search results retrieved from other sources and also used to rank these results. The outcome of our experiments using large-scale real-world data sets suggests that data integration leads to higher search effectiveness compared to keyword search and that our new hybrid approach consistently exceeds both strategies. | 2011 | Ranking support for keyword search on structured data using relevance modelsabstractKeyword query processing over structured data has gained a lot of interest as keywords have proven to be an intuitive mean for accessing complex results in databases. While there is a large body of work that provides different mechanisms for computing keyword search results efficiently, a recent study has shown that the problem of ranking is much neglected. Existing strategies employ heuristics that perform only in ad-hoc experiments but fail to consistently and repeatedly deliver results across different information needs. We provide a principled approach for ranking that focuses on a well-established notion of what constitutes relevant keyword search results. In particular, we adopt relevance-based language models to consider the structure and semantics of keyword search results, and introduce novel strategies for smoothing probabilities in this structured data setting. Using a standardized evaluation framework, we show that our work largely and consistently outperforms all existing systems across datasets and various information needs. | 2011 | Index structures and top-k join algorithms for native keyword search databasesabstractFor supporting keyword search on structured data, current solutions require large indexes to be built that redundantly store subgraphs called neighborhoods. Further, for exploring keyword search results, large graphs have to be loaded into memory. We propose a solution, which employs much more compact index structures for neighborhood lookups. Using these indexes, we reduce keyword search result exploration to the traditional database problem of top-k join processing, enabling results to be computed efficiently. In particular, this computation can be performed on data streams successively loaded from disk (i.e., does not require the entire input to be loaded at once into memory). For supporting this, we propose a top-k procedure based on the rank join operator, which not only computes the k-best results, but also selects query plans in a top-k fashion during the process. In experiments using large real-world datasets, our solution reduced storage requirements and also outperformed the state-of-the-art in terms of performance and scalability. | 2011 | Repeatable and reliable search system evaluation using crowdsourcingabstractThe primary problem confronting any new kind of search task is how to boot-strap a reliable and repeatable evaluation campaign, and a crowd-sourcing approach provides many advantages. However, can these crowd-sourced evaluations be repeated over long periods of time in a reliable manner? To demonstrate, we investigate creating an evaluation campaign for the semantic search task of keyword-based ad-hoc object retrieval. In contrast to traditional search over web-pages, object search aims at the retrieval of information from factual assertions about real-world objects rather than searching over web-pages with textual descriptions. Using the first large-scale evaluation campaign that specifically targets the task of ad-hoc Web object retrieval over a number of deployed systems, we demonstrate that crowd-sourced evaluation campaigns can be repeated over time and still maintain reliable results. Furthermore, we show how these results are comparable to expert judges when ranking systems and that the results hold over different evaluation and relevance metrics. This work provides empirical support for scalable, reliable, and repeatable search system evaluation using crowdsourcing. Roi Blanco, Harry Halpin, Daniel M. | 2010 | ZoomRDF: semantic fisheye zooming on RDF dataabstractWith the development of Semantic Web in recent years, an increasing amount of semantic data has been created in form of Resource Description Framework (RDF). Current visualization techniques help users quickly understand the underlying RDF data by displaying its structure in an overview. However, detailed information can only be accessed by further navigation. An alternative approach is to display the global context as well as the local details simultaneously in a unified view. This view supports the visualization and navigation on RDF data in an integrated way. In this demonstration, we present ZoomRDF, a framework that: i) adapts a space-optimized visualization algorithm for RDF, which allows more resources to be displayed, thus maximizes the utilization of display space, ii) combines the visualization with a fisheye zooming concept, which assigns more space to some individual nodes while still preserving the overview structure of the data, iii) considers both the importance of resources and the user interaction on them, which offers more display space to those elements the user may be interested in. We implement the framework based on the Gene Ontology and demonstrate that it facilitates tasks like RDF data exploration and editing. Haofen Wang, Thanh Tran 0001, Yong Yu 0001

Top-k Exploration of Query Candidates for Efficient Keyword Search on Graph-Shaped (RDF) DataabstractKeyword queries enjoy widespread usage as they represent an intuitive way of specifying information needs. Recently, answering keyword queries on graph-structured data has emerged as an important research topic. The prevalent approaches build on dedicated indexing techniques as well as search algorithms aiming at finding substructures that connect the data elements matching the keywords. In this paper, we introduce a novel keyword search paradigm for graph-structured data, focusing in particular on the RDF data model. Instead of computing answers directly as in previous approaches, we first compute queries from the keywords, allowing the user to choose the appropriate query, and finally, process the query using the underlying database engine. Thereby, the full range of database optimization techniques can be leveraged for query processing. For the computation of queries, we propose a novel algorithm for the exploration of top-k matching subgraphs. While related techniques search the best answer trees, our algorithm is guaranteed to compute all k subgraphs with lowest costs, including cyclic graphs. By performing exploration only on a summary data structure derived from the data graph, we achieve promising performance improvements compared to other approaches. | 2009 | Hermes: a travel through semantics on the data webabstractThe Web as a global information space is developing from a Web of documents to a Web of data. This development opens new ways for addressing complex information needs. Search is no longer limited to matching keywords against documents, but instead complex information needs can be expressed in a structured way, with precise answers as results. In this paper, we demonstrate Hermes, an infrastructure for data web search. To provide an end-user oriented interface, we support expressive keyword search by translating user information needs into structured queries. We integrate heterogeneous web data sources with automatically computed mappings. Schema-level mappings are exploited in constructing structured queries against the integrated schema. These structured queries are decomposed into queries against the local web data sources, which are then processed in a distributed way. | 2008 | CE2: towards a large scale hybrid search engine with integrated ranking supportabstractThe Web contains a large amount of documents and increasingly, also semantic data in the form of RDF triples. Many of these triples are annotations that are associated with documents. While structured query is the principal mean to retrieve semantic data, keyword queries are typically used for document retrieval. Clearly, a form of hybrid search that seamlessly integrates these formalisms to query both documents and semantic data can address more complex information needs. In this paper, we present CE2, an integrated solution that leverages mature database and information retrieval technologies to tackle challenges in hybrid search on the large scale. For scalable storage, CE2 integrates database with inverted indices. Hybrid query processing is supported in CE2 through novel algorithms and data structures, which allow for advanced ranking schemes to be integrated more tightly into the process. Experiments conducted on Dbpedia and Wikipedia show that CE2 can provide good performance in terms of both effectiveness and efficiency. Haofen Wang, Thanh Tran 0001, Chang Liu 0021

| 2008 | Querying for meta knowledgeabstractThe Semantic Web is based on accessing and reusing RDF data from many different sources, which one may assign different levels of authority and credibility. Existing Semantic Web query languages, like SPARQL, have targeted the retrieval, combination and reuse of facts, but have so far ignored all aspects of meta knowledge, such as origins, authorship, recency or certainty of data, to name but a few. In this paper, we present an original, generic, formalized and implemented approach for managing many dimensions of meta knowledge, like source, authorship, certainty and others. The approach re-uses existing RDF modeling possibilities in order to represent meta knowledge. Then, it extends SPARQL query processing in such a way that given a SPARQL query for data, one may request meta knowledge without modifying the query proper. Thus, our approach achieves highly flexible and automatically coordinated querying for data and meta knowledge, while completely separating the two areas of concern. 1. | 2007 | The two cultures: mashing up web 2.0 and the semantic webabstractA common perception is that there are two competing visions for the future evolution of the Web: the Semantic Web and Web 2.0. A closer look, though, reveals that the core technologies and concerns of these two approaches are complementary and that each field can and must draw from the other's strengths. We believe that future web applications will retain the Web 2.0 focus on community and usability, while drawing on Semantic Web infrastructure to facilitate mashup-like information sharing. However, there are several open issues that must be addressed before such applications can become commonplace. In this paper, we outline a semantic weblogs scenario that illustrates the potential for combining Web 2.0 and Semantic Web technologies, while highlighting the unresolved issues that impede its realization. Nevertheless, we believe that the scenario can be realized in the short-term. We point to recent progress made in resolving each of the issues as well as future research directions for each of the communities.
